Up Telegraph to national, down Corona back on Desert Classic to T/H. First time I’ve done this route. Great hike and good views. The cloud cover made for awesome sights. The snow on Four Peaks was glistening when the sun poked out. Met Mark, a fellow hiker on National and walked most of the loop with him. He gave me good pointers on some good hikes. Ran into @LindaAnn starting down Corona and had a brief chat. Got on the trail to Desert Classic and I said to Mark that it is smooth sailing back, and just when he was about to reply I slipped on a rock and almost fell on my butt. Slipping on the flat trail, after coming down on the rocky trail was embarrassing. 😡OH WELL!! Won’t be the last time. It was a great day for my New Years Day hike since I won’t be able to go on New Years Day. HAPPY NEW YEAR everybody!!

Afternoon trail run from the Pyramid trailhead. I ran a clockwise loop of Bursera and Gila with a small segment on National.

I saw two snakes today, a dark reddish colored coachwhip in a ravine behind Bursera Peak and a speckled rattlesnake near the trailhead.

Did Pyramid, National, and Lost Ranch loop this morning. Trailhead temp was 37 at 7:15 and WINDY! Lots of construction going on with the 202 extension. Great loop. Excellent way to end 2018.

Debated between Shaw Butte-North Mountain and this loop. Never done the SB-NM loop, but I was having a hard time convincing myself that it would be a better use of my hiking time, so opted to hit up this SoMo hike instead. Any SB-NM loop cheerleaders who want to convince me I made the wrong choice?

I hadn't done the southern (upper) portion of Holbert before. After traversing along the National, we decided to off-trail it up to the towers. Nice views. Then traversed west along the fenceline to where we could turn the corner and look down on Ahwatukee and Telegraph Pass. Stopped for a snack and to enjoy the views for a bit, including a hawk of some sort, taking in the updrafts and circling below and then above us.

Took a nice ridgeline down towards TG Pass, eventually connecting with the National Trail before making the final swing around to TG Pass.

The descent on Kiwanis was nice, and then the ho-hum finish on Los Lomitas and the Box Canyon Loop trails.

A great morning to be out, though we ended up with some stop-and-go traffic on Baseline due to a very poorly managed hole-digging exercise at the 32nd street intersection. :x I deal with my fill of rush hour traffic on the weekdays, so having to battle it on a Saturday morning was no bueno. ](*,)

The first hike I ever did in AZ was the Telegraph Pass Trail on Memorial Day weekend in 1999. I was visiting a friend who lived there at the time, but I was also scoping out Phoenix and how to move here from PA. that day I hiked up to the National Trail and then headed east until I was under the towers, then headed back. I always remember that weekend it was 115, crazy hot even by our standards. This time it was much cooler, and I did things much wiser than I did 19 years ago. I also did the loop taking the National Trail to Corona de Loma and returned on the Desert Classic. I have hiked this particular loop twice before, the first time was not too long after I moved here. I think that was the first time I realized I could plan out different hikes in the park making these kind of loops. That was also I believe the longest hike I had ever done, which also broadened my horizons.

About a quarter mile after the Telegraph Pass Trail heads north from the junction with the Desert Classic Trail, there is a very well marked spur that takes you to a very prominent petroglyph site. Before this day, I have never noticed this. Funny to think that I've hiked right passed this area several times in the past having no clue it was there.

The views up along the National Trail were the best, although the weather was a bit hazy. There is a sign in register along the National Trail just under the radio towers. Not sure why, but I signed in anyway.

the Corona de Loma Trail seemed much easier to walk from the very first time I remember hiking it, about 17 years ago. But much has changed since then in terms of how and when I hike, and footwear.

The hike back on the Desert Classic always seems to be a bit of a slog. As you near the Telegraph Pass TH, there is very prominent trail to the south that heads up along the top of a ridge and then loops back to the Desert Classic. Looks like that's another hike plan for another cooler weather weekend.

After this spent the afternoon with friends in downtown Phx watching the Rattlers game, and then at their house. did some extra walking downtown from our parking garage to lunch, then to the arena, then back to the car. Probably at least an additional 2 miles of walking for the day. Very fun day, very little of which was spent at home.

My knee seems to be holding up very well recently. No pain at all the next day, and the "looseness" in it also seems to be subsiding. the brace seems to be helping with that alot, but it also tend to exacerbate my usual case of heat rash on my calves. Seems like new problems every week, but the priority level goes down each time at least.

