Night Hike!
Combine sections of three trails for a 12.4 mile Balloon hike:
1. Dixie Mine
2. Pemberton
3. Coachwhip

Started off at dusk (6:30pm) and almost immediately ran into a rattlesnake. :o
Wife wasn't to happy about that... We should have probably started a couple hours later, this time of year, and this time of day is prime time for snakes. We sidestepped the snake, and continued on. No other snakes the rest of the night. Moon was full, but there were quite a bit of clouds in the sky, so it was still relatively dark.
We were keeping a pretty good paste, so finished up at 11:30pm

With a free Sunday and great weather, it was time to take the family out for another hike. I was thinking to take them to the Broadway Cave, but Wally pointed out that the Lost Dutchman Marathon was today, so that idea was out. I wanted to find something I haven't hike or at least recorded and saved on my GPS. Looking thru my records, I noticed that in McDowell Mt Park there is the 168th St spur trail that I didn't have recorded. It's entirely possible that I've never even hiked this trail. If I did, I don't remember it. Out and back from the main trailhead is almost 6.5 miles, perfect.

Everything in the park is still very green from the winter rains. Lots of nice open views of the Mazzies, Four Peaks, Superstitions and Mt. Ord in spots. The 168th St. spur trail is actually pretty nice and underrated. It's obviously more narrow than the Pemberton, but also has a lot more vegetation around it. Not far in we spotted a red tailed hawk sitting on a saguaro, likely looking for an early lunch. I was able to get one picture of it before it flew away. Not long after that, I saw a huge white tail buck just off the trail up ahead of us. I pointed him out to Dmitri just in time before he took when he saw us. I wasn't able to get a picture of him, and Radmila and Natasha missed it. It was at least an 8 point, huge rack, probably the biggest deer I've ever seen in AZ. These 2 wildlife sightings made the day.

Got to the end of the trail and headed back. Made very good time, nearly 3 mph. Saw lots of bikers on the Pemberton, and a few hikers, mostly as we got back to the trailhead. Saw one trail runner on the 168th St spur. Finished just after 11am and beat the lunch rush at DJs Bagel Café in Fountain Hills.

Hiking in McDowell Sonoran Preserve on the weekend? Risky. Might run into lots of folks.
Decided to take a chance, figured we may be able to avoid crowds by doing a hike that doesn't go up the mountains, and the fact that we start break of dawn. For the most part this worked out pretty well, we didn't run into anyone on the trail until we were well on our way back.

We had hiked the Romero Canyon a couple of days prior going up to Romero pass, this was a grueling hike, so I thought a relatively flat short hike would be in order. Combined [Marcus Landslide] along with a section of [Pemberton] and section of [Rock Knob] and [Boulder] to make a 6.7 mile loop trail. GPS route has been uploaded if you want to check it out.

This was actually a really nice hike. A nice casual hike with some really good views. Great sunrise, this time of year is great for that with the common clouds (Terrible for Astronomy). I don't think I would do this hike in the summer, it's completely exposed.

Long trail run loop around Pemberton. I added a couple of extra trails the Lariat and Chuparosa. Really liked the Chuparosa trail which is about 4 mile loop back to Pemberton. Awesome temps and never felt warm even at 2pm finish.

I did it, I made it to 2,500 miles for 2019! My legs were definitely feeling it these past two weeks as I have been averaging almost 10 miles per day in December. Not sure why I was aiming for that number, just sounded like something fun to do to end the year.

Night Hike!
No photos to post for this one, it's to long to drag the tripod along.
Decided this would be a good contender for a night hike since it looks like this is a major biking trail and is quite flat, and well marked.
Started off at 8:50pm and finished up at 1:40am. We did run into a group of about 6 bikers who were night biking with headlamps, but that was the only folks we saw the whole hike. We went counter-clockwise on the hike, and didn't notice any significant elevation gain, but there must have been some, because on the southern part of the loop you do have a gentile decline for a bit.

All-In-All an excellent night hike, but I would hate to be on this hike in the daytime, I expect you would be road kill, you can tell this trail is very popular for mountain bikers.

We combined parts of the following trails to make a 7.2 mile loop. Looks like RoudyandMe pretty much covered the same loop with the exception that he didn't hid the Caballo section of the hike, but tool the Marcus trail segment, a pretty minor deviation on the loop.

We started break of dawn and were rewarded with the reddest sunrise I have ever seen. Over all the hike was OK. Classic flat desert scenery. Pretty good area for birds. Trails were well marked, and extremely easy to follow. You can tell the Pemberton trail is a very popular bike trail. We only ran into one pair of bikers, but that was because it was a Wednesday, and quite early. No other encounters with people on this hike, which kind of surprised me for this area, I think everyone focuses on the mountains at this trailhead, so if you want to avoid the crowds, the flatter hikes to the East and North may be a better option, although the views are not as nice.

On Friday, the 12th, I did a loop hike in MMRP starting from the Four Peaks Trailhead (formerly known as the Horse Staging Area). I hiked Escondido, Pemberton, and Scenic. I passed the intersection with Cinch, planning on going back to Pemberton and down Shallmo Wash. But it was starting to get warm, so I turned back and went down Cinch and back on Escondido.

I saw a few cyclists getting ready to ride at the parking lot, but saw no one else on the trails.

Trails were in good condition. Hiking was easy except for the heat; my GPS watch indicated a higher heart rate than I'd expect to see for the terrain and pace. I'm not as well acclimated as I was last summer.

Wanted to take advantage of the cool weather and wildflower bloom. Kai and I started at Tom's Thumb Trailhead and took Marcus Landslide - Gooseneck - service road 3 - Pemberton - rock knob - ML to TH. Was disappointed in the wildflowers.... does not compare to bloom at Granite Mountain in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Longest hike of the year for me.

Started up at Rio Verde rd. took Gooseneck down to Rock Knob, then left at Pemberton, connector back to Gooseneck, back to trailhead. I really enjoyed gooseneck, this trail had good flow in both directions, in fact this entire loop had good flow. The desert scenery is great right now!

It was a cool and cloudy day, very pleasant for hiking. Recent rain has made things even greener with abundant flowers. Trails were in good condition too.

Ben, Marilyn, Mike, Bob, and Cathy joined me for a twelve and a half mile hike that took us all the way out to Marcus Landslide (starting from the Trailhead Staging Area).

Some of us saw javelina (and ravens) on our drive into the park. Later, during the hike, we saw jackrabbits, coyotes, deer, and more ravens.

We saw lots of flowers too. The poppies are especially thick in the Marcus Landslide area. The closer we got to this trail, the more poppies we saw. We saw brittlebush, lupine, fiddleneck, and owl clover too. The brittlebush seems to be drying up somewhat, whereas the fiddlenecks are just starting to emerge.
