Climbing up, the humidity from a big thunderstorm the day before, combined with the increasing temperature as the day wore on made this hike hotter'n hell! Once on top, we explored around the top of the mountain, checking out "Al Senner's camp", where I'd camped back in February 1996. The highlight of this hike for me was laying on my stomach, looking over the south cliff of the Flatiron, and seeing 3 bighorn sheep bounding over the steep desert slopes 500 feet below me. Hiking down the last couple shadeless miles below the waterfall, at 1:00 in the afternoon, in 105 degree weather, was complete hell! Stopped at the Goldfield ghost town/museum on the way back and bought a copy of "Al Senner's Lost Gold Of Superstition Mountain" booklet. For Flatiron fans, this book is a must-read. |
