| no partners | | Last Sunday we were parked at V Lazy Y Cabin and spent the day wandering the area, which we frequently do at this time of year. When we got back to the truck and having sodas I went to look at the water pump by the water tank. I noticed that scratched into the side of the tank was "New Meteor Crater Found" and ".23 miles across"...WTH? The next day I went onto Google Earth and there it was, a perfect circle in the middle of a mesa. So the web searching begins and I learned a famous discovery of a 135# meteorite wrapped as a baby in a Sinagua site.

This article is dated in 09 and they think it came from the Canyon Diablo site, but did they know of the crater 15 miles east? As of yet I've found lots of info on meteorites found in Native sites, but nothing yet on this meteor site.
So Thursday we went back and parked at the cabin. I had studied GE and decided even though a road went right to it from the SW, we'd bushwhack in from the SE along a ridge to get an overview of the site. We agreed that we could be in the crater and not know it, how true this would become. We couldn't find the crater (.23 miles wide hole seems a tad difficult), but I knew it was due south of Rock Tank and that was easy to find. So we went a couple of hundred yards south from the tank and........huh? We wondered back to the road to the shade of a juniper tree to see if we could get a Sat photo. Yep we're looking at the crater. We started at about 7 o'clock on the crater and moved counter clockwise. Slowly we realized there was this rock edge and we followed it. As in the Sat photo you'll notice a stronger growth of trees along the edge, which meant not having a clear view across the crater. I said to the Mrs. if we keep going in a circle then we'll know we're at the right place. Well it's a crater all right, but boy howdy you can be right in it and not know it.
In my opinion some chain saws, napalm and a million gallons of Roundup and we'll have a real money maker here. It's still pretty cool and since we like hiking this area anyway, it's just another treat. |
