Our second canyon of the weekend was definitely the highlight. You just can’t go wrong with Christopher Creek!

Carl and Doug managed to jump the full canyon. Tim and Jessica only rappelled once - they were checking depths . Stacie and I rappelled 3 times but short changed the rope to get a little thrill. We also jumped a few of the smaller jumps. The guys and Jessica were even finding taller things to jump on the sides of pools !

Note to self: wear the 5 mm even if others decide to not bring a wetsuit. It’s nice being warm!

Had a fun time working my way down Christopher Creek. Lots of swimming, a couple of jumps, and four rappels. I haven't been on rope for a long time. Water was markedly colder in the pool below the 3rd rappel. Got a bit cold, but never too bad and sun was usually not far away to warm up in.

Parked at the campground's day-use parking and moseyed downstream towards the Box ... a hike I've enjoyed many times over the past 20-some years.
Not only have I never seen it so dry, I never imagined it ever getting this dry! :(
Small flow through the campground ends soon after, and only two decent looking pools hanging on below there to the boy scout camp.
Another unhappy surprise - since when is the entire creekbed fenced off at the boy scout camp, disallowing the trail through that has been used for decades?! Actually I thought there was a law that waterways were public and had to allow passage, or something like that? I'm going to inquire with the Ranger district.
So ... didn't get down to Box.
Enjoyed a nice long sit above a big pool on the way back. I watched two trout, a crayfish, and some sort of sucker fish go about their business. It was nice.
It got real birdy back near the campground, so I decided to come back after grabbing my camera from the car - got some pretty good pics here.
I startled an elk (it was mutual) from about 30 yards away - sadly, I am so unaccustomed to seeing elk these days, that my surprised brain attached the word "horse" first to the large brown animal in front of me!
Fine start to the trip, despite the parched land.

I’ve been wanting to revisit this place and after borrowing Pancho Doll’s book from the Pine Library it gave me new motivation to make it happen!

I made it out of the canyon okay but my tripod did not share the same luck...
I was photographing a waterfall from a shelf above when the bottom half of my tripod broke and fell to the dark depths directly under the falls.

I made seven valiant attempts to retrieve it diving under the falls reaching in every crack and crevice all while my skull was being pounded by hundreds of gallons of water.

As I was climbing out of the gorge at sunset soaking wet with ringing ears I just looked down to where was and laughed and smiled at the whole situation.

After playing around in Woods Canyon I needed a little bit more of an outdoor fix so decided to check on an old favorite before heading home.
I won't lie I was lazy and parked at the "illegal cheater spot" on the side of the highway, every other time I park at the old dirt lot and walk but I was feeling privileged.

Nobody at the gorge but my dog and I enjoyed the waterfalls to ourselves until sundown.
Next summer I will finally properly descend the full length of the canyon that has long been on my list but always had an issue with monsoons or something else coming up.

Originally was going to head back to the AG but it was flooded to the extreme with no safe access and would have been lethal to walk in the creek bed like the evening before.

So my next plan was catching "The Boogeyman" flowing in Spring Creek which I encountered firsthand on a descent to Tonto Creek last summer and also of course saw in the "Hucking Huge" films.

Payson received the torrential rainfall that day but all the drainages and side canyons around the rim were surprisingly just a mere trickle.

So again plans changed and I was always curious about a different route to get inside CC Gorge.
I carefully made my way deeper and deeper into the gorge with a few down climbs, major bushwhacking and a lot of determination to see some waterfalls.

Made it down to a rock peninsula that rose about 40ft above the raging silty creek with the power of a river as it roared and thundered down the narrow canyon.
Captured a couple shots I was very pleased with and made it out of the gorge before nightfall and topped off the night with a Pub House Butter Burger from Culver's!

After our big day on Saturday we were happy to have a late morning. We headed up North to Pumpkin Center for lunch at Pumkin Center Bar! Get the Green Chili burrito! The drive there was beautiful in sections and interesting in other sections. Lots of mining history.

After lunch we continued on to Payson and then Christopher Creek.

Chris Creek is a natural water park. When we got there the drop in point was littered with children and their families. Ugh! But soon we left the crowds behind. It was nice getting a late start as we didn't have to share the canyon with any other Canyoneers.

Airkewled did a couple of the ballsy jumps from our previous trip. We did a couple rappels from different anchors as other parties had changed them. I felt more confident since its been almost a half year since my shoulder surgery.

The canyon was cold as before so I was happy to have a wetsuit (note to self - take the 5 mm next time!).

Everyone had a blast! We even managed to get on the proper route out!

After our short adventure, most of us headed up to West Clear Creek where I made venison and green chili pizza!

Best way to describe yesterday would be that I had an off day! :oplz:
Should have went with my initial planned route and gut instinct of starting the hike from Spring Creek and the proceeding upstream to the gorge.
I still had a great day but the fact that I did not feel satisfied in terms of what I really wanted to see and photograph is I guess what's bugging me.

