Nice desert hike. We hiked on a Thursday and saw only about a half dozen other hikers on the trail. The trail is easy to follow and as others have described is an easy hike for the first mile. The second mile from the 4WD trailhead to the saddle is more difficult due to the trail being steep, having a lot of loose rocks and limited use of switchbacks. We were satisfied with reaching the saddle and didn’t attempt the more technical climb to the summit.

3H - Group
Great hike today with my friends at 3H. I had never hiked this mountain, but was always curious about it.
The cactus were out in full force and more than one person got stuck with needles today. I really like the views from the top as well as the climbing past the saddle. I tried to find the alternate way down and got stuck a couple of times, but made it ok. I want to check out the Southern tip of the mountain next time, as there's some cool crags to climb and little arches to check out.
Fun day!

Gallydoll
Second trip to Vulture Peak. Started at the main trailhead with harem members Gallydoll, Carey, and Curt. A section of trail was rerouted from the official track. Made great time heading up. Had a nice relaxing visit on the top. First team up for the day, one fellow joined and headed back down before us. Passed a group of 11 from Prescott, the Health Hikers, on our way back down. Stopped at the Horseshoe in Wickenburg for breakfast/lunch afterwards.

At first I took the wrong way and wasn't sure where the trail was so I went back to the parking lot and found the trailhead. I suppose I should have actually read the decription. Once I found the trail I discovered it was very easy to run besides the washes which had deep sand that made your feet sink into it. When I got near the top a family was close to the saddle and I talked to them for a second then I went up the summit of Vulture Peak. Wow that climb is scary as can be. One of the sons from the family I met wizzed past me climbing up the mountain but hurt his hand so he had to turn back. The views at the top were amazing it was a very clear day and you could see for miles and miles. I was amazed when the younger son from the family I met climbed to the summit (I would say he was 11 maybe 12). I guess he wanted to show up his older brother or something. It was much scarier going down, the kid and I went down at the same time so I couldn't be more scared than the kid (although I probably was). When I got down from the scramble I talked for a minute again with the family and I jogged just about the whole way back to the car.

I did this one a few years ago with the slim version of Denny. The Denny I hiked with today talked a lot more and I didn't have to carry him. He did try to spoon hike me a couple times that was scary. It was nice to hike with Tourtoise who was todays tour guide. It was on the hot side but not brutally so.

This was such a cool hike. It's not a very long one but you get a 360 degree view of Wickenburg and the surrounding mountains. I found it was pretty easy to get to, there is a parking lot right off of Vulture Mine Rd, it's well marked. The first mile and a half are pretty flat. Lots of nice scenery around there. When you come to the base of the mountain, it begins to get steep. There's a few switchbacks and then you finally come to the saddle. Great views here too. At this point, the peak is only an intimidating climb that is almost straight up, but I found it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be coming down. The views from the top are pretty cool. It's a quick stroll back to the parking lot on the way down. I would do this hike again for sure, even though it's a bit of a drive. Took me about an hour and 15 minutes from old town Scottsdale.

Second hike of the day. I've always liked Vulture Peak, but it's hard to justify driving all the way to hike four miles. It's a great add-on to another hike in the area, or as a side trip on the drive to Vegas. There are a lot of use trails in the first 1/3 mile or so, but they all eventually lead to the main trail. We passed a few people on the way up, and they all seemed to turn around at the saddle. The climb up the chute is fun, and easier than it looks. We sat at the summit for a few minutes, then headed back down. Easy walk back down to the car, and a nice way to finish off the day.

This was our second peak of the day.

Short but very sweet! The short chute up to the summit from the saddle was my favorite part. The register is actually sealed to the top of the mountain by concrete, which I thought was interesting... Inside everything was wet and soggy as the lid doesn't properly close on top anymore.

Great picks Linda!

Seen this peak driving home from Prescott via 89 to 93 to 60 a few times. Didn't even know if it was open to hiking.

Bored of all the hikes around Phoenix and having hiked at the Superstitions yesterday I decided to take a drive out to see if this peak had any hiking trails etc.

Took 60 from Phoenix and using google maps determined Vulture Peak Road would get me the closest to the peak. I didn't actually know the name of it at that point.

Actually found it fairly easily and also quickly discovered that it had hiking trails. The wife and I threw on our packs and hiked to the top. Only took us about 1 to get to the top and that was after taking about 2-3 minutes to figure out which way the trail went when we entered the second wash. I really enjoyed this hike. I would recommend this hike for dogs, but wouldn't feel comfortable taking mine past the saddle. Its only 5 minutes of scrambling to reach the top from the saddle.

A very nice family on the top offered me a beer.

Helped my Buddy Brian move some things out of his parents home in Sun City West. Afterwards we hit good ol' Vulture Peak. Long drive from my house but it is always a fun one.

Due to nursing a hangover all day and cancelling my original trip plans I decided to finally get up and out of the house and make the quick drive to Vulture Peak. This has been in my list for awhile and what better way to sweat out some leftover booze from the night before than a short steep hike! I didn't even make to the TH until 6:30 so I started my hike off with a beautiful sunset behind me to the west and just as made it to the off trail short scramble just below the peaks summit I relaized my headlamp was very low on batteries! After that realization I debated wether to push forward knowing my descent would be in the black of the night but I proceeded to push forward. The views were awesome! I honestly want to camp up there (not sure if it's allowed) one of these days and then head to work the following day! The scramble down was a little sketchy but luckily I had my trusty iPhone light to guide me down otherwise I would have been SOL! Only a 45 min drive from my house in Surprise so I will have to return for a proper sunrise hike or something like that in the future!

I've had Vulture Peak on the list for quite a while; finally bagged it. Parked in the 1st lot of the road to add a little mileage. It was a perfect mid70's, cloudless, sunny day with an easy breeze.
A steep & fun little trail that gets even better at the saddle. From there it's a great scramble up a chimney chute to the peak. Flawless views from the top! Look for the Geodetic markers up there.

Cool to be back after almost 3 years. Cold and blustery the majority of the time. Had a great view of the clouds sweeping over the peak on the way back to the car.

Vulture Peak

It’s the start of the hiking season for us and we’re overweight and out of shape so we picked something easy with a dash of AEG, Vulture Peak outside of Wickenburg. Got three youngsters (hardly over 75) to come with me. Some of us used to hike this back when we were younger and remember the slippery finale of this hike which is now an undignified 220 foot of what seems like vertical rock scramble and fortunately, at least today, not that slippery. I knew we were climbing high but I was still surprised to find three people from Switzerland up top when we got there. Didn’t realize that we’d climbed that high!
