Don't you love it when you have a really good hike :D ?! Me too. It also signifies I'm getting into hiking shape. I know it won't last long since it's going to heat up soon but I'm enjoying the moment. Let's see: temps in the 60s, a brisk breeze/gusty wind to the point I was glad I had an extra long sleeve shirt in the car, no need for a hat or sunglasses. I did forget my insulated water bottle but I always carry a plastic water bottle in Tonto's door.

Hiked clockwise and managed the steep slippery hills pretty well and powered up. Hiked near both towers and the dam. The lemon-yellow blooms of the Palo Verde Trees were a delight to see during most of the hike, thus more pictures than I would normally take :stop:. Also, the Desert Lavender was really healthy on the paved hill. I still couldn't get over the overcast skies for May and I even experienced that foreign substance that comes from them.

So many people out for a Wednesday morning and lots of dogs too. Many folks would leash the dogs up when they approached. Oh, and I saw a ranger on the trail, altho he couldn't have gone very far as he came back to his truck while I was drinking my beer.

WATCH 7:53-9:48AM, 5.25 miles, 1343-2131 elevation. 122 avg bpm/157 max. 22% Zone 5 max, 20% Zone 4 anaerobic, 33% Zone 3 aerobic, 25% Zone 2 weight control burning 687 calories. Starting temp 66.1, mostly cloudy and 27% humidity.

angela suggested this combo for today
we got going around 1300 (once i was escorted to the proper meeting location  )
i've done north mountain and shaw butte twice before, most recently in 2014 :o
this is the first time i've been on all of 306 and connected shaw butte with north mountain
we went up shaw butte first, looked around a bit up top, then continued on the loop
then up north mountain and back along 7th street
brittlebush and scorpionweed, then some lupine near north mountain
sunny skies
nice to be back up here - i enjoyed the hike
i also enjoyed the root beer and peanuts afterwards :)
thanks angela!

Kelly had promised me a hike before the end of the month and this is what I came up with. I threw in North Mountain cuz I know she likes Peaks. And, of course, as luck would have it, this would be the warmest day of the week :( . She was at the Peoria TH but I wanted to meet at the North Mountain VC cuz it's nicer; especially for the after-hike beers. HAZ blipped out on me; I had to fill in the route from the bottom of the paved hill over to the North Mountain saddle.

So off we went and we were immediately distracted by the loud birds singing; another couple hiking near us commented as well. I decided to see if I could film one of the birds and I was able to do that, but then it wouldn't shut up  . [ youtube video ] And the reason it was so loud, a Northern Mockingbird. I took Kelly up on the dam before we crossed over to the main trail toward Shaw Butte.

As we stepped on the Shaw Butte Trail I noticed this column of black rock next to a smoothed over trail from where you get on it from the south. In fact, they did some incredible work as it is now completely filled in. As you may know, it is a road used to get to the towers and was in really rough shape. The drive up had to be quite the ordeal. Well no more; at least until the south saddle. It is really quite impressive how they filled in all the divits and built three major drainage channels. The old pipes are no longer there either. I took pictures to document this awesome repaired access road/trail. Apparently the leveling took place mid-December.

The Brittlebush was showing off so brightly I felt the need to put on my sunglasses :D . It kept us company for much of our hike today. You could see it blooming on the various surrounding mountainsides too. There was other flora including a really nice Pincushion with one bloom. Up at the towers, we checked out the rock pile with the two flags and then headed down the paved road, but not before admiring the distant views north.

I sent Kelly on her way to check out the western towers. I normally do this but not if I'm going to hike North Mountain as well. So I had a nice little break. The Brittlebush lined both sides of the trail going toward Cloud Nine Motel area. Going down from here is not the best trail tread as it's slippery and steep. Oh, we smelled the Scorpionweed's In-N-Out Burger. I've noticed that smell on several of my city hikes and today, we figured out what it was. We headed down the southeast side which was pretty ripped up when I hiked it in October but it looks like they've done some work on it.

It seemed to be getting warm by this point as we had lost our breeze. We hiked Trail 100 north until the junction with the connector to North Mountain. There was lots and lots of lupine along here :) and as usual, nearly impossible to get a good photo. Luckily our missing breeze also greeted us at the saddle and some shade as we hiked toward the pavement. At the North Mountain Trail I told Kelly to go ahead at her pace and basically I would just keep hiking and would see her on the way down.