My buddy's idea of a bachelor party was to hike the National trail to its end and back. Long fun hike, and the weather was perfect.

I saw Lindaagm's track for Telegraph to the Dobbins Lookout, and it sounded good so I thought I would give it a go. I have been on all these trails before, just not in this combination, fun trip! I pulled into the Telegraph TH about 4:15 to get started. I tried to keep a really fast pace since I knew I was limited on daylight. I knocked out the 1.2 miles to the pass in 20 minutes even, pretty happy about that. I saw about 20-25 hikers to this point, then I only saw one lone biker on the trail until I reached the Dobbins lookout. Took a short break here to scarf down a Nature Valley granola bar while watching a gaggle of folks who mostly drove up to the top, how lame. Started back and I did not see anyone else until the pass, and then only a handful of people in the dark. Never needed my headlamp, enough city glow to light my way. Well worth doing this one again!

We needed a quick, easy hike this morning, and this was perfect. We started at Telegraph Pass, then headed east on National, through Hidden Valley, then over to Mormon Loop, and on out to the Pima Canyon trailhead. Nice morning, but I thought it was a little warm the last hour or so.

The usual Sunday night hike with a girlfriend. We left one car at Pima Canyon trailhead, then took the other car over to Telegraph Pass trailhead. Up Telegraph Pass, east on National, through Hidden Valley, and back to Pima Canyon. Saw one rattler, which we pretty much expect at this point.

Finally--managed to get a night hike in. It had been a couple of weeks, since the work schedule of "He Who Earns the Money" takes precedence over the hiking schedule of "She Who Spends the Money". My friend and I started at the Telegraph Pass trailhead a little before 5:30pm. We headed up Telegraph, then east on National, through Hidden Valley, and down to the Pima Canyon trailhead. She had never been on National between Telegraph Pass and the Buena Vista lookout, and luckily it was still light enough for her to see most of it. Saw one rattler, a coyote, and plenty of rabbits along the trail.

Looking for a hike nearby that we could complete before lunch. Goat Hill via Ranger has been on my "wish list" for awhile, so we hit it up. This was my first time hiking SM, west of Telegraph Pass. Decided to make it a loop, via National, Kiwanis, and Los Lomitas. Beautiful weather today, though the air was a bit hazy. I really enjoyed the views along the trail of the Estrellas and SW valley, from the Ranger/Nat'l junction to Goat Hill. Made me even more excited for a full ridgeline hike (...another one that's been sitting on my to-do list for far too long).

There were about 5 cars in the Ranger TH parking lot when we arrived (around 7 am-ish). Saw 7-10 hikers/trail runners on the way up. Had the Goat to ourselves for awhile, and then were joined by a couple of guys we passed on the way up, who were starting to train for their first GC trip in May. We descended the Goat and then took National East. Started to run into the masses as we approached Telegraph Pass, and continued down Kiwanis. Nobody on Los Lomitas, which was the most drab part of the hike. Ranger TH parking lot was filled to capacity when we got back.

Made pit stop at REI on the way home and picked up some new hiking shoes. :y:

All in all, a great morning!

Well it was a great morning for a hike. Sad part is that I was not the only one with that thought. It was very busy out today of course the weather was great. I mainly hike out here today was to see how much rain South Mountain got and I think she did good.
Tomorrow I'll take a look at the Superstitions.

Well my short hike up the Pyramid Trail turned into a bit of a fun little adventure when I received notification that my daughters' flight from the midwest was being delayed. I'm not sure if this loop I did is an actual loop anywhere, so I'll describe the route and perhaps one of you South Mountain trekkers could fill me in and correct me.

I parked at the end of Chandler and essentially took the Pyramid Trail all the way to the National Trail and headed west. Opposite the Pyramid summit, the National Trail continued off to the right, and there was an unmarked trail heading left (south) which forked around a peak. I took the left and had some fun heading down some steep and loose rock, but it appeared to be a relatively unused trail which was cool. At the bottom I grabbed what was presumably the trail which went around the other side up a little bit to a mine shaft--became eerily shaken when I saw blankets deep inside and it could have been my imagination, but I swear there was movement. :o

From here I hopped onto the Lost Ranch Ruins trail back to my car. I did jump off trail at several points to look around and try snapping a photo or two. I must say I was shocked at how blistering cold it felt at the start of the National Trail and heading west!

This was actually run in reverse, Pima to Telegraph. Glad I got an early jump on this one, starting at 5:15am because it was hot by the time I finished around 7:40.
