Alexa says: 90 and 49, "yep, I can do that". I chose this area as I have lots of options depending on how I'm doing. I just wanted to get around five miles in if I could. I also like this area as I don't have to worry so much about running into snakes.

It was overcast so that meant no hat, no sunglasses! I did bring my little umbrella just in case. I kind of had a sense of what route I wanted to take. I was hoping I would feel up to VOAZ but the breeze wasn't blowing in the right direction for that. There were moments when it was almost delightful out there with the key word being "moments", ha!

I basically hiked to the south of Happy Hour Ridge and over to 1A and back on 100 to meet up with 8 passing by two horseshoe options. I saw maybe 8 hikers, some with dogs and 1/2 dozen bikers. On the way back as I neared the wash areas the cicadas were most vocal and I did see a few quail out for their morning stroll. I was obviously a little slower but it was humid out there . But something is better than nothing.

On the drive in a bunny scampered across the road in front of me, don't know why they don't scamper the opposite direction. On the drive out I saw a very little bunny and a little squirrel. I stopped by Q-Trip for my frozen cappuccino, had to get the other flavor as the one I normally get was broken. I couldn't resist the giant maple bar either. It had started to sprinkle and when I got home I could see it had rained pretty good :) .

WATCH: 4.61 miles with avg bpm 123, max 162 (10% at Max, 36% at anaerobic, the rest at aerobic) burning 597 calories. Starting temp 86 and 54% humidity finishing at 8:57AM.

Wanted to get a little elevation in today and also take advantage of the mild morning temp. It seemed a bit humid for the first mile. As usual I didn't quite take the path I wanted to hook up with 8 but I got there. I never seem to take the same trail. There was some shade as I got closer to the west side of the eastern mountains. This trail is a little rocky and since I've been spoiled with hiking in the Sonoran Preserves, it was a bit annoying. Made it up to the saddle and then enjoyed the new switchback they have taking you down the south side. It's not really new but I remember the old deep ditch so well.

And then it was up the old road with its little ditches or deep ruts to the pavement that takes you to Ruth. I still miss the old gate for the house; a new gate has still not been put in but I don't know that anyone lives there anymore. It looks like some structures may have been removed. The satellite visual still shows it with the old gate.

I always like Ruth's trail. I see they have closed off the one little hill to the left (southwest). I decided to head to the top of Ruth's trail before backtracking to go down 8A. There were a few people along the way before I climbed into the deep wash where I encountered a long garter snake that was taking its time getting to its rock cave. Headed out of the wash and west to 304 to VOAZ. There is this one area with saguaros that I always admire and there was some low lying saguaro blooms that I started to take pictures of and then a hummingbird came. I was surprised to see when I got home that I got two good pictures.

Now to head up 304 and crossover to VOAZ. I felt pretty strong and thot back to certain times when these climbs would seem harder and take me longer. Now I almost enjoy them. Not that this was a tough climb by any means. Over I went and down around and over to the north side and up and over and around to the TH. However, as I got to the saddle of the first of those north hills the bees fired up and I heard them off and on for about another 1/2 mile or more. One of these times when I come over that last hill I'm going to run down to Kathy and Karl's for a break.... I'd call first. Along the way (36th St area) I see they now have a new fence and posted private property where someone has put in a nice desert oasis of some sort.

Other observations: Seemed lightly hazy all the way around in the distance. The most hummingbirds I've seen on a hike, about 7 or 8. It seemed to be no leash day. However, I was impressed with this one fellow and his leash-less dogs as they pulled off the trail and he asked them to sit and they did. But I think the dogs seemed a little tired. Nonetheless, never seen anything like that before.

I enjoyed my Grand Canyon Brewery Prickly Pear beer at 9:30; very refreshing. Then on the way home I got fuel for Tonto 3 and fuel for me in the form of a frozen cappuccino which I haven't had in ages. They also remodeled the Q-T. I seem to go inside much less since I retired.

WATCH: 6.5 miles. 129 avg bpm with a max of 152 bpm. 25% at Zone 5, 41% at Zone 4, 30% at Zone 3, 3% Zone 2 burning 845 calories. Starting temp 66.1 and 29% humidity finishing at 9:29AM.

well, I did it and still had gas left but then again, the temp was pretty nice with occasional filtered sun and light breeze. But then again, hiking up pavement is a tad easier than dirt for sure.