Fortunately, there was some shade which really helped. When I came to the last turn south I had decided if there wasn't a breeze this is where I would stop. Well guess what... yep, a breeze, so I headed up that last little stretch and strained a bit to see where Kelly was. Well she was hiding off to the left where I thot she might be waiting for me. So we finished the last little stretch together even though she had gone up and around the towers already.

There were some nice flowers on our way down enjoying the shade. My poor big toes did not enjoy this journey as they are still recovering from a hike where the new shoes were 1/2 size too small which I didn't realize until I had to come down Union Peak.

We enjoyed our beers and roasted peanuts at the ramada off the parking lot. It was a good hiking hike for me and Kelly tolerated my whining about the heat and the steep from time to time. Fun to catch up too.

WATCH 1:06PM forgot to turn off the hike. Elevation 1470-2264. 133bpm/171 max burning 1515 calories. Temp 72.8 sunny and 12% humidity.

Brittlebush is probably at its prime. Some Scorpionweed here and there.

Up from 7th Ave TH. Very nice out this afternoon. Clear views in all directions and the brittlebush is alive and well. All of the mountains to the north looked super majestic.
Took a trip to a side “peak” on the way down for some extra elevation gain.

After work hike. Wanted to enjoy the “elements” and this nearby trail made for an excellent opportunity. Parked at the TH off of Central. Did a loop going CCW. The road to the top has been upgraded - slightly. It has been graded, so a lot of the rough spots have been smoothed over. I think I prefer the old rugged road; it felt more trailesque. The wind was as advertised. Nonstop. When I got to the top, near the towers, the wind hitting the towers and their attached “drums” made it sound like jetliner was constantly flying overhead. Visibility was limited. It seemed like a sheet of rain was just off in the distance, but it was just dust in the air. I was surprised that with all the wind that the clouds hardly seemed to be moving. After hitting the peak I continued down the west side. This west side is mainly a road, some of it deteriorating asphalt. No grading has been done on this side, (though this side wasn’t nearly as bad as the eastern side was). When you hit the southern end the trail becomes much more like a trail…a rocky, meandering single track. Probably the best part of the loop. The east side of the 306 trail is the flattest part of the loop. Lot of the trails in this area. Surprised to note that the 306 is the trail that actually stays closest to Shaw Butte. In the past I’m pretty sure that I’ve taken the Christiansen and user trails to make the loop. Nice hike. Weather certainly made it a different experience.

I had to get the mail so I planned to do this hike on the way back. It appears they won't be able to fix our box for two months :( . At the North Mountain VC, when I initially got out of Tonto 3 I thot I may have erred in doing an afternoon hike, but as it turned out, the temperature seemed pleasant enough.

I hiked counterclockwise and as usual, as I go up I give myself the right to bail if I don't have it. I am still trying to get up to snuff with the elevation part of my hiking. I'm also trying to hit all of my normal city hikes that I think keep me in shape. Happily, I did pretty well on the hills so I felt pretty good. I also hiked to the other towers as it's so close as you wrap around the backside (west).

Once I started rounding the old Cloud 9 motel area, the trail deteriorated substantially and was this way all the way until the bottom on the southeast side. I tried to take a photo of one section that is now very wide but the shadows made it hard to see. Needless to say, it was very slow going.

I was surprised to see as many hikers as I did during this time frame; one fellow with a backpack and puffing pretty hard coming up that back hill. Sunday I saw a hiker with a backpack too so apparently folks have some big trips coming up. There were probably about 1/2 dozen lizards and I saw quite a few quail in the lower section near the VC. I took the longer trail back.

In the parking lot, I had my beer and opened my mail. Holy Cow! have you seen that booklet on what and who we are voting for this election :o . Sheesh. And of course, all the political advertisements in all sorts of shapes and sizes and colors.

WATCH: 1:42-3:51PM, 5.45 miles, 1469-2267 elevation, 138 avg bpm/166 max. 47% Zone 5 maximum, 44% Zone 4 anaerobic, 9% Zone 3 aerobic burning 928 calories. Temp 71.9 Sunny degrees and only 19% humidity :)

I had to pick up the mail. Ya, not my normal route. Our side of the mail boxes has been broken for a few weeks. I get emails from USPS as to what is in my mail so unless it's important, I don't have to drive 11 miles, and in this case, hike, to get it everyday. This hike is on the way to the post office off of Hatcher and 7th St. I think the last time I was at this post office was nearly thirty years ago as I go to the closer one on Rose Garden and Cave Creek Rd. You would think they would have changed to that office by now, since the growth of the Valley.

