This trail heads straight down on switchbacks, in forest, to where it opens up in the Purgatory Flats area on Cascade Creek. This is a popular area for overnight camping, or as a rest stop for those hikers going on to the Animas River Trail (see Animas River Trail Sheet #675). Plenty of water is available, but purification is recommended to avoid Giardia. It may also be necessary, depending on the time of the year, to ford Purgatory Creek to reach the flats.Purgatory Flats is a historical grazing area and cattle may be encountered at any time. It is also a good area for bird watching, and numerous species may be spotted from Spring until Fall.
When hiking several trails on a single "hike", log it with a generic name that describes the hike. Then link the trails traveled, check out the example.
