John and I parked At Geronimo trail head and walked the road over to Mormon trail head. Hiked up Mormon, through Hidden Valley, over to Bueno Vista and down Geronimo. We started a little before sunrise so the temps never got to bad. Thanks for the hike LP. It’s been to long! 😁 Oh yeah, and I made it through Fat Man’s Pass! Woohoo!!

I wanted to get out in the weather but too much weather ruled out the Supes. South Mountain it was. Started at Pima. Threw on the poncho at 1 mile in. Really started to come down 2 miles in. Creosote was in the air. Hidden Valley was a slip n slide. Chilled in a cave for a while. Was on a roll so decided to push on. Clouds broke just enough for a snack at the tip of Buena Vista. On the way back a hail storm broke out and was a cool experience to be in. Several small streams of hails floated by. I decided to take Mormon Loop back to Pima Road and had to cross several foot deep washes and new waterfalls that weren't there 45 minutes. earlier. Saw all the snow in the Supes.. I need a new truck.

I love National Trail. It remains one of my favorite all time. The views, the (mostly) solitude, the flora and fauna, and the trail itself are all top notch in my book. Wanted to do the whole thing from 51st to 40th but the road was closed towards San Juan so started at the summit and went east.

I had to take advantage of the weather and get one last gasp of night hiking in the 60s before the whole state burns up. Damn near perfect!

Exercise hike to shake off some rust. Took Marcos - Guadalupe - National to the Old Holbert Lookout. Then back on National and took the washes to Ridgeline. Finished on Pima Wash. Lots of folks in the usual placeas. Great weather!

I haven’t been able to get out lately so an opportunity to knock out a few miles on a weekday evening fit the bill. The new speed bumps on the Pima trailhead road are worth $1 million each. They’re named Everest, K2, Lhotse, and Annapurna. I recommend caution while crossing them.

I’m not sure how I agreed to Guadalupe Ridge because I hate the climb. But I managed to not complain too much. Surprisingly after half a mile there wasn’t another person visible for the rest of the hike. Possibly because nobody used a headlamp due to the prolific moonlight.

I didn’t bother to check out Denny's pfancy new prison toilets despite nature’s call.

The only benefit to 80 degree days in January is the perfect evening temps. I talked Chumley into joining me with the promise of checking out some cool toilets or something. We went up Marcos, then Guadalupe Ridge, taking National back east with a trip through Hidden Valley. Moonlight was more than enough, we never needed headlamps. Didn't see anyone else after we finished Marcos.

The upgraded trailhead is kind of lame. I'm not sure what they worked on for 5 months. But, it's a place to park, don't really need anything else. Despite starting & ending route scout at the same time, and both using the same model of phone, Chumley managed to get 1/4 mile more than me--route scout must measure words spoken as bonus distance!

I took my Grandkids, Isaac and Lily , to see Fat Man's Pass. They enjoyed it along with the tunnel and all the sliding opportunities in Hidden Valley. An added bonus we ran into Whitney and Stephanie right before we finished. Good to see you ladies! Great weather, company and hike! :y:

Another winter break hike with the kids, plus Whitney and one of her daughters joined us. We started from Buena Vista around 10am, still a little foggy out, and some light drizzle at the start. Headed east on National to Hidden Valley, took the kids through there--which they always like--and then returned on National. Dodged several bikes while on National, but luckily no kids got run over. At one point, Wyatt asked how much longer, and I said "We're almost there, not much more" to which he immediately replied "No, we're not". Whitney thought it was great that even Wyatt doesn't believe my pep talk lies while hiking. The kids wanted to play in Hidden Valley longer than time today would allow, so I'll have to bring them back soon via Mormon Trail.

My seven-year-old and I joined Linda and her two kids for a child-friendly SoMo hike. Nice way to spend a cloudy and foggy morning. Parked at Buena Vista lot, hiked east on National to Hidden Valley and back. My daughter enjoyed "Fat Man's Pass" and climbing rocks in Hidden Valley. Following the hike, she asked for her own Camelbak for Christmas! New HAZ member in the making.

Happy Holidays to all!

I went up Geronimo to Buena Vista. From there to Hidden Valley and back down on Mormon. I walked Euclid st. back to 20th st. and my car. The trails were not crowded at all. Everyone friendly. I heard one young couple talking about a Rim to Rim 8) . I saw a Blacktail and one Roadrunner 8) (not together) :) . Nice hike!
I almost forgot. Geronimo has a small reroute. The spot were you turn off on Geronimo to keep from going straight towards the boy scout camp has been changed. The turn has been blocked off and moved a little north. There is a trail pole there but the pole has no markings. You turn right at the pole. They added a long switchback then your back on the old trail. :D

Did you ever have one of those days when everything just felt right? Started out up the Marcos de Niza trail, then the Guadalupe Ridge trail to the end then a little of the National to the Buena Vista parking lot. Around the bench at the top of the Geronimo trail, then back down the National to Hidden Valley and through it, so I could claim this hike that I was missing. Back to the National backtracking to the Mormon Loop. Then feeling that I hadn't had all the elevation I wanted I continued on the Ridgeline trail. Even though I had made a few side trails, I still felt that the hike was too short, so I threw in a few other nondescript trails. In fact I only quit when I did because I was past due to return home. Everything just felt right today. Yup a great day for a hike.

A few wildflowers are starting to show. Globe mallows are opening up.

My friday hiking partner bailed on me and I didn't feel like driving anywhere to hike so me and a friend met up at South Mountain early this morning to knock out some miles. The temps were perfect until the last mile or so but even then they weren't so bad. We had clouds and a nice breeze all morning. The trails were pretty busy today with hikers and mountain bikers. You know summer is ending when you can do 12.5 miles in Phoenix and say you had a nice time :y:

Second time this year I got stung by a bee. Gnats were off the chart 9-11am due to my slow pace. Explored a few areas and threw in a bit of Corona East to satisfy my 1k diet.

We decided to do an early morning hike with the kids (ages 4, 5, & 14) to Hidden Valley. To minimize the elevation gain for the little legs, we started from the Buena Vista parking lot. It was really a nice morning for a hike, cool & breezy; the only difficult part was keeping the kids out of the way of the bicyclists. The kids really enjoyed Hidden Valley and the fun of climbing over some of the boulders along the trail.
