| partners | | Ive been wanting to do this ATV loop for a few years now and with Vicky in town, the day after Christmas was the one. I knew it would be a long loop so the best approach was from Bloody Basin Rd. We left the truck about 10 and made our way to fr 677. We took that north to Dugas. Nothing to exciting about this leg. Made it to Dugas and headed for the rim. Dugas seems like it has a lot of fun trails leading off of it so im sure ill go back to explore. At this point it started to get pretty chilly as we climbed and the wind picked up. The last mile or so was pretty slow going. The rim gave way to some awesome views of the rugged valley below. From the rim it was ~6 miles and over 3000 feet down to the verde. I chose to go clockwise on the loop so I could test going down before up. It would definitely take an atv or 4x4 truck you didn't care about to get up since snow was present on most of the top portion. We stopped by verde hot springs for the first time but unfortunately it was occupied and getting late in the day. And we were only half way! My favorite stretch was 57 south to the 16. Its not frequently traveled, rough, and beautiful. We hit the 16 and cruised back to bloody basin road as princess Vicky grew tired Almost running over some Javelina on the way brought the life back to her. The sun had set as we got to the truck about 6. It was a solid 8 hours and 110 miles of trail. Pretty impressive for a machine that weighs 650lbs, carried 2 people, and only hold 4 gallons of gas. Go Honda!
I sense an overnight quad trip in the near future. |
