History
Kennedy Gold Mine holds a significant place in the history of the California Gold Rush. Its story begins in 1856 when gold was first discovered in the area by Andrew Kennedy. This discovery sparked a gold rush, leading to the establishment of the Kennedy Mining Company in 1860. The mine quickly became one of the richest gold mines in California, producing over $34 million worth of gold during its operation. Despite facing challenges such as labor disputes and declining gold yields over the years, the Kennedy Gold Mine continued to operate until 1942 when it was shut down due to World War II. Today, the Kennedy Gold Mine is preserved as a historic site and offers guided tours, allowing visitors to step back in time and explore the rich history of California's gold mining industry. Overview Beautiful loop hike around the Kennedy Mine property, a California Historic Landmark gold mine that operated from about 1850 to 1942. The hike follows single track and dirt roads through oak and open meadows passing old mine structures and equipment. Both free (self-guided) and paid guided above-ground tours of the property are available, offering lots of interesting history. The loop hike can be done for free when the property is open to the public.
The mine is open on weekends only from March through October. Early spring is green and cool, summers are dry and hot. Also related is the nearby Kennedy Tailing Wheels city park with more interesting mining history. Check out the Triplog.
