Headed up See Canyon Trail with a side trip to See Spring. Lower half of See Canyon is in good shape, upper half is in rough shape, and very steep. Some poison ivy around the halfway to two-thirds point. Once at the top, took a combo of Gen Crook, Carr Lake, and the road through the campground over to the top of Drew, stopping about midway for a snack break. Down Drew, which is in mostly good shape. Then took Highline back west to finish out the loop. Only saw two other hikers all day. Heard some turkeys, but no other wildlife. Good temps most of the way, along with a nice breeze. Very dry, but the area did get some light rain yesterday.

Nice cool start to the day, good trail conditions on the See Spring Trail mini detour, nice to see and hear running water, met 2 backpackers which were the only 2 humans we saw on the trails today, light water flow in Christopher Creek made crossing easy. Was really really hoping to see a bear today especially after being teased about carrying bear spray, well turns out they were deterred so well they stayed out of sight  Also received grief about bringing 3 hiking poles . Before the steeper portion of See trail nature is trying to reclaim it , ferns and locust are overgrown, had a couple of scratches to show for it. Upper portion of See is quite a workout, if you thought a 15 mile and 6k aeg hike already this week would slow down the energizer bunny you would be wrong but putting me in the lead did :D , I almost had a mishap with some deadfall along here too but only resulting in shoulder pain rest of the hike that’s better today . Nice views with a snack break on the rim edge before reaching the campground, while in that area @LindaAnn pointed out an odd thinning procedure the FS is using, cutting down the healthy trees and leaving the dead ones :? After the break I tried to get a head start by asking her to count tree rings on one of the recently cut trees but it didn’t stump her, good thing as I realized I didn’t know the route. Drew was for me the ideal trail to descend on plus shade and a breeze for a bonus, Highline was in good shape but there were portions unshaded and it was getting warm near the end. New loop for me and a great hike made better by marvelous company!

I took 2 hikes from See Canyon TH. Foliage in the parking lot area is good but still pre peak. First hike went east on Highline. The first wash crossing after 15 minutes was still green. After 25 more minutes, you cross the second wash and enter the bottom of what should be call Foliage Canyon. The bottom was pre but with color, midway up had tons of color but still pre. Almost at the end of the maple / oak section of the canyon was full on Peak, and when you cross the next wash, the leaves were all brown and past peak. If one can find the old trail (hidden by FS with logs etc) it stays in the canyon bottom following the wash and color is EXTREME. I will upload a route for the old trail. Otherwise, as you go up the canyon, about 100' before the first switch back, look for a trail covered with logs that heads down to the wash. That is the old original trail and follows the wash up and rejoins the trail further up. I also did See Canyon Trail, except for a nice group of maples 2 minutes from the Highline Intersection and then again right after crossing the See Spring creek, there is little color and all very pre... Pics to follow...

I felt like having lunch on the Rim. So I did. :)

The weather was perfect. A nice breeze kept things pleasant, though I never felt warm. And why would I with a nice canopy of trees dominated by ponderosa pine providing shade for most of the hike. Puffy clouds dotted a beautiful blue sky.

The trails, especially Drew, are better than I remember. A nice steady ascent on Highline keeps the heart rate up. Drew takes it up another notch.

Once at the top, I took a left on the forest road and followed it for a bit before taking another left, then angled between a couple of campsites to get to my lunch spot.

A couple of bees liked my lunch as much as I did so I left a little of the object of their desire on the rock outcrop where I was sitting and moved away a few feet. That worked.

Most enjoyable lunch. I didn’t notice any smoke, though it was hazy to the south. I headed back down after about 20 minutes.

I passed four mountain bikers as I was heading up, but the only hikers I saw were at the trailhead, none on the trails.

Great day to be on the Rim.

Break in the hot weather, so we made a quick run up to Payson. Saw the Alternate Route posted by JuanJaimeii (10.82 miles) and decided to go for it. It combines the Drew from See Canyon TH (3.6 miles) along with a walk on the rim (4.0 miles) followed by See Spring Trail #185 (3.5 miles)

The Drew trail is less traveled and a bit overgrown, but markers on the trees and the worn trail made for pretty easy following 2/5?.

Hike on the Rim was straight forward also, started with trail again following the tree markers. Eventually this gets on a road with various campsites for a while before intersecting with the Drew hike.

The Drew hike is well defined, and has a couple more nice scenic views.

Started at about 4:45 and finished up at about 9:30. Great morning hike!

When I was at Brown's Peak last weekend one of the girls had asked me if I had done See Canyon. I told her I had done it a few times and that I enjoyed doing it as a loop with Drew. Anyway that planted the seed for me to go do it today. It was a little warm up there but overall very nice and the temps seemed to hover around the mid to high 80's. There were some wild strawberries on the See Canyon trail that were mighty tasty. Up top along the rim I saw several folks camping. Then as I started down the Drew I saw three large elk. Views from Drew Canyon are always impressive but See is my favorite of the two. Just a good solid hike all the way around.

Started a little after 0730 to nice cool temps. Headed east from the See Canyon trailhead, crossed Christopher Creek, then picked up Highline on the other side of the creek. East on Highline, which is fairly easy hiking, gradual ups and downs, reaching Drew at the 2.50 mile mark. Turned left and headed up Drew. Despite the elevation gain on Drew, I always find it to be pleasant, with a steady incline. At the top, we headed west on FR9350. Passed one abandoned campsite with a still smoldering fire. After mostly taking care of that, we continued west, eventually turning onto Gen Crook trail. At FR208, we took that north for two miles, then down to Bear Canyon Lake, where we had lunch. Back south on 208, then west to the top of See Canyon. Steep descent down See, with many downed trees to get around/over/under—hopefully those will be cleared soon. The last mile or two on See gradually leveled out and made for a pleasant finish to the loop. Nice temps all day, a little warm at times, but the breeze helped.

