Eye of the Smoke

On the island of Kauai in Hawaii, the Makauwahi Cave Reserve is a unique and underrated hike. It offers a blend of history, natural beauty, and scientific discovery.

The Makauwahi Cave Reserve is a limestone cave system on the southern coast of Kauai and covers about 17 acres. This reserve (Not sure why Hawaiians call them reserve and not preserve) is home to many fossils, including those from extinct bird species like the moa-nalo and the stilt owl. These fossils have provided valuable insights into the prehistoric wildlife of Hawaii.

If you are unable to crawl on your hands and knees (on carpet) to enter the cave system, you'll have to enjoy it from above. One of the most intriguing aspects of this reserve is the massive sinkhole called "Makauwahi," which is often referred to as the "Garden Isle's Window to the Past." I wondered why I saw one of those life preserver hoops inside when entering. This sinkhole exposes layers of sediment and fossils that date back thousands of years, offering an unparalleled opportunity for scientific research.

As you journey through and around the reserve, you'll also see lush gardens and unique plant species, creating a serene and magical atmosphere.

There is no required entry fee, but they do suggest a donation. It is only open between 10 am and 4 pm, so plan accordingly.

You can also tie this visit in with the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail, which is nearby.
