Re: Gila NF near Alma, NM / Mogollon mtns
https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DO ... 606330.pdf is a good 2018 forest service reference guide for trail conditions. That said 2 years ago did the upper section of the middle fork trail from snow lake and it was darn near impassable with log jams from flash flooding.

I was bitten by a rattlesnake in the ankle while using a chainsaw on my ranch. Couldn’t hear it and stepped backward into a bush. What saved me was that I was in the ER in less than 10 minutes. I drove very fast. I quit counting antivenin vials at 20 because I was in a morphine fog. Very painful. Th...

Re: Rabies Exposure
From a veterinarian’s perspective. This is exactly why all dogs and cats should be vaccinated for rabies and licensed. If you dog had any contact with a potentially rabid animal and is current on his rabies vaccination it should be immediately re-vaccinated for rabies to boost its immunity. If not v...

Couple of questions. Can you get a horse trailer into Rogers trail head? I have a 23 foot trailer with a 4x4 diesel and a fair amount of guts behind the wheel. Has anyone seen a horse\-trailer in there before? How is the trail ? My mules are the 4x4 version of the equine world but don't do well boul...

Re: Hiking pain and pill popping
My joints gave out years ago from thousands of miles hiking and backpacking. Drugs and weight loss could not overcome the pain, so rather than living vicariously through the pages and pictures of hike az.com I became a Mule rider. Now I can reach the back country with no problem with minimal amounts...

No, just he Wilderness of Rocks, Lemmon Loop. Most of the time we can find a off trail route around or get off and rock hop with the mule. Downed trees are a pain which is why we always carry a saw.

My mule “Rosie” and I have ridden the Wilderness of Rocks trail looping around to the Lemmon trail many times. Yes there is some rock climbing with some slick spots, but mules are the four wheel drive version of the equine world. They are half donkey and from that they get their intelligence and are...

I have ridden a few sections of the and overnight packed few, including the Grand Canyon. I pack a lot and would recommend only one pack animal. Lot easier to feed, pony and makes mule management much easier. I pack like a backpacker ie as light as possible, carry pelleted feed and steak hobbles to ...

Re: Wierd Tree Pattern
Range management is my best guess. Cows eat grass and grass doesn’t grow under trees. Ranchers use bulldozers to knock the trees down so the grass will grow and they can feed more cows. Sometimes they link two bulldozers together with a large chain or cable and make wide swaths up and down hills. Th...

I did the Grand Canyon on my personal mule with a pack string of 4 pack mules. It was quit an adventure…. There was a back country ranger in charge of equines that we made contact with to get the permits to enter with our own stock. At the time they only permitted mules, not horses , although that m...

I did a 45 miler on the Skyline trail in the Pecos. Awesome country with lots of water and campsites. June is a great month because the monsoons in the high country can make it infinitely more difficult and dangerous. Lots of bighorn sheep and elk when we went.

Was there last weekend and pulled a 23 ft horse trailer with a pickup truck and made it with no problem. Parked about a mile and a quarter past the "official" trailhead, near where the trail enters the canyon. Streams were running about 3-6 inches so unless they have a flash flood your gol...

Notice how everyone jumping on the "get your knees looked at" is 50ish age range. That’s because we all thought we were invincible in our 20’s and screwed up our joints and now have to live with the consequences. I can only hike a few miles with massive amounts of Motrin and went through w...

I was planning a pack trip up the west fork a few weeks ago and called the cliff dwellings visitor center 575-536-9344 and talked to their back country ranger "Mike" and he said the trails were in good shape. It might be worth a phone call to see if things have changed.

I posted this previously on a similar thread. I have to admit that I am biased toward keeping the mules in the Grand Canyon. I have both hiked and ridden my mule to the bottom of the Grand Canyon.. Mules are responsible for building the Bright Angle and South Kaibab trail. First as a mining claim an...

The rattlesnake vaccine does not provide protection against the Mojave Rattlesnake. To quote their website: "This vaccine does not provide protection against the Water Moccasin (Cottonmouth), Mojave Rattlesnake or Coral Snakes. A picture of the snake will do just fine. It really does not matter...
