This little overnight backpack into Banff was one of the highlights of my time in the Canadian Rockies earlier this summer. Normally this is a tough backcountry permit to get, but I was able to snag one with a walk up because I was there just before the peak summer season started in Banff.

Day 1:

The hike in was absolutely spectacular. In particular, when you begin to reach the expansive views that dominate the Healy Pass area. From there it was a wildflower romp down a generally gorgeous trail to Egypt Lake. After setting up camp, Blanco and I hiked up to Scarab and Mummy Lakes. Although, it should be noted that we turned around just before Mummy Lake, as the snow got a little too deep and soft for late afternoon travel. Scarab was very scenic despite being frozen, but staring down at the top of the waterfall pouring down into Egypt Lake was the highlight. A lot of grizzly bear signs in the area, but no sightings. After spending some time along the shore of Lake Egypt, we settled in for dinner, camp chores and bed just before a steady rain started that would continued on and off for most of the night and morning.

Day 2:

Early wake up to hike to the very scenic Pharaoh and Blackrock Lakes, we returned the same way, broke a "drier" camp and then completed the easy hike back out to the trailhead and ski resort.

A hike that starts out at the Sunshine Village Ski Resort just outside of Banff, Alberta. The views along this hike would have been much better without the smoke and clouds but you can only control what you can control. The smoke wasn't as bad as our day at Lake Louise but it was still pretty bad. However the end of hike has you hiking across some lovely sub-alpine meadows. Perhaps the smoke scared off the wildlife as though it looked like prime habitat for elk and/or bears, we only saw ground squirrels along the trail.
