I got out earlish to do a sunrise hike. With no headlamp I take the dirt road figuring I would spot a snake easier. I’ve been enjoying taking the wash back though. It was a nice morning out!

Nice evening hike with my son. From the parking lot, we went west on West Loop, then up Ridgeline and Mormon Loop. Down Hidden Valley and National. Not many people out. Cool temps, but no breeze. Nice sunset when we started.

The amount of daylight is shrinking fast. Still pretty dark at 6:30 am.
Took the Ridgeline to Mormon Loop, to Hidden Valley, down National, up and over Guadalupe Ridge, down and up San Gabriel.
Hadn't seen the new part of San Gabriel yet. Interesting Phoenix would build new trail here as San Gabriel is not a officially designated trail.
A coyote passed in front of me early on. Cold the first hour or so. Busy at the trailhead when I finished, parking full.
Not much haze anymore which is nice. Good hike. :)

Met up with Brian at the Pima Canyon trailhead and headed out on West Loop. As we headed west, there are some new sign posts for a trail called Beacon Hill. Not sure what that was all about, will have to figure out the route for this new one sometime soon. Eventually, Beacon Hill ran into Pima Wash, which was south of where I wanted to be. Anyway, we got over to Ridgeline and headed west, then up Mormon Loop. Went into Hidden Valley at Fat Mans Pass, then down National back to the road and trailhead.

Great temps, not much breeze. Nice sunset and moonrise. Lots of mountain bikers and a few hikers. I’m glad my schedule is finally getting back to normal to start doing more night hikes again.

Started up the Ridgeline at Beverly Canyon. Took it to Mormon Loop, up Two Peaks, through Hidden Valley east to west and back. Quite a few people out early. Came across a fearless pocket mouse digging on the side of the trail. Ignored me from a foot away. :)

Got going at o'dark thirty to avoid people and heat. Started up the Ridgeline at Beverly Canyon. Took it to Mormon Loop, up Two Peaks, through Hidden Valley (east to west) and back.
Saw two great horned owls, heard two others but didn't spot them. Saw a couple geckos before it got light. Heard two coyote packs, saw the usual night hawks on the upper part of Mormon Loop, and spotted some cottontails, quail...
Nice to get done early. :)

Headed up Marcos De Niza then up Guadalupe Ridge before dropping down to National where it begins at the end of the road. Up Mormon Loop then down Hidden Valley and National. Lots of people out tonight. No wildlife besides owls. Nice temps, and plenty of moonlight.

Needed headlamps almost right from the start. Headed up Marcos De Niza. Stephanie asked if we were going to take Guadalupe Ridge all the way to Hidden Valley, I said not tonight because I thought it would be too snakey. Sure enough, right where Marcos meets Beverly Canyon, there was a rattler waiting for us in the rocks.

Did the Hidden Valley loop as the temps cooled off nicely. The highlight of the evening was just before the tunnel. Stephanie commented that she had never noticed some of the holes in the rocks before, and stepped closer to take a look. Just as she was nearing the rock, a small bird flew out straight at her face. The timing could not have been better, and I only wish I had caught it on video. She said this is the second time a bird has tried to kill her on a hike. I think it’s been more than that and she just blocked out some of the memories.

Nice evening. Saw no other hikers and four mountain bikers.
