Nice, easy after work hike. Got on the trail around 4:30. Quite a bit of construction going on in the area so I had to walk a little bit to get to the TH. Trail is easy to follow and it is short climb to reach the top and the (limited) payoff of the views that come with it. To me, it has the same flavor as the Irregular Link and Voaz tTrails. The elevation change is decent, but gradual and the nearby rock work is picturesque. Plus, there is some obvious history (relatively recent) history that comes with this trail as is evident from the wooden railings halfway through the hike as well as the horse railing at the top of the peak. Makes me wonder what it was like hiking this trail in the 70's and what the surrounding views would have looked like back then. Changed it up a little on the way down and took the back trail that went down the south side of the peak. I had done this years ago and it seems more fluid than I remember it. Seems like it sees a lot of activity. Lot of switchbacking as it descends and it eventually wrapped around and tied back into the street that enters the park.

With upper 90 degree temps under a week away figured best enjoy the freak cool day. Before global cooling the latest poppies survived around the central valley was April 15th. Still a couple on Mojave and a smattering on Ruth. Lots of dogs out on the trails. Just one leashed cat. Somebody hung a teddy bear in a tree. It's in good condition so I'd guess lost or symbolic. Windy on the summit. The exciting annual gnats may have arrived. Not sure. Some micro-sized narrow fly landed often despite the wind on a break. Eradicated a serious shellacked rock disease near Dreamy.

Still moderate wildflowers. The feel is light as the green background hue has dried brown. Everything will dry up by next weekend based on the forecast.

Good, short, Sunday hike near Piestawa/Squaw Peak! I said near, not on actual summit trail  . I found an alternative ridgeline to walk, from Ruth Hamilton to Mohave, and made a loop out of it. Thanks BlackToes for the track! It was a good up and down climb with some different views. Construction on the Mohave Parking area is coming along nicely as they continue working their way through the park making improvements. Great day! :)

Did a short, early, beat the heat, in-town hike this weekend. One of my favorite loops in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. Most of the harem hadn't been on this loop before, so it was quite the treat. Ambulance was taking someone out when we got there at 5:20. Parking lots are under construction, cars parked everywhere along the entrance road. Trail stewards were doing maintenance on the east side trails. Humidity was up, we were soaked. Post hike treats at Snooze were excellent!

Quick Saturday morning hike to get some exercise. Combined the Quartz Ridge, Mohave Connector, and Mohave Trails to make a loop. I like the little summit up there, not nearly as crowded as Squaw Peak. You can view all the people from here going up and down the summit trail. I dropped down to Mohave Trail #200A and up it's ridge to get a better look at the construction on the parking lots; coming along good! Then, I finished up my hike down Trail 202 Connector past the McMansions and tennis courts. Beautiful part of the trail that doesn't see as many people, but I like it. Even more beautiful in afternoon or evenings. Good alternative to the Hubbub over at Piestawa Summit Trail! :D

Aside from the summit the grade is moderate. This loop hits all my favorites. Which includes the summit, west & north circ, #1C, #1B & Ruth out to Quartz and back to Mohave.

The 1.3 mi alternative (#1C-#1A-#1B) vs the standard circ is the highlight of the park. Everything is green but VOAZ #1B is borderline tropical now.

Prob time to check out the billion other trails in the other valley parks & preserves. Yeah we'll see.

Headed in earlier than usual for the summit. A few Fridays ago I switched from a standard neon to a black shirt by chance. Passing remarks rolled in from folks that never acknowledge me. Back to neon today to appease the hecklers... lol

Nice temps so I decided to go check out Ruth for a change. The guide for [ Mohave - Ruth Hamilton Loop ] is spot on but I really enjoyed the clockwise version more than anticipated. Just one hiker on Ruth, a doz on Quartz &
five on the Mohaves. More small town friendly vs that horrible summit trail. Always say I need to hit this more. Rarely do but have a feeling I might walk the talk. Everything is green.

While VOAZ is my fav, there are several stretches on this loop where you are surrounded by mountains with no hint of city. Of course then you walk beside a neighborhood and give back all the serenity... lol

One nice Wild Geranium or similar. Kicking myself for not taking a photo as none have been posted in the Valley.

Company (Mom) visiting from out of town. Did this short hike with her. She's not a hiker, but felt good with the accomplishment. Joked with her that we were going to work on completing the 7 Summit Challenge. She has already done Piestewa and Ranger Trails. On her next visit we might shoot for Lookout Summit :) . Temps were nice ...in the 80's. Only saw about 7 people on out trail, but the park was busy. We had to park at near the bathrooms and hike up to Mohave, hence the extra mileage.

