Thoroughly enjoyed Palatki Ruins. Palatki and its sister site, Honanki, were the largest cliff dwellings of the Red Rock Country between AD 1150 - 1350. They also exhibit extensive rock art. The sites were first described by Dr. Jesse Walter Fewkes, famous turn-of-the century archaeologist from the Smithsonian Institution, who gave them the Hopi names of Honanki (Badger House) and Palatki (Red House). The Hopi, however, have no specific names for these sites.

Currently managed by the U.S. Forest Service under the Red Rock Pass Program, the site is open to the general public for visits seven days a week (closed Thanksgiving and Christmas). A small visitor center and bookstore, run by the Arizona Natural History Association, is located a short distance from the parking lot.

There are three trails at Palatki Heritage Site, one trail that takes you up to the Sinagua cliff dwellings, one that takes you to a view of the dwellings and a third that goes to the alcoves that shelter the painted symbols, or pictographs from every native culture to ever occupy the Verde Valley. These trails, each ¼ mile one way making the round trip distance one and one half mile, are fairly easy but they are not accessible to most wheelchairs.

We made an appointment for the first tour of the day. The roads are easily manageable for passenger cars even after the rain the day before. The ruins are impressive and the site stewards were very knowledgeable, but it's definitely the rock art that stands out at this location. And the grotto area really does have a sacred feel to it.

With Judy and daughter Amie's family. 6 and 10 year old girls liked the docent talk at the ruins. Good history lesson. People lived here before Columbus discovers America. Also went up the road to Honanki Ruins.

I was dropped off this morning at the Bear Canyon Trailhead and ran out to the Palatki Ruins on FR152. Then I ran back to the Fay Canyon Trailhead and hit the trails back to 89A near Dry Creek Road.

We had just enough time after Devil's Bridge to check out these ruins, but only the pictograph section since we got there 5 min before it closed (3 pm??!!) and anyway, apparently reservations are necessary if you want to see the cliff dwellings. The pictographs and cave the old homesteader lived in in 1923 were pretty interesting to see. The guides who work there were extremely polite and accomodating to us and several others who arrived late. Planning on checking out Honanki and Fay canyon arch tomorrow.

Went with my uncle and his so. Visited Grotto and ruins path. Due to either unstable rocks or wall actually they have a viewpoint set up. Unclear when tours to the dwellings will resume. :(

I had the need to go see some Indian ruins and after checking the HAZ site, I found this hike along with the Honanki Ruin hike. Before you decide to complete this hike be sure to call te Forest Ranger station @928-282-3854 to make a reservation. However, the ranger told me tat te reservation process is pretty "loose". Also, be sure to purcase te $5.00 daily pass required for all autos.

At the parking lot, take the trail first to the cliff dwellings. The dwellings are impressive and the trail allows you get very close to the actual dweelings. After viewing the dwellings, take to the trail back to the visitor center and follow the trail to the Rock Art Trail. A very sort hike takes you to large area set back in the cliff walls adorned with a large selection of Indian rock art.Cool!

Not knowing that I needed a reservation to see the ruins (I guess it pays to do your homework), I arrived at the visitor center eager to explore. "What, you don't have a reservation?! Well, we're not too busy today, so we'll let you in this time." D'oh!
Anyway, I got to see outstanding ruins and prolific rock art images in a beautiful red rock setting. It was definitely worth the drive!

Quick trip to Palatki for photos with friends, then to Honani for more photos. Said goodbye to the friends and followed clues to a cave outside the site--climbed up and found it! The locusts got a 1/4 liter of blood from me, but it was worth it. Pictographs and 'glyphs, a view to die for. Saw a cottonwood tree, stopped the truck, walked in and found a spring-fed large pond full of goldfish!

Did the ruins tour with the family on our last day out of Sedona. Palatki was pretty cool and I liked how raw they kept the site and how well hidden the ruins were.

I called Palatki this morning to see if they had scheduled a viewing of the Agave Roasting Pit site/pictographs. They said to be there at 1:30 and to round up anyone who wanted to come. By the time the 5 of us arrived, there was about 20 people who got to see this seldom scheduled part of the Palatki site. A short trail along the cliff bottom led to the "Bear Cave", named for the bear pictographs. The two docents kept the group going, barely giving all of us with cameras the time to take pictures. Further up the trail is the "Agave Roasting Pit" site. The docents didn't tell the whole story about why this pit was never dug up and eaten (some historical reference to a massacre of the Apaches by the cavalry).
Anyway, the rock art is fantastic. Back down, after trying the docents' patience taking too long for photos, then down to the ruin site. We were the last group of the day and that docent was none too eager to let us linger.

My Dad wanted to do a Sedona hike with me so I took him to these ruins figuring a mile in and out would be fine on a flat trail like this. The ruins are in really great shape and we had the entire area to ourselves since we arrived at the TH around 7:30. My dad is 80 y/o and in reasonably good shape so this trail was no problem for him.....he was like a little kid on the trail and truly enjoyed both the trail and the ruins. He now truly understands why I enjoy the peace and quiet on the trail.....we only had one very loud raven following us.

After we did this and poked around the ruins for a while he wanted to go and hike somewhere else! So I took him on another trek

It was a great father/daughter day.
