Another early start to make sure I get a parking spot and enjoy the new day.
From the Pyramid trailhead I hiked up Lost Mine, down Mine Drop/Lost Ranch Mine, up Ruins, then west on National.
Went off trail at the quartz boulders to check out a mine below. Bushwhacked from there down to the Bajada, then onto the National to it's western terminus. Hiked up the Alta trail to Maricopa Peak, then down Alta to the Bajada. Took Bajada east to the Ranger trail then up to the National and Goat Hill. Hiked back to the car via Lost Mine and a little bit of Pyramid.
Cool and breezy which was perfect for a long hike. Clouds helped make the scenery even more dramatic. :)

Started hiking just before first light. Witnessed a coyote kill about a mile in. Heard a rush and a squeal nearby. Then a flurry of vicious activity. I couldn't see much in the low light. Thought it was a coyote chasing and catching a rabbit or maybe two javelinas fighting. Within a couple seconds two coyotes came flying in to the melee with more squeals, so I'm pretty sure there was a rabbit involved.
Only saw e few people once I got up on the National. Very busy going down Bursera back to the trailhead. Cars were lined up on Chandler Blvd almost to 17th Ave.
Saw Warren from work and his grown up puppy as they were going up Bursera. Beautiful day to get out and hike. :)

65 degrees at the trailhead and sunny felt nice and warm. 10 degrees cooler on the north slope which stays shaded most of the day this time of year which is nice. Warmer back in the sun after crossing the ridgeline on top. Some Brittlebush starting to come alive from the early Dec rain but more rain definitely needed. After sunset temps quickly plunged to mid 40s, luckily had my winter coat packed away. Waited for nightfall to see the stars.

decided to hit goat hill via ranger this morning since parking isn't usually an issue
for some reason the summit road was closed at the one mile marker, making ranger parking lot full
found a spot not far away in one of the horse lots
got going around 1000
up to goat hill, seeing more people than usual, even for a weekend
west on national, down eliminator and up lost ranch mine
back on national and ranger
gave two parties directions
saw more people on the mine trails that i would have thought
air quality was much better today
cool temps, light breeze
new twist on an old standby

Up Lost Mine to Goat Hill then down and up Ranger. Returned via Lost Ranch Mine.
Much clearer air today. Avoided a lot of people by starting early.

Pyramid/Bursera loop with Ranger and Goat Hill thrown in. Temps in the 40's to start. More people than expected out hiking and biking. Ran about a half mile. :o Let's not do that again. Great day for a hike. :)

Denny said my recent hikes have been too easy and that I need to up my game. We got started at 0500 and headed up Telegraph. A few people out, but not many. Down Kiwanis, where there were a few more people. Turned the headlamps off about halfway down. Sunrise is definitely getting later.

Despite my forgetting to include it in the triplog title, we headed west on Los Lomitas. I was so excited about that, I nearly got lost. Despite being armed, I wouldn’t want to wander too far the wrong direction and end up in South Phoenix. Hearing a few coyotes prompted Denny to declare Lomitas a “wildlife wonderland”, or something like that. Obviously overheated, he was also talking about waterfalls.

South up Ranger, where we decided to skip Goat Hill today, then east on National and back down Telegraph. I do like this loop, and would do it more often if the parking lot opened earlier. As always, great to get a hike in with Denny!

Linda suggested a hike with Los Lomitas included so I was in. I didn’t have a Goat Hill in me today so I nixed that from the get go. When it gets hot I’m not known to make the right call so I called it beforehand. 😂 We got started around 5am. Linda set a comfortable pace and added a variety of topics for an entertaining conversation and enjoyable hike. Los Lomitas section of trail being the highlight with a coyote serenade the whole way. The clouds/smoke kept the sun at bay and it was tolerable for the 7 miles. Always nice to get an early South Mountain hike in. Thanks for the hike Linda! Like HAZ, you rock!

Deserted trails compared to last Saturday. A low temperature of 90 degrees will do that I guess. Nightlife observed: gecko, great horned owl, bat, night hawks. Sweaty hike but not too hot. When I finished it was 97 degrees. :)

Rain in the forecast discouraged us from straying too far from home, so we were looking for the road less traveled nearby. A challenging task in these pandemic times when nature seems to be about the only recreational activity that remains “open” (at least, mostly).

Headed to the west side of SoMo. The new loop 202 extension made it a relatively quick trip to the TH. About 6 cars at the TH when we arrived at 6:45 am.

I’d never started a hike from that side. Nice little climb to the San Juan Road terminus right out of the gate. From there, we hit up the Alta Trail and added the section from the terminus to Maricopa Peak to my SoMo collection.

Saw about 10 others on Alta—which normally would constitute a crowd on that trail.

After descending to the east end of Alta, we followed the summit road up to where the Ranger Trail crosses, and then headed up to the National Trail, where we began our loop back west.

Hit up Goat Hill and had it to ourselves.

Then continued down the National ridge line to the western junction, where we finished off the flat, intra-range trail back to the San Juan terminus—the only section of the National Trail I had not yet traveled. It’s a pretty desolate and nondescript stretch, comparatively—not to mention that, for no apparent reason, it travels East (away from the San Juan terminus) before finally turning back west and north. That blasé section notwithstanding, this was a fun hike with limited encounters with the rest of humanity, and a good stretch of the legs after a week of working from home and staying mostly indoors.

About 20 cars at the TH when we returned around 1 pm.

Carolyn and I made a loop of the Ranger, National, Kiwanis trails with a short side trip down the Pyramid Trail. It was 61 degrees when we pushed off at 9:00 and 71 degrees when we finished. 5.1 miles with 1,050 feet of AEG in 2.25 hours. Another beautiful day for Coronavirus hiking.

Denny’s turn to choose the hike today. We got started around 7:45 and headed up Telegraph. At the the road, we headed down Kiwanis, west on Los Lomitas, then up Ranger. Lots of flowers through that stretch. At the top of Ranger, we headed west on National to Goat Hill, then back east on National down to Telegraph. Despite Denny choosing the hike, he threw me under the bus while talking to two hikers on National; they were surprised we hiked uphill twice and he told them I was a slave driver. Just wait til our next hike together. Back down Telegraph to finish out the hike. Cool and breezy most of the morning, but warm as we finished up the last mile or so.

We were needing to work off some of the caloric sins of too many Christmas parties, so a few extra miles got added to this loop. Up Bursera, east on National, with a side trip to Goat Hill. Down Ranger, then east on Los Lomitas. The “restoration” along Los Lomitas looks like dozens of fifty pound gophers attacked the area. Terrible. Up Kiwanis, which has an Area Closed sign any direction you look. At the top of Kiwanis, we headed west on National, then down Pyramid. Kind of warm by the time we finished.
