did the bog/kent loop with a trip out to roger's rock.

started from amphitheater TH and took that spur out to main loop. There was actually still water in kent canyon, running in some spots with little pools.

route out to roger's rock is in predictably great shape. the big tree where the spur to the rock splits from the route up fern canyon fell. random. nice and green with the fern looking good early in the season. took a break on the rock - a great place to be

back to the main loop for the steep climb up to kent springs, i love this part of the loop. nice and shaded. great water flow in sylvester spring. nothing at kent spring. coming down bog there is maybe one downed tree - no issue at all to get over. went and checked bog spring - still water in the trough. i followed the pipe and found a loose leaky connection. tried to mess with it as best i could and i left it looking better than i found it but who knows how long that will last.

rest of the hike was just very pleasant.

I thought the canyon would be crowded for President's Day, but that wasn't the case. Trailhead temp was 51F, not cold enough to go shirtless. It was drier than I thought, but there was some puddles in the creek. I got lost by taking the wrong trail back to the car, but it wasn't too bad. I had camera issues, but I didn't see much anyway this trip.

We made it around the full loop this time. We head right at the fork 0.7mi in, rather than left. We love this hike as you get to see the forest and look out over the desert. Great hike if you're looking for touches of fall. I would imagine there's typically more water than what we saw, due to the drought this year. Typically pretty windy in the canyon and quite a bit cooler. Highly recommend this loop.

Didn't make it the whole loop today, but really like this trail. We went up the Kent Springs trail to the first water stop and turned around. Very pretty forest, fun to hike in the fall. You'll see plenty of deer. Path was very rocky. We will definitely be heading back to do the full loop soon.

Did a loop including a trip out to Rogers rock. Checked out the Kent spring cabin too, it’s been a while. Nice and green up there but the flowers aren’t really going yet and the creeks are just trickling. Heard 3 trogons but didn’t look for them.

Madera canyon is kind of being overrun right now with the catalinas being closed. Felt lucky to find a parking spot

This morning I joined several members of my community hiking club for a popular lollipop loop in the Madera Canyon Recreation Area in the Santa Rita Mountains. We parked at the Madera Trailhead Picnic Area and began our hike on the Bog Spring Trail. As we stepped out of the car our ears were treated to the magical sound of running water in Madera Creek across the road.

We chose to hike the Bog-Kent Springs loop in a clockwise direction, Bog Spring first. Although the spring box was full and overflowing, there was no water flowing in Bog's canyon despite all the recent rain. However the forest was as lush and green as I have ever seen it.

As we hiked from Bog to Kent Spring and rounded a corner on the first ridge we could clearly hear water running below in Kent Canyon. Upon arrival at Kent Spring we found only a trickle of water in Kent Creek's north fork, much to our surprise. Where was all that water that we heard earlier from above? Below the spring the north fork was virtually dry.

However, the south fork of Kent Creek was a different story with a robust flow coming down and out of Fern Canyon. The water made for delightful hiking along the middle portion of the Kent Spring Trail. The rain-saturated ground made for good footing while going down the steep and usually loose Kent Springs Trail.

We caught a glimpse of Kent Falls from the trail and quickly decided it was worth a visit this morning. So at the lowest of the Kent Creek crossings we took a short (maybe 500') detour up a route on the left (north) side of Kent Creek to Kent Falls where we took a relaxing break. The amount of water coming over the falls was exceptional for this early in the monsoon season.

Hiking conditions this morning were ideal. Although the air was damp the cool temperature mitigated the humidity. The recent pesky deer flies were nowhere to be found and the damp soil made for good traction. We had shade most of the way thanks to an early start and cloud cover as we hiked out. And except for another small group at Kent Falls that left shortly after we arrived, we had the whole loop to ourselves.

...just another crummy day in the Sonoran Desert!

bad forecast and having worked all evening the night before, i did not know what i could sneak in. just drove to the santa ritas and decided on the fly. figured i would get rained on, and really didn't care as long as it wasn't crazy stuff.

80% humidity hit me instantly. everything was wet and green. water starting to flow in the canyons again, not hearty yet though. saw numerous deer, including one majestically leap over a relatively large ravine...which blew my mind. underrated athleticism there folks. wow. Roger's Rock is always a favorite place of mine to visit.

last mile in the rain. heavy stuff mercifully waited until 5 minutes after i finished :y:

From the amphitheater: up BS#156 and over to Kent Spring, continuing up to the crest on Four Springs trail, south on CT#144, down OB#372, down Nature trail to start. Generally good trail conditions on Four Springs except the east-west section near Armour Spring, where the track is faint and overgrown, with some pink ribbons to mark the route. Went back up KS#157 to close the Bog/Kent loop.

Coupled this loop with an additional out-and back two miles of the Four Springs Trail above Kent Spring.
Trails are in terrific condition and well-marked. I was interested to read while in Madera the history of 'Whiskey High Ball' Kent..... quite the fella and namesake of the spring.

I was surprised at the steepness of this trail up to Kent Spring (a vile , post-apocalyptic looking grey substance in the cement pool), and then again surprised at how easy it was after that. The spring on the way up was flowing heavily, but the trail also passed over several dry creek-beds. Also, after Kent Springs, on the very narrow trail that winds along the side of the mountain, there were LOTS of bees at several points. There must be hives close to the trail. At first I noticed the sound, and mistook it for mosquitoes. It was not mosquitoes. I scurried past without incident, but it made me a bit nervous.
It was about 65 degrees, 20 degrees cooler than Tucson. Lovely day! Except for the bees...

Chose this as my daughter's (7 years old) first backpacking trip. We started around 2:30pm and went clockwise. Bog Springs was clear but very popular with the bees. Bog Springs is at about half of the elevation gain. It looked like there were a few potential spots to put down a tent there, so I gave my daughter the option of stopping for the day and going back the way we came the next morning. She wanted to make it all the way up so we kept going. It was slow going, but we made it to Kent Springs about 20 minutes before sunset. There's a grassy area with an old fire ring behind Kent Springs and that's where we set up for the night. The next morning was all downhill with a lot of loose rocks. I had to hold her hand to keep her from falling on the steep parts. We both agreed Sylvester Springs was the best of the three. Overall, I think this was just the right level of challenge for my daughter. She felt a real sense of accomplishment having finished the hike. Being the high point of the hike, Kent Springs is a good place to camp if you're doing a short backpacking trip with kids.

My numbers are a tad higher then the official route. Going to Bog Springs added a couple tenths and I went up Four Springs Trail a little by mistake. I left Bog Springs on my route but took the Four Springs Trail off so somebody didn't follow it.
I hit the trail a little before 1:00pm. It was a little warm with a breeze. I went clockwise. It's a climb but there are switchbacks to help ease your pain. Bog Springs was clean and Full. There are some big trees in this area. When I got to Kent Springs I was a little confused. I thought the trail going up was my trail and I was wrong. Great views from up here. When I looked at route scout I found the error of my ways. That trail is not marked. I found out later it was Four Springs Trail. I went back down to (dirty) Kent Springs and found the right trail. In two shakes of a lambs tail it opens up to look like a road. No switchbacks on this side so it is a little steeper. Sylvester Spring looked even better then Bogs. Shortly after the spring there was a creek running good and the water was crystal clear. The trail followed for a half mile or so then turned away. From there your back to the trailhead in no time.I saw about 8 people and a couple dogs. Maybe try and start a little earlier next time. :)
