High clearance but no 4WD drive neeeded to get to mining camp south of Red Picacho. Two open shafts going down at 45 degrees in the hillside. Followed slope towards Picacho, circling the summit mesa in a clockwise direction to the saddle on the east side. There was snow and icicles on the saguaro, and low-flying clouds came and went, completely blocking visibility at times. The last 40 feet or so was maybe 5.5 climbing with significant exposure. The rock was wet and cold, so I passed. Descended the southeast slope, somewhat steep and loose, with cholla and catclaw. I hate catclaw almost as much as cholla. An abandoned camper shell at the camp read "**** Star Trailer - Directed by S.C. and Pimp Daddy". Nice.
Came back on Picacho wash 4WD trail. Awesome narrow canyon with great geology and fairly clear. High clearance and 4WD necessary. Opened to smooth, sandy wash joining graded road back to Carefree highway. Wild Burrow on the way out. A perfect day! |
