A Gem and a Trail of History
by The_Eagle

Overview
The Diamond Head Crater Trail is a piece of Hawaii's history, natural beauty, and an enjoyable hike.

History
Around 300,000 years ago, Diamond Head was a towering volcano, which, through years of erosion and volcanic activity, evolved into the crater seen today. The name "Diamond Head" was given by 19th-century British sailors who mistook calcite crystals embedded in the lava rocks for diamonds.

Hike
The trail, takes you through a 225-foot-long tunnel built in 1908, highlighting the site's historical importance during World War II. This tunnel once served as a military lookout, protecting the Hawaiian coast against potential threats.

At the summit, you will find breathtaking views of Waikiki, Honolulu, and the Pacific Ocean.

If you take the lasso loop clockwise you will enter the Pillbox and head down a spiral staircase. Then down 99 steps to reach where you exited the tunnel previously.
