i don't like urban hikes, especially in the valley. if it's too easy to get to it encourages random people, some who have never hiked before, to go there. also, the views suck. i don't like the city close up, or from a little farther away. maybe at night, with the twinkle lights... but this particular trail isn't available at night. i started at 6 am and the parking lot was packed. i left at 8:30 and there were still a lot of people out there, some just starting. it's too hot. i do this type of hike for one reason... fitness, and i'm really out of shape. this is a fairly easy hike, and i huffed and puffed on this urban hike so i will enjoy my out of town hikes more.

Decided to take a spin around for a short workout hike after work. Wasn't sure what the parking situation would be like but it was fine. But boy do they have that trailhead entrance in full control mode with lines and line boxes and signs. And yes, it was pretty much a constant stream of hikers but maybe not as bad as it could have been.

Made it up the hill faster than I thot I would altho I did have to take a couple pics. As I headed north on the flat I saw a person taking a picture toward a crevice. And then I saw a humungous Chuckwalla as he scampered across the trail. I was able to get a couple pics but not good enough to show his size.

I continued my way up the rest of the hill to the top and then scampered on down taking pictures here and there. Poppies were pretty good on the west side and of course the lupine had already been showing off. I noticed the trail over on the other mountain. It's funny how you see different things on a trail even though I've been on this numerous times. I still think it's the Cadillac of the Scottsdale trails.

I traveled down to the 1.5 mile mark but not before eyeing a female or juvenile chuckwalla that was not bashful at all. It seemed she was eyeing people as they came up the trail. I took some more pictures as I made my way back and the line of hikers were still coming.

Didn't take any video so put together a 6 minute slideshow using Premiere Elements auto slideshow program that I think turned out pretty good: [ youtube video ]

I know, I know I just did this last Friday after doing it once in 2016 and once in 2012... what gives here Tibber? Well I had a hair appt up on Miller and Pinnacle Peak at 5, I get off work at 2:30 and I don't like shopping.

Oh the new development on the corner going to Pinnacle Peak is Executive Suites, not condos. It's still sad to see houses built close together where Pinnacle Patio once was.

Headed up the hill, seemed to go well again. Not stellar on the hellos... it was better on the way back. as I neared the top tier a mother/daughter asked me to take their picture; I reluctantly agreed and they tried to be so gracious but I am not big on taking other peoples pics with their cameras when I'm on a workout hike. I felt a little bad about not being more gracious back.

I noticed there were lots of trail blowouts and immediately thot how Shawn and Wendy could help them with this situation.
Apparently the long divots and other destruction was from Sunday's storm.

Today I went all the way back down to the bottom. Lots of steps to get down and I was wondering if this was such a great idea. Then when I was down I couldn't quite tell what the end of the trail was as it's graded for quite a bit further then where I finally turned. I met another hiker by a sign that I had totally missed ](*,) .

I actually got back up this side faster than I thot I would. I think I finally figured out this "step" thing that I hate so much. Rather than stepping right on the step, if I extend my leg and take a bigger stride, the step isn't as steep... if that makes sense.

On the way down to the dip between the two mountains I ran into two of the trail stewards, one who happened to do a lot of the labor for the trail. I mentioned to him how surprised I was at the water damage. He said he was quite surprised that the one storm could do that much damage as well.

On the way down to the start I passed up a couple climbers, one fellow had quite the wing span.

Route Scout freaked out a little when I got to the VC so not sure what was going on there. Anyway, a good hike and now to go get my hair cut.

my boss mentioned doing this hike last week and I thot it's been awhile since I have so I put it back on my after work hike list as I kind of forgot about it. My last hike here was clear back in March 2016 and Nov 2012 before that, sheesh!
Lots of new construction on the turn toward Pinnacle Peak Park (condos?). The trail itself also has quite a few new things going on too, including a bench and lots of shoring up here and there. It's gotta be one of the best manicured and kept up trails in the valley. Per usual, it gets your heart rate up as you make your way up that east side. It was a bit nippy in the shade too.

There were quite a few people but not as many as would be on a weekend. I handled the up pretty well. Tibber also had a new pair of city-hike shoes (Salomon OUTline). They're very pretty but were a little tight in the middle so I am going to tie them differently to see if that helps. These are replacing my ten year old city-hiking shoes.

On the way back down after turning around at the 1 1/2 mile marker I spoke with another hiker. She was from Cave Creek. We exchanged info on trails as far as good city hikes that have a little elevation. I got behind on the last climb and I also stopped to take two pictures but then caught up with her again on the northeast side and we finished together. She was parked right next to me too.

I took some pictures of the new things I saw since I was last here. It was a beautifully clear day and I could see far into the distance. I still like this hike.

Long story short, this is a one and done hike for us. Gates open at 5am and the hounds are released. This place is very busy. I felt very out of place without a Triple Venti Half Sweet Non-Fat Caramel Macchiato...and a smart phone glued to my ear in the other hand.

I might have been the only guy on the trail and most, if not all the lady hiker/joggers were wearing bikini bottoms and sports bra tops. Mrs. SloFolks apologized to me for wearing too many clothes and I wisely told her that I hadn't noticed the other women.

Not a long hike but it had my nemesis... railroad tie stairs, and lots of them. My right knee does NOT get along with coming down those things. When we started the first downhill section I was as nervous as a Weimaraner in a thunderstorm. We did make it out and back to complete the trail without serious mishap but we won't be back. :D

Hike with JBN for the Junior Ranger Program - great program and lots of fun with him. Hiked to the 1/2 mile marker and came back. Saw one large Chuckwalla.

Absolute circus at the trailhead at 0730 am. Very crowded with Scottsdale Police there with two units sorting out two grown men, one who apparently pushed the other one off the trail somewhere. Big drama at trailhead with a couple shouting at the police. Trail was very busy with weekend hikers battling for space with trail runners.

Parking lot was full so had to park on the side of N 102nd Way, all the way around the curve.

Would NEVER go to this trail again on a weekend no matter what time!

7:30 AM start with temp at 76*. Hiked it for time without a full out push. Did not have to stop to keep my HR under 140. Felt GOOD! Best time in over 2 years :y:. Why??....combination of reduction in alcohol, no beef, pork, chicken, 15 lb weight loss and second knee replacement in Dec 2017.

It’s been a little over a year since I’ve done this hike. Did it for time today so I could evaluate my fitness level since December knee replacement. The time was in the range of prior hikes.