As it looked more and more promising that magic sky water would actually fall, I decided I wanted to be outside to enjoy what would apparently amount to mostly just a 1-2 hour frontal passage. It seemed to be lingering out in western AZ, so I decided to wait a while for a late start in hopes of catching the rain.

We were still mostly early. The night was great anyway. Low clouds and city lights eliminated the need for headlamps. It was 75 degrees at 8pm on January 10. There was a very nice breeze.

As hoped however, the front finally arrived with fierce winds, a couple of too-close-for-comfort lightning strikes, driving rain, running water, puddles, and all around good times. Managed to get back to the parking lot after wading through a few shallow rivers and captured the requisite selfie. Somehow the parking lots were totally empty.

I will never understand why people here bitch about the lack of rain all the time and yet don't take advantage of it when it actually happens.

There was finally some rain in the forecast that was coming into the valley around 8-9pm. So Chumley and I met over by Squaw Peak and decided to make the Circ Loop and extended it around to the Quartz Trail. The first 5+ miles were dry but we could see rain off to the west. It slowly worked its way over to us and started raining as we hiked back on the Mohave Connector Trail. The skies opened and a solid rain fell. Flashes of lightning illuminated the area which was really cool and not scary. We completed the loop and were soaked even with rain gear. Felt great hiking in the rain again!

Something light for the afternoon. The air seems very brown and dirty for this time of year.

I didn't go to the official end, and instead went up the ridge to the high point overlooking the south. Extreme humidity all day with a miserable overcast gave me a tremendous sinus headache so I didn't go out until almost sunset. A wasted day from monsoon season. At least I did something outside.

Crowds on Squaw were getting to me. Figured I needed some space for an attitude adjustment. Hiked the inner Mohave Loop ccw utilizing the road. Perfect spring weather.

Only a few poppies stand after the great spring wildflower show of 2017. Large swaths of dry fiddleneck. Notable monster sized scorpion weed was the most interesting specimen.

I couldn't help but notice all the poppies on the hill so I hit this after Squaw Peak. Nearly all in the initial quarter mile. The entire area is very green throughout. Several non career hikers out and about! One group had four small dogs that were having fun. I often see coyotes on this trail, none today.

Poppies blanket a tenth of a mile swath near the beginning of the hike. Perfect for anyone looking for a short hike through wildflowers. A few sprigs of lupine and itsy bitsy varieties most will overlook. Fiddleneck is heavy down along the road in and near the main restrooms. One daisy atop 1788.

Pulled in to the 32nd street TH about 430 for an afternoon jaunt. I put this loop together a bit on the fly to add up a few trails in the Preserve I had not been on before. My GPS track left off a little chunk for some reason, so I adjusted the stats a bit. I took the 8A to the 8B, and then up the Mohave Ridgeline. I was expecting all off trail for this bit, but there was a use trail for a very good portion of this. Great little ridgeline, packs a lot of punch for such a short trail. I connected up with the Mohave trail and up, and then circled back around the 202 connector. The rain started just as I had gotten on the return leg, and it became a downpour very shortly thereafter. Got out my rain jacket to keep my pack dry, by the time I made it back to the truck there was a good 2-3" of flowing water on the trail. Good stuff! Too bad the rain did not make it up to my house, but it was certainly nice to be out in it, even if my boots are soaked through for a few days.

MJ wanted a short hike with good elevation. So we hiked up to the Mohave's high point and back to the saddle, then headed down on the #202 Connector, which I call the Low Connector, returning through the little peaks on the east (the High Connector). Although Piestewa Peak was humming on the other side of Squaw Peak Dr, we ran into almost no one. Most of the Palo Verdes were still in bloom as were several Sagaros.

Great afternoon hike. This loop always good for cardio and decent AEG. Did this route cw leaving from half-filled 32nd St parking lot. Took the high connector to the Mohave Tr and saw no one in that 9/10 mi. Walked up on pavement on Squaw Pk Drive to the deadend TH, then up the rugged and lonely Ruth Hamilton where I had a sandwich at the Davis bench. Windy up there. Had to tighten up my hat. Lots of buzzing bees working the still-blooming Palo Verde. Traffic coming up on the #8A was bumper to bumper as I was descending from the Kolbe bench to 32nd St. The small parking lot was full when I reached it at 1820. The idea is to get there beore 4:30 if you want a space.

This is my 3rd favorite hike in the preserves after the Summit Trail & VOAZ. I cleaned up my 11 year old description and renamed it so you don't need a degree in trailology. Still more people out than anticipated as the mercury rises. Which is nice as it's really in its prime with the Palo Verdes in full yellow buzz bloom.
