Another figure-eight, different route, more on-trail and less on wild horse trails while south/east of Bush, all horse trails on the other side.

Still feeling ok, but I must spend 90% of the time off-the-seat to keep the jolting to a minimum. Now that I'm concentrating more on it, I'm quite surprised just how rough the smooth trails are.

Just a quick and easy loop starting from the Coon Bluff/Bush Highway intersection, along wild horse trails out to Scorpion Alley, over to Scorpion, west across Bush Highway, horse trails over to Salt River Trail 100 and finally a lazy arc back to the car.
We only met one rattlesnake, which was at the edge of the Scorpion Alley Tail. After the first quick warning rattle it didn't feel threatened enough to rattle much more at all... and Tracey wasn't about to allow me to rile it up just for a video. :stop:
And so my video turned out to be a whole lot of nothing... silent rattles don't make for post-worthy video. ](*,)

Another lazy day of activity moderation hiking.
I started from the Coon Bluff Road/Bush Highway intersection and began by heading SW to see if the deer I scared up a few days ago were still around... they weren't.
Next I went up the hill and back NE, crossed Coon Bluff Road and headed for the hill next to Bush Highway, which entailed crossing through a barbed wire fence on each side of Coon Bluff Rd.
Climbed the hill, back down and east across Bush, along the highway until turning in at the Scorpion Trail TH, up the hill, back down to Scorpion following it until turning onto Scorpion Alley and finally following a wild horse trail back to the start.
Just went over 550 miles with these boots... almost time for retirement. They are already the most economical hiking boots I've ever owned at roughly nine cents per mile.
Hmmmm... if I use them only on flat/easy trails from now on, I wonder, can I get 600 miles out of them?

After two somewhat worse-than-wished-for hikes yesterday this was supposed to be an easy out-and-back on the Salt River Trail, but as usual a loop is always more fun.
Although I was open to it, we had no snake encounters... and Tracey was just fine with that.

Tracey hadn't been out on a bike for... hmmm, let's see, some two years? But when she heard how much fun I had on this loop she was ready to give it a shot.

It only took me an hour to get her bike (my old mountain bike) ready to go... you know, pump up both flat tires, clean/lube the chain, adjust the derailleurs and check the brakes.

Once we hit the trail, it only took her a mile or so before remembering which thumb or finger on which control did what. She did fine where Scorpion climbs 100' in the first mile, had to work a bit harder with the 200' more in the next mile, but once we hit Wild Horse it came easier, then heading downhill on Stinger... wow, that is a breeze!
Scorpion Alley climbs just 52' over .8 mile so it was easy enough, and of course the last mile back on Scorpion was another breeze.

Back to Bush Highway, Tracey still has some gas in the tank so we headed out toward the Salt River in what could probably be called "Wild Horse Flat" as we passed at least six separate herds of 6-8 horses out there.

Of course, I had to stop to film a colt nursing. Priceless!
1:09 Video: Wild Horse Foal Nursing

Kind of funny... when we headed back along the fence-line just west of Bush Highway there were probably two dozen people lined up along the fence, all with cameras in hand, some with lenses large enough to choke a horse...

Even funnier, as we rode by, one asked, "Is it ok be on that side of the fence?"
Of course... how else can you get closer photos of the horses?
(Don't worry, while that's what I thought, I just said "Sure!" and kept on riding.)

Did another shorter hike with the kids again. I hadn't hike the new trails over in the Hawes Pass area, so this looked like a good hike for them. We parked along the Bush Highway again and headed north on the Scorpion Trail. then we took the right turn and headed west on the Scorpion Alley Trail, and did a counter clockwise loop on the Stinger and High Horse Trails. Then back the way we came on the Scorpion Trail(s).

Things are starting to green up alot now after the winter rains. Lots of wildflowers, as well. We saw one buckhorn cholla early on that was split open in several spots. Wondering if it's because it got too much water, or had some disease.

I found a few unmapped trails that crossed the trails we were on. The most prominent one was at the northwest corner of the Stinger Trail. It looks like it kind of parallels the north portion of the Stinger Trail, but it also heads further west. More to explore for another day.

All the snow on the mountains is gone, except for the lingering spots on Four Peaks. Still nice views to the north. Saw a few mountain bikers and 3 trail runners. Not too crowded, especially considering the nice weather.

My first ride since back surgery. The steady uphill from Bush was pretty rough on the knees but easing up on the pace and they were fine. Gotta love it north-bound on the east segment of the not-fully completed Stinger Trail... barely had to pedal for more than 100 feet on the mile-long downhill run to Scorpion Alley.

The ride felt so good I have a feeling my hiking stats are gonna suffer at the expense of my mountain biking stats for 2019. No matter, at least I'll be doing a more of both this year.

Wanted to check out this new trail so I did an out and back on Wildhorse while including this new section. I really enjoyed the downhill direction. the uphill isn't bad, its a gradual climb. I look forward to the other new trails being completed, should alow for some nice loop options.

Although officially all volunteer work was to cease during the government shut-down, that sure wasn't about to stop the 40-50 volunteers who showed up. And barely 90 minutes later (including the 1-mile hike on Scorpion Trail to reach the construction site) the trail was completed.
While some folks stayed and began construction on the more technical Stinger Trail, most had holiday/family obligations to tend to instead. I didn't but I had another hike planned so I skipped out as well.
