This was the second hike of our first day in the Bitterroots. Initially we had planned to only go to the falls, but the lure of the lake was too much and we finished the final climb to the lake.

The trail was a little more difficult than we had expected mainly due to a little over growth, some swampy sections and a pretty steep little climb at the end to the lake. We were also only expecting 8 miles, but the falls ended up being a little farther than posted and by the time we got to the viewing point of the impressive falls, we decided the lake was too close not to visit. The lake ended up being worth it. Canyon Lake is a very large and scenic lake with a great backdrop. The only draw back was the outlet of the lake, which has been dammed off, like so many of the Bitterroots Lakes. Most of the dams are not longer operational, but this one still was. The stored water is essential for the valley below and released during dry stretches late in the season to augment crop irrigation and etc. After a quick break at the lake, if was back to the trailhead. The final couple miles seemed to drag on a bit due to a little fatigue and hunger, so needless to say we were happy to get back to our vehicle full of goodies around 8.
