It was a cool and overcast day and, except for 20-30 mph winds, perfect weather. The FR2551 portion of the trail from 525C/Black Tank was indeed a little boring, but once up on the ridge had some nice views of the surrounding terrain, including the Red Rock canyons to the east and Robber's Roost to the west. Spring Creek was flowing nicely, and crossing with dry feet was difficult but not impossible. The water lines on the rocks suggest that the creek level is falling steadily. I took my two dogs, and besides a couple of cactus punctures, no problems. I saw no other people on the trail. Signs of recent deer and elk movement were apparent, but no sightings. Lots of furry coyote scat everywhere. On the way back, spotted a large javelina near Black Tank, and about 20 ducks in the water. Hiked in 4 miles from Mooney trail head, far enough to get a feel for the place. Look forward to a return visit, possibly from the northern terminus of FR525, if access is available.

If accessing this trail from FR525 (as opposed to 525C, see maps) there are a few unruly residents that may try to dissuade you from walking down the forest road (525) which doubles as their driveway. Rest assured that there is a Forest Service easement in place for foot travel on this road that bisects the property. You may want to see Hikeaz's photos and read and/or print out the last one (copy of email correspondence with the FS).
Using the FR525 (vs. 525C) will avoid the hot, boring road-walk portion of this hike, allowing time and energy for further exploration.

Bypassed the keeper.

Canyon narrows are very cool.

Burned half an hour admiring a momma and baby owl...best waste of half an hour I can think of! :y:

Elk trails in Mooney are fantastic.

Hot Hot HOT!! on Mooney trail exit. Approx 88 at the top (which I considered cool), so I'm guessing 95-100+ at the bottom...it was tough to handle for this non-native Arizonan.