Wavered on options until late last night. This seemed to be a good compromise plan. I'd never taken Drew all the way to the actual Crook instead of cutting through the campground. That part of Crook is really pleasant and a much better option. Ran into a pair surveying the trail to submit it for historic trail status. Did you know the "V" markers don't stand for Verde? They are the roman number 5. Because General Crook led the 5th division or regiment, or whatever it's called. Hiking is educational!

john and i drove up to camp saturday night near see canyon trailhead
after dinner at the thai restaurant in payson, found a campsite and we both tested out some new gear
nice night with good star viewing and low temps in the 60s - very pleasant
coffee and breakfast while packing up
got going around 0630 up see canyon, with a detour to see spring
i had downloaded two of @dixieflyer's routes, one an out n back to bear canyon lake, and the other for the see canyon - drew loop
we got to the lake and had a snack
had previously kayaked and hiked here with my friend from nebraska, and wanted to see the south access
a scenic destination and a nice spot for a break
went back to rim road and decided to finish the hike with the drew loop option
should have been about 16 miles total, and would have been had i switched routes i was following
took a combination of general crook trail, some logging roads and aspen trail over to carr trailhead, overshooting drew trail and adding probably two miles to the hike
there are several tracks posted showing a much more efficient way to the drew trailhead
on the plus side, aspen trail is very pretty
we also saw about 20 elk crossing in front of us on one of the logging roads
backtracked and headed down drew, which offers some nice views
returned on highline - this section was new to me
a nice combo, which could certainly be done better
we had lunch at the thai place again on the way home
fun weekend! thanks for the camping idea, john and sorry about that extra couple miles
think i owe you a beer for that

Nice hike up to the rim and Bear Canyon Lake from See Canyon with Kelly. Strawberries are at peak on The See Canyon Trail. The lake is very scenic. Not at all crowded for a June weekend. Aspen Trail is pretty.
The Hike down Drew and along the Highline back to the car was shorter than expected which is always a pleasant surprise at the end of a solid hike. It got warm the last third of the hike but never uncomfortable. Saw a herd of about 20 elk.
Good times. Thanks Kelly! :)

Two days with boyfriend around Payson/Heber/Overguard for combination of duck hunting, fishing, and red maple hunting. Successful in 2 of 3 of those plans. Stayed in a little cabin Christopher Creek instead of usual camping. Bird dog Ranger dun good retrieving three blue wing teal ducks. Early in that season. Saw a tarantula crossing road, stopped at a bunch of abandoned cabins, and on Highline Trail spent a while chasing/catching/photographing a rare alligator lizard. Boyfriend is a freelance photographer and writer for nature magazines - so he was all in getting good close up pics of the lizard. I got my red maple fix slightly off trail - 10 to 14 days before peak here. Overall these two days hit all my spots just right. #HappyFallYall

The condition was awesome. You could tell it was recently used by horses. Had to turn back at the 3 mile marker as it was starting to thunderstorm / rain. Lots of photo ops as you walk.

Got the idea to do this one from Linda and The N's recent trip to the area. I went Clockwise and headed up See Canyon first. This Canyon is one of my favorites in Arizona. It always seems so green and lush. Once up top I took the General Crook Trail over to the Drew Trail and finished up on the Highline.

It was a little warm this afternoon but certainly better than the heat hear in Phoenix.

Quick hike to escape the heat, with a minimum of driving from Phoenix. Got started a little after 7:00, and headed east on Highline over to Drew. The shaded sections on Drew felt fine, but the sunny sections were on the warm side--getting to the top was a relief. The walk along the top went quickly, spotted a bear sauntering through the trees, but it disappeared before I was able to get any pics. After that, I took an early lunch break, then headed down See Canyon. Other than at the campground at the top, I did not see any other people until the last part of See. Smoke from the Highline Fire was light first thing in the morning, then disappeared by about 8:00.

First time on this loop for the year. Temps were pleasant in the a.m. but warmed up nicely as the morning progressed. We saw cattle grazing along the Highline, first time I'd ever seen them this far east. The climb up Drew was nice, in the shade. We watched as the morning smoke dispersed. About a mile west of FR9350, we were exchanging bear stories when we noticed a bear off trail to our south. Kind of cool to watch it slowly disappear. Everything up top is really dry. See Canyon was the opposite, very green and lush. Shade and downhill made this a pleasant stroll. The See Canyon TH was busy but we had the trails to ourselves today. Great day in Rim Country.

A decent, strenuous hike. Me, my wife, and 2 dogs really enjoyed it. We went counter-clockwise, by Highline Trail, up Drew Trail, Across General Crook Trail, and then down See Canyon Trail. To go clockwise probably would have been a better workout. Anyway, great hike. Our goal was to wear the dogs out so that they don't tear pumpkin up when we get home. That goal was met. ;)

Second time on this loop. It was great being above the rim before the roads open. See Canyon needs some major maintenance-- downed trees everywhere. The trailhead was insane. I hope they eventually close it to camping like they did Washington Park.

Sleep is overrated, so Whitney & I decided to head up to the Rim this morning. We saw a little smoke from the fire on Mt Ord on our way up the Beeline, then plenty of smoke from the Fulton Fire when we parked at the trailhead. Headed east on Highline, then up Drew Trail. By the time we got to the top, most of the smoke had drifted away from us. We only saw one other person all day until we started to head down See Canyon, then we saw about seven or eight people, but that's it. Great weather, a little warm in the sun, but that was only for short stretches, and the breeze was nice.