I started from VC and headed west to join up with the 100 to come up from that side via what I call the cut, as I don't like hiking near the road. I got up in pretty decent time I thot. The hike up does have a couple steep sections. And then down I went all the way to 7th St (with another pretty steep section toward the bottom) where I ended up hiking next (south) to the road (7th St)... which I hate because of all the vehicle noise.

Eventually I would see a cut through the bushery and I took that thinking it would take me to North Mountain Parking which it did but not quite like I thot. I hadn't been here since 1998 or so. There were quite a few people taking this route up to the paved part of the trail to North Mountain. It's steep but short though.

I headed back up to the top again and as I headed back down my neighbor texted me that I left my garage door open. Fortunately we are in a gated community and they were going to be home so no need for her to make the garage door run. I finished off the hike with nice temps and slightly filtered sky. On the way to Trail 100 I saw lots of blooming Ironwood. I couldn't tell if the Ironwood blooms were just starting or on the wane. I did see a few blooming saguaros.

The other interesting thing is there weren't as many people as I'm used to seeing but then again, this isn't the weekend. Don't get me wrong, I still ran into quite a few hikers, especially on the paved part but it just seemed less on the dirt part of the trail. Lots of dogs too. This one lady hiker on North Mtn had her whole body covered except her nose...

Anyway, it's a shame to be getting this strong only to have to curtail the hiking now because of the upcoming heat. I sure got spoiled with the temps this last month.

WATCH: 5.91 miles, 130 bpm with max 161 bpm. 33% at max, 20% at anaerobic, 44% at aerobic burning 840 calories. Starting temp 62.5 degrees and 39% humidity (humidity didn't seem that high). Finish 10AM

Parked at Dreamy Draw Park and headed thru the tunnel to other side of the freeway. Much quieter over here and still good scenery and hiking. Climbed a couple peaks along the way near trail 100 and a couple more at sw terminus of the Stoney Mountain Ridgeline. Nice area and nice views!

After visit to CPA, wife dropped me off at Desert Cove for a walk home on Trail #100. About 150 yds. of fresh rock clearing & grading below the city ranger's house. Used to be mildly bumpy, now billiard table smooth. 🤔

a pre Linda,Tom hike. Had a bad day on Tue after 2nd dose but went to strength class yesterday and did this today with relative ease; altho felt tired at times. Went counterclockwise and rounded both towers. Some people traffic but not bad. Wildlife count: 1 rabbit at the end, 2 lizards, 4 squirrels including one in the parking lot area as I enjoyed my beer. Coming down that south side is a bit slippery but short. Could hear voices off to the left when I was heading north toward the VC. I stopped several times and I think I spotted some people up on the side of the mountain to the west of me. They weren't on the trail of course.

WATCH: 5.09 miles 139 avg bpm 172 max. 45% in max Zone 5, 37% Zone 4, 18% Zone 3 burning 777 calories. 56.7 degrees and 56% humidity (that doesn't seem right but it shows 44% humidity at 6:44) at finish of 4:05PM.

Decided to take it easy this weekend by hiking something tame close to home. I love stoney mountain and want to hike the entire ridge someday. This is the extreme SW portion of it in a previously unexplored part of the Preserve for me. Lots of pretty scenery and no crowds or noise once you get away from Dreamy Draw and the freeway. Very fun!

My wife and youngest daughter had a Girl Scouts hike for the morning, I suggested to the troop leader that they should check out the petroglyphs on Shaw Butte. They did and enjoyed it (woo hoo!), but my daughter lost her hat somewhere in the vicinity. My wife called me once they noticed and asked me to come out and try to find it. Good for me, gave me a break on my week-long holiday 'vacation' that has been a full time and then some home improvement fun of tearing out and installing a new floor through the whole house. I figured if I was going to help, I had to at least get in a full Shaw Butte. I did not have any luck finding her hat at the site, but had a good climb up the mountain. Made it up without any breaks, maybe I am in a bit better shape than I thought despite the Covid 15 lbs. Took a short break on one of the rock outcroppings and powered on home to cut some baseboards. Happily, I managed to find the hat on the way down, so double win. Good flow of traffic on the trail, but not as many folks as I expected to see out. Felt good to pass people both going up and going down. Happy 2021 hiking HAZ folks.
