Did a short, early, beat the heat, in-town hike this weekend. One of my favorite loops in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. Most of the harem hadn't been on this loop before, so it was quite the treat. Ambulance was taking someone out when we got there at 5:20. Parking lots are under construction, cars parked everywhere along the entrance road. Trail stewards were doing maintenance on the east side trails. Humidity was up, we were soaked. Post hike treats at Snooze were excellent!

Quick Saturday morning hike to get some exercise. Combined the Quartz Ridge, Mohave Connector, and Mohave Trails to make a loop. I like the little summit up there, not nearly as crowded as Squaw Peak. You can view all the people from here going up and down the summit trail. I dropped down to Mohave Trail #200A and up it's ridge to get a better look at the construction on the parking lots; coming along good! Then, I finished up my hike down Trail 202 Connector past the McMansions and tennis courts. Beautiful part of the trail that doesn't see as many people, but I like it. Even more beautiful in afternoon or evenings. Good alternative to the Hubbub over at Piestawa Summit Trail! :D

haven't done this little hike in awhile
quite a few loop options from 32nd & lincoln trailhead
getting a little tired of beverly canyon hikes so this was a nice change
switching things up: less running, more biking, more emphasis on elevation gain
we'll see
nice afternoon temps, light breeze
not many people out for a saturday afternoon
first slurpee of the year on the way home :)

Aside from the summit the grade is moderate. This loop hits all my favorites. Which includes the summit, west & north circ, #1C, #1B & Ruth out to Quartz and back to Mohave.

The 1.3 mi alternative (#1C-#1A-#1B) vs the standard circ is the highlight of the park. Everything is green but VOAZ #1B is borderline tropical now.

Prob time to check out the billion other trails in the other valley parks & preserves. Yeah we'll see.

Well in my mind, I had planned to hike 8 to 8A to 304 to VOAZ and back across to Tonto Jr via 38th St TH. I ended up hiking to the right of 8 and then 8 up and over to 8B from the east side, two little peaks, 8A over toward 304 but took 1A instead of VOAZ and finished where I had planned.

I had kept watching for the saddle from where I was hiking a non-marked trail and I was confused. I thot when I hit what I thot was LV Yates 8 that I would be heading up to the saddle but it just didn't look right and it wasn't. I came around a corner and saw a couple other hikers on the trail ahead of me. It wasn't until I spotted the saddle to my left (north) that I realized I had traveled on the trail I had always wanted to travel but hadn't gotten around to yet. Sheesh. So essentially I hiked on the west side of the mountain when I should have been on the east ](*,) . Well when I got to the intersection that would take me to the left to the saddle or continue on east, I decided, what the heck, let's see what's over here.

I could hear voices so I know the trail continued for awhile. I had no idea where it went but I could always turn back. Soon it switched to the south as you continued climbing for about 1/4 mile I think. Not a serious climb but it got the heart rate up. I ran into a couple hikers going the opposite way so the trail must come from somewhere. As I come over the hill I see the white house and what looks like an old road to it. It was kind of cool to be so near the house I had admired since back in the early 2000s when I first started hiking this area. The question was, where did the trail go? Would it go around somewhere? NOPE, it went up that road ramp right to the gate.

After admiring the gate and the property and the view to the city, I continued down the paved road still having no idea where I would be going. I decided to go up by a power line to get a better picture of the city and wha la, there is a trail just below me. Well that's good since at this point I had only seen the paved road ahead of me, another road down to the east and then some sort of path behind that back where the gate was I think. So I get down to the trail and see a bench and a sign. Well here is the Ruth Hamilton Trail 8B. Joe had just mentioned it in his trip log a day or two before.

So I continued on the trail and saw that there was a faint trail up to a peak on the left (south) and figuring I would get some great views from there, almost straight up I went. I 360ed it and then saw, aha, another peak to its east that seemed to have a faint trail so what the heck, let's head UP that one too. I'm thinking Kelly would like this, two little peaks at once. The entry to both summits was pretty steep but very short. The view from up here was pretty cool as well and I could look down on lots of other hikers on the trail and saddle below me. The houses down near the 36th St area were pretty fancy (check satellite view). I also did my very first live FB video. It took three tries but I finally figured it out. When I went home to review the video, it was a bit jittery though.

