One of my favorite Sedona loops that is tough to get takers. A mile of scarce shoulder highway between Sterling Pass Trail #46 and North Wilson Mountain Trail #123 is the issue.

I suggested 6 hikes and Bruce selected this loop. Figured with an early start knocking out the hwy first, it might not be so dangerous. We lucked out. Dave was returning home from a multi-day trip up north. Shuttle plus classic Dave one liners as a bonus!

North Wilson Mountain Trail #123
Typically I prefer the spectacular Autumn foliage display. Late spring green after the better than average rainfall since January was a nice change of scenery.

Wilson Mountain Trail #10
We passed 3 or 4 little groups heading down from Wilson Bench. Tread could use a rake crew.

Jim Thompson Trail #124
Bumping this from 2 stars to 3. Easily higher if weren't for all the nearby world class options.

Cibola Pass & Jordan Trail
Arizona Cypress is one of my favs. Red Rock backdrop makes it sing.

Soldier Pass Trail #66
World class trail packs a mean punch. Never gets old for me. Not busy as the mercury rises. Shockingly had Soldier Arches to ourselves for the majority of lunch until a friendly mother and daughter arrived.

Brins Mesa Trail #119
Not my fav. Highlight was helping out a happy foreign tourist family.

Vultee Arch Trail #22
Abundant rainfall this year has this one feeling like a jungle. Shade in the late afternoon makes ccw favorable.

Sterling Pass Trail #46
Rocks hard IMO. Steep both sides but the views are worth it.

Dave Joined us and since he was meeting us there, we could set up the mini shuttle, avoiding the 1 mile road walk between Trailheads.

Up the North Wilson Trail, we notice quite a bit of recent trail maintenance. So recent, it was from the previous day as noted by @mt98dew in his triplog.

North Wilson Mountain Trail #123 is a much better option in getting to the top of Mt Wilson IMHO. Prettier, more cover, less traffic and a steady climb.

Plenty of flora still Flora-ing all around this loop today.

Down Wilson Mountain Trail #10 on the southside, is a bit rocky at the top. We saw our first groups of hikers on this trail.

Cutting in front of Steamboat Rock, on the Jim Thompson Trail #124, was a first for me. Easy trail and great views. You did not have to concentrate on where you were walking and could enjoy the scenery.

Cibola Pass and the Jordan Trail got us over to the Devils Kitchen sinkhole. From here we headed up the Soldier Pass Trail #66, to our next destination. We surprisingly had had Soldier Arch to ourselves for lunch.

We exited the arch through the top and made our way to the "Eye in the Sky" and then hitting the Brins Mesa Trail #119. This trail has a few interesting areas, mush-so-more that the FR152C road walk. This was the hottest part of the day.

The Vultee Arch Trail #22 was in decent shape, up to the turn to the Arch and had much needed tree cover.

Past this point is the Sterling Pass Trail #46. It is a bit "Thick" from all the spring moisture, but it only lasts a 100yds or so. The climb starts gradual and goes to butt kicker up to the pass. From here, it drops even steeper and rockier down to 89a.

A good hike. In the direct sun with no wind, bordering hot for me. Luckily, we had a decent breeze and tree cover for the bigger climbs. Good seeing Dave again. Joe was there too. :D It'd been a few weeks.

Visited our friends Rich and Sue for a long weekend. Hiked Jim Thompson Trail with dogs Zelda and Kai. We hiked from Jordan Rd TH to Wilson Canyon and turned North or left to add about half a mile. Returned the same way. I was trying to get in 7 miles. Love this hike and on a Sunday morning in December we only saw one hiker and 3 trail runners.

Belated post. This hike occurred about a month ago on the last day of my vacation in Sedona. My numbers may be a bit off, but my memories of the trail aren't (yet :) ). Got a late start. Started off from Midgely Bridge around 6am. Surprised to see that I as the first one there. Jogged this trail as an in and out. Started of on the Wilson Canyon Trail and then took Thompson over to the Jordan TH. The trail is easy to follow, though rocky in parts and is cart wide for the vast majority of it. There is a gradual incline that needs to be climbed as you leave Wilson Canyon Trail, but it pretty much holds the same elevation as it wraps around "steamboat rock". (In my mind it looks more like a battleship). I was surprised to find that as the trail continues to the west and begins a slight descent that it descends into a fairly dense forest of pine trees. This was probably for the last mile or so. This of course, minimizes the views, but offers a nice contrast from the rest of the trail. After checking out the Jordan TH I turned around and jogged back. Only saw one hiker (dog walker) on the entire run. No wildlife.

Finally got a loop around Wilson. jj felt a little uneasy driving up noticing I was wearing pants and a long sleeve shirt. "Off trail on this hike?"... no worse, the overnight low is 31 :scared:

55 degrees starting just before 9am and not much over 60 all day. Hiking weather.

