From Warpaint trailhead, Old Man's>Geronimo>Corona. No hikers seen on Corona or Old Man's which is a first for me. Six hikers and a dozen or more mountain bikers on Geronimo.
Thought I might see a bunch of critters following last night's rain and full moon. Only saw a gecko. :)

Met Kelly at the Geronimo trailhead for an early morning hike. The temperature was a little cooler than it has been, but the humidity was still very high.
We spotted two black tailed rattlesnakes and a sun spider in the first mile. The low light pictures I took didn't turn out very well.
After hiking up Geronimo, we descended Corona, then east to hike up Old Man trail. By this time the sun was out warming things up and the sweating began in earnest. Once we topped out on Old Man/Guadalupe Ridge, most of the days climbing was over which felt good.
We chatted with a couple "regulars" I see on South Mountain which was interesting.
A quick descent on Geronimo then off for burritos at Speedy Street Tacos.
Fun morning. Thanks Kelly. :)

Hadn't hiked with Kelly in over 4 months. Don't get her mad.
Started up Geronimo at the first hint of light. We hit the highpoint benchmark at Eagle Pass/Guadalupe Ridge before descending to the National on our way to Hidden Valley. Hiked all the way through Hidden Valley to the tunnel before we saw anyone. Kelly thought they were testing an herbal remedy by the smell of things. A few Bursera were in bloom attracting bees as well as a wet spot covered in them.
On the way back we crossed paths with a man in levis with no water. Maybe homeless?
We descended Geronimo via the boy scout trail which is a little shorter and prettier than the standard route.
Breakfast burritos followed the hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

Started early. Hiked Old Man's>Geronimo>Corona.
Somo got some rain, but not enough. Guessing 1/10 inch.
Had another chat with the Picketpost Man on Geronimo. He says the boy scout camp land was donated by the Heard family, and they stipulated access to the park has to be maintained. So the no trespassing signs can be ignored. He does a loop that finishes through the camp.
Also chatted with a couple ladies taking a short hike on Geronimo before volunteering feeding folks at a mission. Social morning. Happy Father's Day all. :)

Up Old Man's, down and up Geronimo, down Corona de Loma. Nice morning.
Crossed paths with the "Picketpost Man" on Geronimo. Mid 80's, no shirt, external frame pack. 50 yards ahead of the rest of his group (youngsters). Still has a twinkle in his eyes. :)

Hiked Geronimo from Beverly Canyon TH via Ridgeline, Javelina, Mormon Loop, & National. Got an early start so I didn't see many people until the return leg.
Nice sunrise. Decent temps.
Saw a blacktailed rattler on Geronimo. :)

Hiked Corona loop and Geronimo from the Warpaint trailhead with Sidewinder add on. Saw four or five hummingbirds, a swallow, and other usual sightings. Fair amount of people out hiking and biking considering the 100+ degree temps forecasted. Fairly cool before 0730. :)

Hiked Corona loop and Geronimo from the Warpaint trailhead. Added Sidewinder on the return. Ran into two large packs of chatty cathys on Geronimo. Other than that it was pretty quiet. Hazy air. Finished before it got very warm. :)

Up Corona, which had a nice breeze. Dead rattler up at the road, which again had its rattle removed. Down Geronimo, then through the neighborhood over to Mormon. Topped off my water, then headed up Mormon, which had no breeze. West on National, then down Corona East. Ran into one of my nephews on Desert Classic, so we jogged back to Warpaint together. Decent temps today.

With Saturday wide open and my usual hiking partners unavailable this weekend, I decided to do a solo hike at South Mountain, a longer variation on a route that I typically choose. It was in the mid-60s and very comfortable when I started at ~6:30AM and was a lot less busy than I expected for a Saturday Morning at SoMo on a nice day.

I started up Marcos de Niza and and continued along Guadalupe Ridge...I didn't see too many people along that stretch except around Observation Point. From there, I headed into new territory and hiked down Corona de Loma East (Old Man Trail) and over to Corona de Loma Trailhead. Once I was down off the ridge, that part of the hike was flat and not particularly scenic, but there are a lot of nice houses in the neighborhoods over there.

I hiked back up onto the ridge and through Eagle Pass via Corona de Loma Trail...it was fairly steep, with a lot of switchbacks. I saw the waypoint for Chinese Wall on the route but didn't really notice it as I passed...I probably looked right at it and didn't think it looked very wall-like. I'm guessing South Mountain's Chinese wall isn't visible from space :). At Buena Vista Lookout, I headed west for a short out-and-back to Dobbins Lookout before returning and picking up Geronimo Trail and following that down into the residential neighborhoods and over to Mormon Trailhead.

I took a short break there before the final long ascent of the day. It as around noon by that point, and all the other hiker traffic on Mormon Trail was going down, so I didn't have to bother dodging two-way traffic on the way up. I connected with Mormon Loop Trail and then took Javelina and the Ridgeline Trail over to Pima Trail/Beacon Hill and back to the trailhead. It finished it off with a short out-and-back on National Trail since it was still early in the afternoon.

The afternoon got warm but not uncomfortably hot, in the mid-80s when I finished. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary today as far as wildlife, but there were plenty of blooming cacti and ocotillo. South Mountain doesn't offer the most interesting or overwhelmingly beautiful hiking, and certainly not an opportunity to get away from crowds, but it was nice to check out some new trails at my own pace on a solo hike.

A family friend came in from the freezing snows of Michigan so decided to treat her with a nice warm hike. Up Mormon and down
Geronimo. Stopped at Hidden Valley tunnel and a side trip to Fat Man’s Pass. I have now hiked the National trail from East to West-
Not all in the same hike- with the section between Fat Man’s Pass and San Jaun Rd. Being completed on this hike. We passed a few hikers enjoying the day. Each time I have been on Mormon I see the same two hikers. One runs and passes me twice as I hike the trail and the other hiker I always pass at Hidden Valley. I love the rock formations. They always puts me in Awe. I guess I am easily impressed!!😁 We took a short break at the bench before descending down Geronimo. It was the first time hiking Geronimo and came out and the Scout Camp at the bottom of the mountain. The hike was very enjoyable with a nice day to go with it. Great day for a hike!!! HAPPY HIKING!!!
