The mornings are starting to cool off and feel a little more comfortable, though it was more humid today than it's been the past few weeks. I wanted to squeeze in a hike before work again this week and found a relatively open morning. Work meetings don't adjust with the sunrise, unfortunately, so I continue to start at the same time and end up hiking more miles in darkness as it gets later in the season. I think I was ~four miles in before the sun completely cleared the Superstitions on the eastern horizon.

With this being a weekday morning, it was predictably quiet on the trails, with only a handful of mountain bikers and a few more hikers near Dobbin's Lookout. I passed a rattlesnake on National Trail as the sun was coming up, and the only other memorable wildlife was an aggressive ground squirrel that I had to chase off a few times when I stopped for a quick snack break near Fat Man's Pass on the hike out...I felt like I was at the Grand Canyon. I'd never encountered begging ground squirrels at South Mountain, but apparently people feed them here, too.

Near the top of the Holbert spur, a few hundred feet from Dobbin's Lookout, I passed a wooden box sitting on top of a boulder on the trail. It had a picture of a cat on the side and must've been the cremated ashes of someone's pet. Why someone would intentionally leave it sitting out in the open on a busy trail, where it'll quickly be removed or destroyed by the elements remains a mystery. And if someone forgot it there by accident...why were they hiking with cat ashes in first place? That was a first...

Started up Telegraph Pass Trail with Daniela around 0745. A little warmer than expected, and not as many clouds as I was hoping we would have. Oh well. Headed east on National, then north on Holbert up to Dobbins Lookout. Saw a box containing the cremains of a cat from 2008 just below the lookout. Kind of a random place to leave Fluffy. Retraced our steps back to the start. Sunny and hot by the time we finished.

Beautiful summer evening and an incredible sunset to hike out with. There were only a couple other people on the trail but plenty of people up at Dobbin’s Landing. Nice balance of solitude & company.

Hiked Holbert trail (to Dobbins Lookout) with Victoria, Alyssa, and Juan.

This was a return to our normal fitness hikes with a bit of a handicap. Injuries, lack of cardio, and infrequent hiking were issues for various members of the party. Despite the handicaps we did pretty well time-wise.

We got an early start to beat the heat (at the trailhead at around 8:15) which helped a lot.

It was the 1st Sunday of the month so the road to the top was closed which made for a pretty uncrowded trail.

It was a good hike I was not the slowest despite some recent leg injuries, good cardio seems to be more critical lol.

Up Telegraph, then east on National, which was nicely shaded. Quick stop at the old Holbert Lookout. Down Holbert, then west on what I guess is Box Canyon? West on Los Lomitas, up Kiwanis to finish out the loop, then down Telegraph. Lots of people on Kiwanis and Telegraph. Hazy, but cool, and a nice breeze the entire way.

I had a two hour window while my son was at a friend’s hoise nearby, so I figured I could squeeze in Holbert to Dobbins Lookout. Got started a few minutes after 1600 and headed uphill. Warm, but for some reason, I don’t mind late afternoon heat as much as I hate midday heat. Maybe the angle of the sun. Saw one chuckwalla, lots of poorly prepared hikers, and a zoo of people at the lookout. Jogged in some places on the way back down, but managed to arrive to get my kid at exactly the designated pickup time.

With Saturday wide open and my usual hiking partners unavailable this weekend, I decided to do a solo hike at South Mountain, a longer variation on a route that I typically choose. It was in the mid-60s and very comfortable when I started at ~6:30AM and was a lot less busy than I expected for a Saturday Morning at SoMo on a nice day.

I started up Marcos de Niza and and continued along Guadalupe Ridge...I didn't see too many people along that stretch except around Observation Point. From there, I headed into new territory and hiked down Corona de Loma East (Old Man Trail) and over to Corona de Loma Trailhead. Once I was down off the ridge, that part of the hike was flat and not particularly scenic, but there are a lot of nice houses in the neighborhoods over there.

I hiked back up onto the ridge and through Eagle Pass via Corona de Loma Trail...it was fairly steep, with a lot of switchbacks. I saw the waypoint for Chinese Wall on the route but didn't really notice it as I passed...I probably looked right at it and didn't think it looked very wall-like. I'm guessing South Mountain's Chinese wall isn't visible from space :). At Buena Vista Lookout, I headed west for a short out-and-back to Dobbins Lookout before returning and picking up Geronimo Trail and following that down into the residential neighborhoods and over to Mormon Trailhead.

I took a short break there before the final long ascent of the day. It as around noon by that point, and all the other hiker traffic on Mormon Trail was going down, so I didn't have to bother dodging two-way traffic on the way up. I connected with Mormon Loop Trail and then took Javelina and the Ridgeline Trail over to Pima Trail/Beacon Hill and back to the trailhead. It finished it off with a short out-and-back on National Trail since it was still early in the afternoon.

The afternoon got warm but not uncomfortably hot, in the mid-80s when I finished. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary today as far as wildlife, but there were plenty of blooming cacti and ocotillo. South Mountain doesn't offer the most interesting or overwhelmingly beautiful hiking, and certainly not an opportunity to get away from crowds, but it was nice to check out some new trails at my own pace on a solo hike.

Started up Telegraph around 0830 or so. Not many people on the trail. Warm breeze from the southeast. With these temps and wind, California could be on fire by the end of the week.

East on National, which had some nice shade. Side trip on Holbert to Dobbins Lookout. The Natives were selling jewelry in the parking lot. Once back on National, continued east, then down Corona.

Took Corona down to Desert Classic, then west on DC. Side detour on Helipad/Guadalupe Perimeter trail then back on DC to finish out the loop. Saw one trail runner twice—once on National, and once on DC, we were doing almoat the same loop in opposite directions, but I think he started from Warpaint. Warm for the last few miles.

My 4th and final hike of the Phoenix Summit Challenge. This has to be one of my least favorite hikes on SoMo. Very uneven and rocky all the way up. Hard on the already tired legs. Very crowded on the trail because all of the PSC hikers finish on this trail. Nice celebration at the finish with a good band, good trucks and a beer stand from North Mountain Brewing Co. Made the long climb worth it. Phoenix threw a great party.

Hiked Holbert trail with Victoria as a weekend fitness hike.

It was pretty warm so very few people were on the trail.

There was lots of greenery and wildflowers (specifically daisies) from all the monsoon rains and quite a few butterflies as well. We saw several red tailed lizards, some quite large, and what looked like a baby rattlesnake (although he went down a hole in a hurry before we could get a picture).

We did the Dobbins extension instead of the normal route, it was a good weekly fitness hike.
