Mabamba Swamp or Mabamba Bay is a wetland on the edge of Lake Victoria, northwest of the Entebbe. Mabamba is one of Uganda's 33 Important Bird Areas and since 2006 a Ramsar-listed wetland of international importance. Key protected bird species in Mabamba are the shoebill, the blue swallow and the papyrus gonolek. Most go to see the shoebill, which is a large dinosaur-like bird with a huge bill.
Mabamba Swamp is a tourist place, where you pay a guide to take you around the swamp and through the channels of the swamp to search out birds. It's much cheaper to go there on your own then by booking online.
Booking online can go for about $200 to $250. Costs to take a guided tour upon arrival costs 100,000 UGX ($27) plus a small park fee. Tour takes about an hour to 90 minutes. Leave No Trace and +Add a Triplog after your birding observation to support this local community. |
