South Fork Kootenai Trail #53 is a 1.25 mile one way hike with 440 feet accumulated elevation gain. Located 27 miles southwest of Missoula Montana. Trailhead access is via a dirt road which is typically car accessible when dry. July and August are the best months to enjoy this hike.

The Hike
The South Kootenai Lake Trail #53 branches off the main Kootenai Creek Trail at the intersection for South and North Kootenai Lakes at a little over the 11 mile mark. After crossing its outlet stream, the trail immediately passes the Middle Fork Lake of the Kootenai group and then begins a modest climb and contour to South Kootenai Lake. At the time of this description the trail to South Kootenai was overgrown and a significant blow down area right before the lake had wiped out a large portion of the trail.

Check out the Official Route.
