Modified version of the 7 Slag Piles Challenge, good for a workout and plenty of views of metro Phoenix (boy we have a lot of golf courses). Staying in the same general area kept the total driving between trailheads to 31 miles / 90 minutes.

One last challenge finished before traveling to Guatemala to climb three volcanoes and then Mexico to climb iztaccihuatl and Pico de Orizaba, both volcanoes that i wasnt able to summit back in January due to unforseen circumstances.
For the Phoenix Summit Challenge i joined a couple friends who were taking part of the PHX7 part, of the seven Phoenix summits (Alta, SoMo via Holbert, Piestewa, Dixie, Lookout, NorMo and Shaw Butte) i was able to do 6 of them because Alta was a parking lot shuttle for paying participants.
There was many people at the 5AM start at Alta Peak and was the same at Piestewa Peak but the herd really started to thin out after peak 3 at Dixie Mountain, parking at the remaining THs became progressively easier as the day went on.
Im not much of a city hiker, my biggest gripe of all these trails was the paved section at North Mountain and part of Shaw Butte. My favorite of these six trails i was on was Holbert trail at SoMo.
Since i wasnt able to get the $75 ticket to officially "participate" on this event i didnt have a passport where everyone was getting theirs stamped at every peak but the volunteers gladly were stamping my arm (though the sweat erased them almost immediately). I finished the last peak at 410PM (Holbert) and was ready to go home and relax but instead a couple of other hikers gave us their dinner tickets and i readily accepted the free food from the food trucks at the event. Much needed beer was at the event as well with taps from North Mountain Brewery, Mission and Sun Up.
Overall my fellow hiking friends and i had a great time at the trails and could possibly do it again next year.

Denny and I decided that we had to do a repeat New Years Eve hike sporting our stylish attire.

We made the last minute decision to stay close to town and try to attack the 7 Peak challenge.

So it was Squaw Peak at 6am in the dark to begin. I was surprised that there were people finishing at 6am when we were starting. Also surprised that there were people climbing it without a headlamp on a moonless night. This hike seemed easier to me in the dark. Snapped a Self Summit photo.
#1 Done

Next it was off to Camelback. This one was our biggest concern for the day. The Web site says it opens at sunrise, and we knew we'd be there just after sunrise. With the parking problems over there, we were concerned we'd get a spot. When we pulled in all the spots on the street and the lot were full. Joe's favorite pair of officers were controlling the crowds. Just as we were getting ready to make the turn out of the lot, someone returned, and we were in the front row! This was actually my first time up Camelback. Now I can say I've done it. I don't care for the crowds. Had our Summit picture taken,
#2 Done.

Now off to South Mountain and the Holbert Trail. Another trail I've never fully done. Quite pretty. I enjoyed the petoglyphs at the beginning. We made our way to the Gila Lookout, south of the TV towers, and had our summit picture taken by a decked out road biker. On the way down Holbert saw two mountain bikers crash, one right at my feet. Those guys/gals are nuts.
#3 Done.

Now back up north, to hit up North Mountain. A steep climb up some rough rocks to get to the pavement that takes you to the top. Had our Summit picture taken.
#4 Done

Shaw Butte was next. Now I'm getting to the point that I just want to get these done.
Up to the top past a decorated tree and cactus with a Santa hat. Had our summit picture taken
#5 Done.

Off to Shadow Mountain. I took Denny on the Scenic route to get to this peak. It was a steep bugger getting up. Running on empty now, but only one more to go. Took our Self portrait Summit Picture at the top.
#6 done

Now Lookout Mountain to finish things off. I'm really beat now, this climb is mostly a blur. Made it to the top, had our summit picture taken taken by a nice couple. We told them we just completed the 7 summits and told them what they were. They asked us how many days it took us.
#7 Done

It was nice doing our second annual NYE hike. Always fun hiking with the Turtle.

