Day 4 of Pinetop vacation :y: . Got on the trail around 5am. Still a little dark out, but the trail was defined well enough that I was able to start without a headlamp. Did the loop in a CCW direction. Actually had to go about .5 miles in to get to the juncture where the loop started. Making a right, started a gradual climb up a nearby hill. Within .5 miles of starting the loop, I came upon the short cut connector. (Most of the longer loop trails in the White Mountain Trail System offer "short cuts" to offer variety in loop lengths). I opted to bypass the short cut. The trail never came close to the top, but the surrounding land fell away that I got a nice "panoramic" view of the lands to the north and east. After that, the trail dropped down, briefly joined a dirt road, before beginning what felt like a long monotonous route through the White Mountain "lowlands." The trail did a number of twists and turns, with a constant, very gradual decline through shrub, juniper pine and some taller pine. By the time the second climb came, I was excited for it. It was a little more intense than the first, but not long in duration. This climb and the elevated section that it brought me to was probably the nicest part of the trail. It was also here (about 6 miles in) that I came upon the juncture for the Sawmill Connector Trail. After the climb, the trail pretty much maintains its elevation skirting along the lower base of a mountain as it works its way back toward the TH. Actually a nice trail for running (though my time is very disappointing); a little rocky during the elevation changes, but otherwise very smooth. However the trail didn't offer much in the scenic sense with either its close or distant views. Met one biker while I was out there. Wildlife...nada. Just some cows. Can't argue with the temps. Low 60's

This hike was in my Boots and Burgers book. I didn't start this hike until after 9 AM. There is not a lot of trail shade so it may be more enjoyable with a earlier start. The trail is marked well with a P+# every quarter mile or so. I went counter clockwise. Lots of Oak, Juniper, and Pine. A few views here and there. Seems like a nice regular hike for locals. I saw two hikers two Equestrians and one Mountain Biker. After the hike the book recommended the Lion's Den for a burger. The burger was pretty good and they had a nice beer selection so I had my usual soda :) . Nice day up north. :y:

Started out doing this hike but didn't get far before we turned around because of the mud and snow. Oh well, maybe in a couple more weeks.
