Re: Backpack Tax

"No one likes to give more money to the federal government, but if we want to protect the lands that give us joy and freedom, we should be willing to pay." This is the last line of the article which truly upsets me. The second you pay to set foot on a piece of land you are not free, the second you p...

Re: SAR Volunteer

As a former MCSOMR member I would recommend that you do the following; build up your hiking stamina with a 50lb pack, you'll carry a lot of gear half the time out there, know how to use a compass and be able to read topo maps, start to become familiar with pulley systems and knots for rope systems. ...

The roads out there are not bad, no higher risk of a flat than anywhere else.

Re: Arizona Movies

Circle K where Bill & Ted were teleported And much more too. For example, when Genghis Khan totally ravaged the Oshman's Sporting Goods ... that was all filmed at Metrocenter. Back when that was the only real mall in the valley (having dethroned the outdated Christown). In fact Metrocenter still lo...

Re: 27.5" tire size bikes

Not sure how much you are looking to spend, but if you go the 27.5 route you should look into the models Cannondale offers. The Jekyll and Trigger models are pretty amazing bikes with great handling and comfort with good component setup out of the box.

Re: Sierra Estrella Ridgeline

Having done the Estrella ridgeline myself, I would give the advice of expecting it to be longer and harder than you think, if you plan an 8 hour day, do not be surprised if it takes 10-12 hours.

Re: Climber, Biker, Hiker?

The Savants were good, but as usual a company gets rid of a good product and continues to sell an over priced one that most people hate but still think they need. The water tennie has been good to me, but nothing to wear on an all day trip. I'm just not a big fan of five ten shoes anymore.

Re: Have any of you ever overnighted in the Hieroglyphics

You'll be fine camping out there. The burros might wake you in the night if they are near as they are loud when they start yakking. Drunk atv'ers are another aspect you'll most likely encounter but don't worry about them or anything and enjoy the desert.

Re: Sun Glasses UV Protection

I wear any brand I can get without paying too much and never look at any UV rating. Without sunglasses my eyes are just too sensitive to the sun. They have always seemingly been that way, but especially more so after I had lasik eye surgery done. But I do always have to take them off at certain spot...

Forget using anything on the computer to identify and do it the right way, head out there again, see it, hike up it, and confirm what it is from the summit register. ;)

Re: North Mountain Brewing Company

Just so everyone knows, Saddle Mt. Brewery is now open. Not that anyone should need a reason to hike in the Estrellas, but this is the perfect recovery spot to go afterwards. Great people, great brews, great place. When a place opens up with a flyover from taildragger planes (yes it happened), you k...