Completed that 7 summit challenge on Friday. The trails included Holbert, Ranger, Piestewa, Mohave, Lookout Mountain(circumference/summit), North Mountain and Shaw Butte. Including drive time it took a little over 8 hours to complete the challenge. Weather was beautiful for this event, slightly overcast and windy at times. Got to Holbert trail around 6am with about 150 other enthusiasts. Slow going at first, because there was a kongo line going up the trail...you could only go as fast as the person in front of you, and initially there were quite a few people in front of me. By the time I got to Ranger trail the line of hikers started to disperse as the different paces of people started to separate them. Piestewa trail was nice, but crowded. You had the event, plus your usual allotment of morning hikers. Mohave was the easiest of the seven offering a nice cool down after Piestewa. From here, I drove to Lookout Mountain and did the circumference and summit trails. I had been drinking alot of fluids along the way, but at this point I started to tighten up in my calves. Parked at the North Mountain Vistor Center and took the Christiansen and a connector to North Mountain. Trail trail is easy because it is all paved, but it is also all uphill. I was really feeling it as this point. I was dreading Shaw Butte, but it was the last one so I soldiered on. Felt great when I got to the top and got the seventh stamp in my passport. In total did a little over 23 miles in doing the 7 summits.

Summit 7 of the challenge. Came off North Mountain, hooked up with Christiansen for a bit and then jumped (or in my case limped) onto the Shaw Butte Trail.

We decided to go out the week prior to the City of Phoenix' annual event because we wanted to include actual SUMMITS.
Completed our 7 summits in 10:40 (includes driving, food, and hiking time).
Below is our order (hiking times are TH to TH)
1. South Mountain-Holbert (Mineral Road Lot to Dobbins Lookout and back): 1:15
2. Camelback-Cholla: 1:15
3. Squaw Peak: 1:10
4. Shaw Butte: 1:10
5. North Mountain: :45
6. Lookout Mountain: :35
7. Shadow Mountain: :35
Total Hiking Time: 6:45
What a BLAST! Exhasting and hot (an unbelievable 94 degrees at the end of October) but very rewarding. Will definitely be an annual event.

Though Phoenix mountains never reach higher than the 4000 range especially Esterella, they have great hikes, that can be ball busters. some of the hardest trails I ever walked up are the Phoenix surrounding mountains. The rockies where easier for me than these mountains.

Papago is got to be the strangest place I been to in awhile besides the Chircuahua. I call this park Dinosaur DO-DO. The caves is a wonderland for exploring. forget the trail, and just play like a child. I made it to the top several times, and is a easy walk up, but if you are afraid of heights then maybe you should stay on the bottom part. lol. Though small in size it has a punch of enjoyment to offer.

South Mountain in the summer heat is a freakin killer, but I have hiked many of the trail and all the new ones of Ahwatukee most people never even heard of. I live right at the base of South mountain, and so I walk it a lot. The Ahwatukee side is almost always alone on the trails. Gila trail is a great hike to Telegraph pass.

Pist. - Squaw peak is surely a ball buster if you are not ready for it. only one mile to the top, but you will think you hiked 10 before it is over, but the view is a great one from up there. I feel so out of shape when 70 year olds are passing me 3 times on this trail. I just dont get it, how they are doing it so quickly. I am surely humbled by the Phoenix Hiking Machines that trek this mountain daily.

Camelback - is surely the Knee buster hill. I have hiked this mountain once the whole way, starting from the golf course and ending up on the other side. This one put me out of commission for 2 months, since I had 2 knees surgeries and had my cartilage removed. It is an easy trail but again if you are not ready for it, it can be a killer trail. I hear all the time people dying on this trail, if that is true or not, i am not sure, heck I am an eastern Smoky Mt man who just moved here.

I havent done North Mountain, Usery, or Esterella so if you wanna go with me and you walk slow, then look me up, I am ready. Plus I am ready to bike all the Canal trails in Phoenix as well, since it is easier on my knees.

A Challenge for sure. How can you expect it not to be when you have Camelback and Squaw Peak as hikes #2 and #3, with four more peaks to go. :)

Lots of fun. I ran most of Shaw Butte which was an uphill drain.
