The area to the west of the campgrounds was badly burnt in 2002 and it had not recovered as of 2012. The area north of Old Hwy-260 was also badly burnt; the trailhead has been moved to its current position. This path passes stands of Ponderosa pines, pinyon & juniper woodlands, and several varieties of cactus.
The trail from the north trailhead is one mile long. The loop from the west trailhead is 4 miles long.
The elevation of the trail varies from 6,400' to 6,500'.

To hike From Show Low drive west on 260; turn onto Pinedale Road; drive south past the small community to a Y in the road. The north trailhead: take a left turn onto Old Hwy-260, the parking lot is on the right. To access the west trailhead: go straight ahead to the Lewis Canyon Group Campgrounds. After checking in with the campground host and drive midway around the outer loop to the small parking lot, the trailhead is on the right.