Well that was very cool but now it was time to head down. I would hook up with 8A to go north therefore avoiding the crowds that were to the west. I encountered two hikers going down the hill. I saw a biker in the gully. Speaking of gullies, there were a few of those on the trail today but for the most part, the trails were in pretty decent condition. I was going to head over to 304 and do VOAZ but the breeze seemed to dissipate and my energy level was dropping so I did 1A instead and crossed over to up the green path across 100 and then east and around to 38th St. I had thot of even scratching the green path hill but the cross-breeze motivated me.

Anyway, for the best views, I would definitely do this hike in a clockwise fashion. I will be adding it to my workout hike repertoire. And now for my Q-T Frozen Cappuccino. How did this trip log get so long for a 6 mile city hike? :stop:

I did spot one four o'clock flower going up that first peak. Ocotillos are very leafed out.

Headed in earlier than usual for the summit. A few Fridays ago I switched from a standard neon to a black shirt by chance. Passing remarks rolled in from folks that never acknowledge me. Back to neon today to appease the hecklers... lol

Nice temps so I decided to go check out Ruth for a change. The guide for [ Mohave - Ruth Hamilton Loop ] is spot on but I really enjoyed the clockwise version more than anticipated. Just one hiker on Ruth, a doz on Quartz &
five on the Mohaves. More small town friendly vs that horrible summit trail. Always say I need to hit this more. Rarely do but have a feeling I might walk the talk. Everything is green.

While VOAZ is my fav, there are several stretches on this loop where you are surrounded by mountains with no hint of city. Of course then you walk beside a neighborhood and give back all the serenity... lol

One nice Wild Geranium or similar. Kicking myself for not taking a photo as none have been posted in the Valley.

Nice short after work run. Started from 32nd st. and jogged up to the saddle and then down the north side to the beginning of the Yates Trail. Made a series of right turns that eventually brought me up to the east of the white house and to the end (or in this case, the beginning) of the Ruth B Hamilton Trail. And from there I joined with the Quartz and took that back to the TH. Jogged the whole distance. Not a great time but it felt good doing what I did. :) Usual this is a busy trail, but not today. Only saw 4 hikers while I was out. Weather was nice. Beautiful cumulus clouds building up in the distance that provided no shade. No wildlife.

I really liked enjoyed the giant quartz rock and the peak was fun. I liked how after the peak, everyone else turns around and if you continue to the end of this trail you have it all to yourself. There is lots of connecting trails along here to explore :)

Did the loop c.c. from near-full 32nd St parking lot on a cool sunny afternoon. Plenty of company going up to the Kolbe bench where almost everybody turns around. Little traffic up to the Davis bench and around the W side. At the jct of the Mohave and 202 connector trails, I chose going up the steep hill with the 18 switchbacks rather than to circle around it on the connector. Wanted to make sure I got over 1,000 AEG for the day. Seems early but the ocotillos are putting out lush green leaves.

As it looked more and more promising that magic sky water would actually fall, I decided I wanted to be outside to enjoy what would apparently amount to mostly just a 1-2 hour frontal passage. It seemed to be lingering out in western AZ, so I decided to wait a while for a late start in hopes of catching the rain.

We were still mostly early. The night was great anyway. Low clouds and city lights eliminated the need for headlamps. It was 75 degrees at 8pm on January 10. There was a very nice breeze.

As hoped however, the front finally arrived with fierce winds, a couple of too-close-for-comfort lightning strikes, driving rain, running water, puddles, and all around good times. Managed to get back to the parking lot after wading through a few shallow rivers and captured the requisite selfie. Somehow the parking lots were totally empty.

I will never understand why people here bitch about the lack of rain all the time and yet don't take advantage of it when it actually happens.

There was finally some rain in the forecast that was coming into the valley around 8-9pm. So Chumley and I met over by Squaw Peak and decided to make the Circ Loop and extended it around to the Quartz Trail. The first 5+ miles were dry but we could see rain off to the west. It slowly worked its way over to us and started raining as we hiked back on the Mohave Connector Trail. The skies opened and a solid rain fell. Flashes of lightning illuminated the area which was really cool and not scary. We completed the loop and were soaked even with rain gear. Felt great hiking in the rain again!

Decided to take a trip up 8A to the top of the ridge for the first time in about ten years. The trail was as I remembered it, nice to see that the big rock has not moved. The ascent was a little laborious but not too bad. Though I was not happy to see the section where there is a lot of stepping up which means stepping down on the way back. Not my favorite thing to do. The overcast day did not make for great views. The trail was moderately busy and the weather was nice today.