Saw a few individuals heading over Wilson Bench. First time on Jim Thompson. Nice, nearby trails are nicer. Cibola is one of the nicest non water trails around Sedona.

Up and down MG Spire in 1h 15m at a nothing special pace. Couldn't clear the first pitch last month due to a chest injury earlier in the month. Healthy made all the difference. The first pitch was no trouble up or down. The slant up higher was as I remembered. First look it appears a bit sketchy. One or two steps into it and it seems impossible to have trouble unless you jumped out of the crack and off the wall.

Sink hole, seven super sacred pools then off to the arches. Morning light was the ticket last month. Just fair this round, almost dark inside mid day. Crossed paths with a group of interesting people, really just wanted to keep moving...lol

First time on the west side of Brins. Most probably like the red rock east but the west is cypress tree canopy. A pleasant surprise. Up Vultee and down Sterling. The scariest part of the hike was the last mile along the highway. No shoulder and cars whizzing by ultra close.

I'm not sure when the last time I went to Sedona was but it's been far too long. Tuesday I sent Joe a note to see if he would be interested in doing something up there between 12 and 20 miles. He threw together this loop and it turned out to be a gem.

We made our way up the North Wilson Trail passing a few others along the way. Then down the other side and onto the Jim Thompson. From here we took the Cibola trail and jumped off for a quick assault on Morning Glory Spire (this was by far the highlight of the loop for me). After the spire we checked out Devils Kitchen, Seven Sacred Pools and then the Arches.

Finishing our loop we would take Brins Mesa to FR152C and then Vultee Arch Trail up and over Sterling Pass. Sterling Pass is pretty cool and there are some interesting rock formations along the way. Down the other side and it was a short trip down the road back to the car.

I don't think we could have had any better weather. Great hike and good times!

Parked in the empty Grasshopper day use site with the plan to go up Casner Canyon to Schnebly Hill road to Munds Wagon Trail to Cow Pies to Hangover and return on Damifino Trail. Unfortunately, Oak Creek was running strong and running deep. Unable to find a suitable crossing we dropped to plan B. Took Allen's Bend trail down to the bridge and headed up Wilson Canyon trail to the end. Took a side trip up Jim Thompson trail to add some time and miles. Returned the way we came. Passed miles and miles worth of cars heading into Sedona on our way out. Stopped at Red Rock Cafe in Oak Creek for some beers and burgers.

Really liked this hike as it gives almost 360* views as you make your way to turn around at intersection with Wilson Canyon Trail. We added a little over a mile to this hike as we parked on the side of the road when we saw a trail head sign for the hike. Thought I was going to park in a parking lot?? Followed the trail trail to the parking lot...and a second trail head. NowI'm in a Red Rock Pass area. Do I need a $5 pass for my truck a half a mile or so back down the road? My new phone signature is "life is short...break some rules" but do you think I can do it? ....NO, I get the pass and walk to the truck to start the hike all over again. I really don't like getting lost finding a trail head. When you are almost to the turn around you get a nice view of Midgely Bridge.

Covered about half this trail today. Parked at Midgley Bridge and walked up Wilson Canyon to join this trail for some pretty nice early morning views of the area.

Matt and I drove up to Sedona early Saturday morning to join some friends from Flagstaff to run a giant loop through the Red Rock Secret Canyon Wilderness. We met at Midgley Bridge around 7:00am and took off on the Jim Thompson Trail, from here the route looked like this:

Jim Thompson - Brins Mesa - FR 152 - Vultee Arch - Sterling Pass - HWY 89A - North Wilson Mountain - Wilson Mountain

Parked at Midgley Bridge on the 89A and did this hike along with Wilson Canyon Trail We went up Wilson Canyon Trail, passing the Jim Thompson trail conection at about the 0.6 mile point, to the cliff face where the views make the incline worth while.Back down to the intersection of Jim Thompson trail and along it, The view is more open on this trail and as you walk round the base of steamboat rock most of Sedona can be seen. Through a gateway and down to the new trailhead for Jim Thompson / Brins Mesa / Cibola / Jordan. We stopped for lunch on the return leg. We only met two people on the way out and three on the return trip apart from the crowds at the bridge.

Started off the New Year right with a Brins Mesa / Sterling Pass / Wilson / Thompson SUPERLOOP. From the Jordan Road TH, north on Brins to the far end on FR 152, continue up the dirt road to the Vultee Arch TH, pass the arch and up and over spectacular Sterling Pass, then drop down into Oak Creek Canyon. A quick 1 mile down the busy road (shoulder is OK for walking) to the Encinosa picnic area to pick up the North Wilson trail, up and across the bench then back down the Wilson Mtn trail to pick up the Jim Thompson trail for the return. About 17 miles total. Big views down low, a bit of ice and snow up high, yes some fire damage but sometimes it makes for better views.
