Camping with children
I'm planning on taking my 16 month old daughter on her first camping trip. I have it planned out to drive to Joshua Tree and car camp. Does anyone have any advice to share with a novice family camper?

Re: Where to take 3-yr old on first overnight?
There's a campground in Show Low called Fool's (it's actually a state park). I car camp there every year before a golf tournament- I love the place. It has showers, a nice size resevoir, a little playground, and easy driving into town or other hiking spots. I'm planning on taking my daughter this ye...

not in any particular order... Little Bear Kendrick Peak Aubineau/Bear Jaw Kachina watch out for lightning, double check for overnight camping, never backpacked these, but these were a few of my favorite trails back in the day- and when all is said and done, and you're on your way home, stop in town...

I never thought I'd say this.. but I gotta defend Phoenix. As a Flagstaff resident through the 90's, my hiking heart will always be with the north country. I mean, for two years, I was able to commute to work using my mountain bike on true single track! Nothing beats that! The trails leaving out of ...

I really like the Pemberton Trail at McDowell Mountain Reg. Park ($5 fee), about 16 miles, good, steady grind up and fun whoop-de-whoops for the last 4-5 miles back to the trailhead..there are some others out there too where you can link a couple of trails together to make a ride any length or diffi...

Boat Liscense
I'm new to kayaking and was looking to take a day trip soon. I'm starting simple, I have a Sevylor inflatable and was hoping to hit Canyon Lake. Does anyone know if I need any liscenses? And, if so, where can I get them?

Okay, okay, I know this is hikearizona.com, and everything I've seen so far on posts and post topics has been about arizona, but I thought I'd take a flyer on getting some help from such an experienced, friendly, cyber-community. I'm going to Alaska for a week and a half in late June. I plan on visi...

In response to kajjer's reply: If you're going south, may I recommend a hiking/camping excursion in the Chirichuachuas (I don't know about the spelling there, phoneticly, cheery-cowas).. pretty amazing place in the very SE corner of AZ, a lot of history and some incredible hikes and views.. goodluc...

Just wondering... Did you get out to Reavis? I was thinking of heading out that way in the next few weeks... my brother moved down from Montana and he wants to hit the wilderness... is it swimmable?

Re: names and such
In response to GTG's reply: thanks for the idea, i couldn't find the name you were referrring to, so i googled origin of squaw peak From our Mohawk elders we learned that the word "squaw" derived from the Mohawk word "otsikwaw" which means "female genitalia." Early Eur...

In response to Trans tech's reply: yikes, I didn't think this forum on the re-naming to Piestewa Peak would devolve into name-calling and political posturing. Nobody ever said or implied that one soldier's sacrifice was more noble or worthy than another. Any true soldier would say the same thing (I...

In response to Trans tech's reply: Dude, call it whatever you want, you may view it as a political play (which is a sad argument, especially considering everything else, politically, that's going on), I think your incorrect on that, but, if we're going to call it anything, maybe we should find out ...

In response to Trans tech's reply: I agree with AZhikr, my experiences with Natives Americans and my friends who are Native Americans tell me that most find it offensive, but just don't speak out about it... I don't see anything wrong with calling it Piestewa Peak... If we're going to use Native Am...

I don't know if the peaks will be accesible by the time you are here... I was up in Flagstaff earlier this week and there is still a considerable amount snow on the Peaks (they received close to 450" this season). I'd find another hike. Sorry.[/i]