Anyway, I realized I forgot my water bottle but I happen to carry a partially filled plastic bottle of water so I grabbed that and added some more water at the VC. I started hiking on the 100 and veered around to take the valley up via the west side and then head south to join up with the paved portion of the North Mountain Trail. It adds a little more mileage and I can avoid some of the road noise which I detest so much. There were quite a few hikers out until I made the turn east.

It seemed a bit humid as I made my hike up North Mountain so I was glad to hit the shade putting one foot in front of the other and extending my stride. I thot I would probably have to stop to catch my breath but I was able to keep moving. I always look forward to that last turn. I made my way up to the towers and headed back down.

Along the way I noted there had been quite a bit of rock fall in the cement gutters on the inside of the road. In fact, the rocks sometimes covered the built-in drainages; I wonder if they are aware of that? My shins were surprisingly, still a little sore from Sunday's hike. I haven't had sore shins in a long time so I tried to be more deliberate with my steps.

Once back down to the 100 I decided to hike over to and on the dam. I would take the Shaw Butte Trail back to the VC except it was a little further distance going south than I thot. Oh well, no big deal. Still lots of hikers and dogs out. It definitely felt a tad warmer.

While drinking my Huckleberry Hefe I was surprised to learn their trademark logo was from Carroll College, one of the colleges I went to for a year to do my Montana legislative internship.

Sneak peak: on our trip via Cedar Breaks we stumbled on quite a site next to Panguitch Lake. There were hundreds of White Pelicans flying in the air, not in any particular direction. I think they were just flying the thermals. It was an amazing site and not easy to film but I did and here is your sneak peak - [ youtube video ]

WATCH: 7:50-9:32AM 4.77 miles, 1378-2064 feet, 132 avg bpm/163 max. 29% zone 5 maximum, 43% zone 4 anaerobic, 28% zone 3 aerobic burning 668 calories. Temp 71.5 sunny and 44% humidity, finishing with temp of 80 sunny and 32% humidity.

counterclockwise. Going up that first hill it seemed really hot and I gave thot to turning around in a short bit but I persevered and made it to the top. There was just a tad of a breeze that helped my motivation.

I emailed Ambika back while on top as I was one of the few to get a backpacking permit at Glacier Park for mid-July (3 nites) and she wants to come. Glacier Park didn't start filling permits until mid-April even though we all applied March 15th; a new procedure. This makes it very hard to plan when you have to delay your plans a month so hopefully they'll go back to the old system because now we have to try and find lodging and tickets for the GTTSR.

Nothing new to report on the trail. I did see a few hummingbirds on that steep paved section. It's usually where I see them. Going down that part is pretty hard on the knees. I went up and looped the far western tower before heading down and around the west side. Hikers were scattered the entire length of the trail coming and going; altho this is the second time I've passed someone.

Going down that south and east side is still slippery so you have to pay attention. I was glad to be over on the east side as it seemed warm. When I headed east a breeze started to hit me in the face which was quite refreshing. I tripped hard a couple times but stayed upright :) . I can still feel that plate in my wrist 15 1/2 months later. I assume that is not going to change so I just have to live with it.

Started my beer slightly before 9:30 but close enough; after all, it does have fruit. Both of the Q-Trip frozen cappuccino machines were broken :(

WATCH: 5.16 miles (almost the same as RS), low point 1369/high point 2151, bpm are MIA :-k but I burned 612 calories and god knows how much sweat. Starting temp 69.8 and sunny with 28% humidity finishing at 9:19AM

A mid-morning to start hike of a clockwise loop starting on the south side. Needed elevation practice. Not a good day for me, hopefully just one of those "bad hikes" I have on occasion. I even backtracked back up part of a hill to see if I could go for the tower but nope, it just wasn't happening today... plus I was hungry . However, I got 'er done.

Two poppies, three lizards, a few quail, one hummingbird. Lots of Fiddleneck getting ready to bloom and some brittlebush already blooming.

Quite a few hikers and a few dogs.
