Re: Weird urban wildlife sighting
Hey hazers, I live in southern Cave Creek. I've seen coyotes dozens of times around Dynamite and Tatum, and running cross Cave Creek Road north of Pinnacle Peak. About a month ago I saw 7 javalinas crossing Deer Valley Road just east of 7th Street (the only time I have seen javalinas since I've been...

BACKPACKER MAGAZINE- FREE!
Hey,
Does anyone want a whole box of backpacker magazines? There is about a year's worth- up till last months issue, I think.
I'm moving and they are free- just have to pick them up (near South Mountain- pm me for the address if you are interested).
I'm throwing them out on Friday.
Mike

Gear for Sale
Hey folks, Been quite a while since I have been on the site. I've had about all the life changes I can stand. Anyway, I have some gear I'm trying to sell, thought I would put it up to see if anyone is interested. Please pm me if you have interest, I think I can still remember how it works. Joe- site...

Definately wasn't green- although I guess it could have been bleached from the sun. Joe's description was adequate- looked like very thin saturated paper. I can't say tactically, cuz I didn't touch. Do Fremonts even produce the tell-tale Cottonwood "Fluff"? Honestly, I don't think I have ever seen a...

Liz- that book was called Angels in the Wilderness, by Amy Racine. I haven't read Death in the Grand Canyon, but I have read Death in Yellowstone. Man some people have no common sense! I mean- to try and put your kid on a buffalo for a picture- even I will only go so far for a shot! The stories abou...

Into Thin Air got me started on reading a slew of adventure/survival non-fiction. I think Black Sun reveals much more about Abbey personality, although Desert Solitare is of course much more popular. Running the Amazon by Joe Kane is an awesome read. Sandstone Spine: First Traverse of Comb Ridge is...

Snakes Snakes!!
I think the Supes are supposed to be good for rattlers- 'specially in the late spring. I ran into a beautiful diamondback right in West Boulder Canyon last Spring- my first encounter. We saw one little baby coiled up and half frozen last April around Waputki. I also was buzzed a few times- in the da...

Shoes and boots
I have incredibly flat feet as well. My feet have "spread" it seems- I'm up to a 13 wide (my normal every day shoe a year ago was a 12). I wear Vasque Breezes and love them- although I haven't done much really rough off trail desert hiking- they might pick up some spines through the mesh. I've tried...

Hi Sonia, If you are truly interested in hiking- the last thing you want to do is scrimp on shoes or boots. If there is anything in the hiking gear category that you want to be careful with- its your footwear! Your boots are gonna take you places, and you definately want to make sure they bring you ...

Here's an experience
Here's an experience I haven't forgotten... Freedom stands on the slick rock In the red dust blue morning And leaves no footprints But stretches yoga-style The asleep-in-the-dew-rice-cake-morning position Pointing at God with a skyward finger Left foot against right leg Armpit hair waving like burnt...

Well, that just gives me ANOTHER reason to hike Baldy again! I've hiked it twice and didn't go to this summit you are describing either time. I came close my first hike- I took a spur trail to the top and came out about 100 yards from the bald spot. I think Randy, Clark and I would have done it the ...

In response to Matt Hoffman's reply: Wow- thanks Matt! I appreciate the compliment! I've been given a wealth of tips- from Randy, Trish, Joe...plus reading a lot of books and internet sites. I'm also poised to take a couple of upcoming two day workshops. Hiking has kinda "opened up" an interest in ...
