Visiting friends Rich and Sue in Sedona. One mile drive to their neighborhood entrance. Also hiked most of new Little Rock Trail. Usual great Sedona views.

Our get out of town hike didn't start out too well as we circled the north Bell Rock/Courthouse TH a couple times hoping for a parking spot. Fortunately, we were able to find a place to park at the south Bell Rock TH along with the rest of the horde. It was a little warm with not much breeze.

We took off and did the Loop clockwise; when I last did this loop in 2009 with my brother, niece and cousin we went counterclockwise. The closer we got to Bell Rock the more crowded it got pretty much until we hooked up with the Courthouse part of the hike. Like most Sedona hikes, this one has some great views which really started to kick in once you get to the northside of the loop as you can see Cathedral Rock, Doe and Bear Mountain area, Thunder Mountain, Airport Mesa, Brins Mesa area and Twin Buttes. And then there's the Baby Bell Rock you can do a quick loop around if you want.

You kind of have to pay attention as you hook up with Courthouse Butte Loop when you start heading ESE. The breeze picked up just a tad here as well as some cool clouds in the sky. As you round the corner you can see the Rabbit Ears which are always fun to photograph. My niece and brother created this photo here, it is so cool [ photo ] :) The area has lots of brush and trees including prickly pear with very big ears which I've noticed quite a bit up here.

We encountered a few other hikers on this leg as you enter and leave the wilderness part of the hike. It's a $300 fine if a bike rider passes through here. A little further south and the Spaceship Rock (also apparently called Muffin Rock but we went with Spaceship in 2009, thus this picture [ photo ] ) finally shows up. As we passed by we noticed an ocotillo garden and took some photos. As you get more to the other side of the rock, it looks more like a spaceship.

We continued hiking to the southeastern side to a junction in this drainage area. Here you have the option to continue west on the loop but Ambika noticed that the Big Park Loop takes us to the TH so we opted to do that. I had not been on the Big Park Loop so we were pleasantly surprised. It is a fairly busy bike route though so keep your eye out. It's not easy for them either as it does involve a couple little uphills if you're coming from the west. I don't remember there being a Big Park Loop when we hiked this area in 2009. Anyway, we really liked it as you really got a longer view to the Butte and Bell Rock and with the cool little clouds swirling around, it made for some nice photos.

The TH was even busier when we got back. We were surprised to see so many people of all ages and dogs as it was now in the high 80s. We grabbed the cut watermelon out of the cooler and munched on that before taking off to PJs in the Village for lunch. The ribs are great!

I did post some more views from our balcony at the beginning of the Photoset as well as a couple other touristy things... in remembrance of Randall from back in the day.

Went up to Oak Creek this morning to ride an epic loop on the mountain bikes with SCA. Got to Bell Rock trail head around 6:30 and easily found a parking space. Surprised at how few other trail users we saw once we got a small distance from a trailhead.

Made another road trip to Sedona to hike more unhiked trails there. I've been wanting to knock out some of the easier, tourist-ridden ones in the central area for a while now. I see them all the time driving through and I wanted to check them out.

We started just about 7:30am, just before the sun hit the horizon and lit up Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte with the golden dawn lighting. We did a counter-clockwise loop starting with the Big Park loop, then connecting to the Courthouse Butte loop, and headed north to the Llama Trail. At the high point of the Courthouse Butte loop there were very nice views to the north of the rest of Sedona. Also saw some hot air balloons on the other side of Cathedral Rock, making for some nice shots.

When we finished the Llama Trail and hit the Little Horse Trail, we had already done about 5.6 miles. I was kind of planning to go to Chicken Point or the Chapel of the Cross, but each was about a mile and a half more to hike. I needed to be back in Mesa before 6pm to finish shopping errands, so I wanted to keep the mileage no more than 12 miles. I decided to head back on Little Horse and the Bell Rock path and then did a little more of the inter-loop trails between the Courthouse Butte and Big Park loops.

Once we hit the Bell Rock Path, it was tourist central. Right off the bat we were approached by 2 older ladies saying they were lost and wanted to know how to get to the vortex. :-s I asked which one and they said Bell Rock, which was 3 miles away. The realized they didn't want to hike that far and decided to find a closer trailhead. As we hiked past Bell Rock, it was practically covered in tourists climbing all over it.

Early on we seemed run into a lot of people from PA, many of them Steeler fans. Seemed to be a running theme throughout the day. We were probably the 3rd or 4th car in the parking lot when we arrived, and when we returned it was filled and overrun with cars waiting for open spots.

Chris invited me to do a series of trails up in Sedona with him and Wally, and I thought that would be a good way to spend a Saturday morning.

An early start before the sun was up out of the Bell Rock Trailhead. It was chilly for sure...20 something. All three of us were feeling the cold for sure!

I have done the Courthouse Butte Loop and the trails around Bell Rock, but not the others he had loaded up. The early start gave the first part of the hike a little escape from the masses, but we still saw some hikers out there early on.

The Llama trail was a nice one as was the Little Horse. The area around the Chapel looks interesting. Gotta hit that area next time.

We made good time, as Wally was in front moving out. Holding back for Chris and I, no doubt, but we still knocked out 11 miles in about 4 hours. No major elevation or scary climbs on this one. Just some nice trails in a very scenic area.

On our way back, the crowds really started in. The trails were packed with hikers and mountain bikers. Poor Bell Rock was completely infested with tourists, climbing all over the place.

The trailhead parking lot was totally full when we returned. Some guy offered Chris $10 for his parking spot when we got back....ha ha. He found another one before we were finished loading up.

It always a good day hiking with Chris and Wally and this day was no exception.

Met my wife's dad up in Oak Creek Village to do a couple of hikes for his birthday. He's an avid hiker/walker who use to do Bill Williams every year on his birthday. He's starting to slow down but still likes to get out and do a few miles. I thought the Big Park Loop would be a nice fit. So we hit that trail in a CCW loop. I switched it up a bit by doing a segment cleverly named the Middle Trail as it bisect the Big Park Loop. The trail was very doable for him and we had a nice walk taking in the scenery. I was trying to take mental notes as I did the hike so I could do a trail description for this loop but got distracted by conversation. No wild life, but encountered 7 hikers and 5 dogs! I've discovered that Oak Creek Village is a dog walking community  I bet Rowdy would love it up there

Belated post. This was my second hike of the day. I had a small window to get a hike in and this loop looked like the perfect fit. This trail is literally located just outside of Oak Creek Village and lies just south of Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte. It had rained hard the previous day so I wasn't sure what to expect, but aside for a few puddles the trail was in remarkable good conditions. I did this loop, actually more of a lasso, going in a CCW direction. The trail is relatively flat, though by going in this direction, there is one small climb that might get you winded. The trail has some small pines that will provide a little shade, but is fairly exposed. The views are Sedona beautiful! This seems to be pretty much a "locals" trail. It doesn't really go anywhere (though it does connect to some other official trail), but is very convenient and very easy to do. My garmin died in the middle of this jog so I don't have exact mileage, but the map at the TH makes me think I went about 2.5 miles.

This is a paid parking TH, as are most spots in Sedona. Since I was up there for the weekend, I had the option of doing $15 for 7 days or $20 for a year :-k . Easy decision and one that will get me up there for regular visits :D .

No wildlife on the trail. Though the day before my wife and I were driving down one of the nearby streets and saw a bobcat! That was my first. Even though I wasn't on a trail I'm still counting it. :)
