Another stay over in Chandler meant an easy drive to the Pyramid Trail Head. Before leaving for the hike did a short one mile dog jog which resulted in a left quad strain which was annoying all day, chalk it up to just another old age malady. Ended up making this a large lasso loop, went up Busera for a change instead of as usual coming down from the Gila connector. At least from above at the junction with Busera Canyon these trails are looking familiar to me. Cut over to the visible Gila Trail , took it and went up and past the Busera connector all the way back down to the junction of Pyramid. After reading the excellent guide about Cholla Flats Trail decided to try it , figuring at worse I would end up on my familiar Chandler Blvd Trail  Only saw one other along this trail and they took one of the neighborhood side trails, by now it was heating up and I hoped to see an ambitious youngster with a lemonade stand in one of the many backyards I passed but alas no.Thought there was some nice 360 views of the surrounding workout trails visible, this trail is well signed, no shade however so even too warm for a spring day. Cruised back to the trail head on Pyramid. Surprised I’ve not seen a rattlesnake in South Mountain Park ! In fact no wildlife spotted today except a roadrunner with a lizard in its beak.

Slept in a little today so I decided to do something close to home. Got to the Pyramid TH just before 6:30am. Got to say I’m liking the 202 loop! Easy drive. After yesterday’s long hike this was a nice change....Cholla Flats is pretty much that....flat. Decided to do the loop in a clockwise fashion this time. Got to say, I think that is the way the way to go. There are a couple of hills that have to be tackled, but they are short and you are always rewarded with a downhill slope after. Encountered 19 hikers, but only 3 on the Cholla section. No wildlife. At 6am, temps were great in the 50’s.

Short afternoon hike. Temps said 49 degrees when I left Pyramid TH but I think it was a little warmer than that when the wind died down. Just got started when I got word that the GK were coming over for a sleepover so I cut my intended hike short. Went to check the bees on the way up Pyramid and decided to walk down the second wash that crosses the trail. Glad I did!! With the crisp clean air and quite made the hike a pleasurable one. Even though it was short I got to see some different things. Came out on Cholla Flats trail and saw one biker. With the nice rain we had, no dust flew when the biker went by. 🙂 when I came out of the wash, the Estrellas, a-washed in sunlight, seemed to dominate the landscape. Few hikers on the way back to the TH. About 10 more cars dotted the parking lot as when I started. Great day for a hike!! HAPPY HIKING!!😀😀

Checked out some new trails in the Pyramid area of South Mountain. I started from the Pyramid Trailhead up the Bursera Trail. I saw the lower trail heading west towards Bursera Canyon, but I wanted to get the ascent out of the way before the heat got too crazy. the climb wasn't too bad, I got halfway up before the sun even hit the horizon. Along the Bursera I saw a hawk circling above and managed to get a halfway decent picture of it. Only wildlife I saw.

Descended into Bursera Canyon from the ridgeline all way to Chandler Blvd, then headed back and took the lower trail back towards the trailhead. Saw another trail spur that heads out to Chandler Blvd again, then headed east and did the lower half of the Cholla Flats loop. I had never done that southern half of the loop before, and didn't even know it was there until today. I explored a few more trail spurs that mostly faded away and dead ended. Finished in just over 4 hours and before it was too hot (or else I'm used to it by now). Definitely seemed less humid than the last 2 to 3 weekends. A little busy early in the morning, but then it cleared out as the temperature rose.

Once again, the gate was open pretty close to on time, so Denny & I got started around 0515. We did Cholla Flats first. Easy hiking. Warm, no breeze. After that, we headed up Pyramid. Warm, but shade and a breeze. Said hi to a few familiar faces. Very few people out today, even when we finished. As always, great conversation & hike!

Linda showed me another hike I hadn’t done at South Mountain. Just in time for a nice Sunrise. We also did part of the Pyramid to get some aeg and a couple more miles. A little warm out already. Thanks for amusing me Linda! 😁 Like Haz, you rock!

In the area this morning so took time for a desert stroll. Enjoyed the loop. Howling coyotes close by.

After work jog. Celebrated Earth Day with another face plant ](*,) . What better way to commemorate this day than kissing Mother Earth. Did the loop CCW. Very easy to distinguish the newly made trail of the Cholla Loop (wider, composed of powdery dirt) and the part that was "adopted" from the user Gila trail (more of a single track and much more rocky). Trail is easy to follow has numerous posts along the way. There are two different connector trails that come in form the subdivision.

Got started a little after 0500. Headed up Pyramid Trail, then after about 3/4 mile, turned onto the new Cholla Flats Loop. About 2/3 of this new loop consists of existing social trails, with some newly constructed trail connecting everything together. Most of the new trail is along the southern half of the loop, and is almost sidewalk smooth at the moment, too bad that won't last long. Nothing too exciting, but nice to check it out. Once I connected back to Pyramid, I headed up to the top, then turned around about 1/2 mile shy of my usual turnaround point. Nice morning, and I didn't see as many hikers as last week.
