We drove out to Death Valley at 0-dark-thiry and got started hiking before the sun even hit Telescope Peak. Good idea on a sunny day, because I would not have wanted to do that approach hike in full sun. The approach starts almost 300 feet below sea level, ending at 1,900 feet above within one mile. The timid need not apply for this one, as the ridge traverse is steep and airy, and full of loose, crumbly, unstable rock.

Come to think of it, the canyon was lots of loose, crumbly, unstable rock, too. Oddly, it looks as if the canyon cannot possibly maintain itself and the walls might collapse at any moment. Possibly a little unsettling if you were already nervous. The rappels were nice and this was an overall enjoyable canyon. As a bonus, the canyon exit is just a few minute walk from the cars. In the end, though, there are other canyons on my list here before repeating this one.

Anchors were all in pretty good shape, although we did have a bit of a head-scratcher moment over the use of a huge nut to anchor one rappel. First, who would even carry such a large size through a canyon? Secondly, there were plenty of rocks easily available for a cairn anchor, as was used throughout the rest of the canyon. Weird.

The early species are starting to bloom! Needs more rain, but it's shaping up to be a fairly good year out there.
