Not As Easy As it Looks... by imike If you are at the Mescalero Apache Indian Casino outside of Ruidoso, and you feel like you need to stretch your legs without making a big production of setting up to hike in the woods, You're in Luck. Walk out the doors... head to the upper end of the lake... and past all the buildings; cross the road to the upper parking lot (where they park the RV's)... and you will find yourself at the clearly labeled paved walkway. This is a walking path with exercise/training intervals. You can mix in the pushups... setups... stretches... etc at the assorted workout stations along the trail. Or, just use the course to clock a nice 10K run. If you do the full out and back you will score that distance. It is not flat. Some mild hills... some steeper hills. All total, it will work you out. If it has been raining, you're still in luck: Paved the Entire Length! You will likely have the trail to yourself; it gets very little use. It follows the roadways for its entire length. You will not be off and away, but you are often walking/running under some nicely shaded areas. For some that may be reassuring. All in all, this is an enjoyable route. If you are there, put it to use! Winter Time: Snow Covered! Take Your Snowshoes! Check out the Triplogs. Leave No Trace and +Add a Triplog after your hike to support this local community.