Nonetheless my friend Daniela and I had a nice afternoon guzzling beers and soaking up the sun while splashing around the many pools inside the gorge. I've always avoided this place beacause of its popularity but yesterday we had it all to ourselves besides the group we ran into while we were exiting the canyon.

We debated proceeding downstream and returning to the vehicle that way since my main goal was to see and photograph the 35' foot waterfall but my indecisiveness and unfamiliarity with the canyon came to the conclusion of heading out the easy way. As Arnold said "I'll
be back!" I have some unfinished business at the CC Gorge!

Christopher Creek is an amazing water park!!! We did a few rappels into pools. The water was the perfect temp to be wearing a 5 mm wetsuit. airkewled did a few bad-pumpkin jumps and slides into the water. My shoulder was kinda tired from doing 3 other adventures so I decided I'd play it safe. Next time I'm going to try some of the jumps! There were a lot more people then we had seen in days, but it didn't bother me because I had been expecting even more!

https://youtube.com ... 2cVk

On the way to Christopher Creek we had noticed a lot of holiday traffic heading thru Payson. So after our adventure we decided to drive through Young, AZ. We ended up being rerouted and had to take FS 609 down to Pumpkin Center. But it was meant to be because we found some great food at Pumkin Center Bar!!! Now to start planning an adventure that ends there - accepting ideas :)

An absolute gem, this one. I am bummed we hadn't been here sooner as this area rocks! We had a super fun frolic through the pools and waterfalls of this beautiful canyon. Some slides, jumps and waterfall rappels mixed with rappelling "aussie" style (facing forwards) and playing with simul-raps (2 people at once) equaled a ton of fun with a great group. Plus the approach and exit were both pretty nice and easy... :y:

I lugged the wetsuit along for no reason as I never ended up putting it on, the water was perfect. We had a sunny warm day for most of our way through but the clouds started rolling in towards the end and it got a bit cold, especially when the wind kicked up. My technique for warming up was to hug some big warm rocks... laugh as you may, it totally works. :D

Also saw some climbing routes on the exit which look pretty sweet!

Took Saturday off from Canyons, but then on Sunday a few people picked this one and invited me to go...I really liked this one the first time I did it a couple of years ago, even though this is the Canyon that I took my "Tumble" on...I was determined to do it right this time...

Although I wasn't the most Experienced Canyoneer on this Trip, I was the only one that had done this one before, so I led the Approach and Exit. We Exited in a slightly different Spot than I did before, but I knew this way was doable and with some Route Finding Help from another HAZer in the Group, we popped out on top perfectly... :)

The Trip went very well, although since I did it earlier this Year, the Water was a lot colder... Although we left Camp to completely Blue Skies and No Clouds, by the time we dropped in the Canyon, the Sun was gone behind quite a few Clouds...We only briefly saw the Sun once the rest of the Day and by the time we were Exiting, it was actually threatening to Rain on us...We all had Full Wetsuits on or we would have been very Cold on this Day...

We only had one Snafu on the actual Canyon Trip and that was when we were Hiking up the Slope on the Exit. The other Gal that was with us stepped on a loose rock, lost her Balance and fell into a Prickly Pear... :o :sk: Luckily, she had a Long-sleeved Fleece on and that saved her somewhat, although it was going to be quite the Project when she got home...We took a Time-Out for about 20 Minutes and de-spined her...Amazingly, with Tweezers and Duct Tape, we got it all out of her Right Arm...Her Shirt and Pack took the Brunt of it luckily...

We got back to the Vehicles and decided to have a late Lunch of Mexican Food in Payson before going our Separate Ways...After Lunch, 1 other Vehicle was heading back South on the Beeline. One of the Guys had dropped his Vehicle off at Jake's Corner on the way up, so he was riding with the Fellow HAZer...I left just a few minutes before them and hadn't gotten 3 Miles out of Payson when I got to a DPS Roadblock...They had shut down the Southbound Beeline for some reason and were turning everyone around... :sk: I knew I could still get home, but the other Guys were pretty much going to have to wait it out, since they had the other Vehicle to pick up. I ended up going home through Camp Verde so instead of a 1 Hour Drive, it turned into almost 3 Hours...

But, I was home and totally ecstatic with how the Day and the long Weekend went...Good Times, Great Canyons and Awesome People...And the Canyoneering Addiction Continues... :D

I will be adding a Note to this Description as there was a small Change in the Parking for this Trip....

With all the scrambling, climbing and swimming required I don't mind labeling this a canyoneering trip. A big thanks to my companions for helping me through the difficult parts. I'm amazed at the teens I saw hopping through here barefoot.

Day trip to the gorge. First time, and surprised of a couple groups who had ascended the entire canyon sans-gear. I wandered as far as I could before hitting a waterfall with no sane way to descend without a rope. Far less water than any photoset here, and the water was silty. Still a nice daytrip.
