Re: 2021 Fire Season

@Jim_H
No point really. Just thought it was an interesting background, so I thought others might find it interesting as well. Cal Tech is a pretty impressive place from which to earn a degree, then to end up like she has.

"...she was a doctoral student at State University of New York's New York College of Environmental Sciences and Forestry"

Also read elsewhere that she has a degree from Cal Tech.

@chumley
I saw a mini Cooper on that road a few years ago. Pretty far in, too. Pretty amazing. By "pretty amazing", I mean, it's pretty amazing how stupid humans can be.

@chumley
Hoping you are correct and the burn isn't too bad. Crummy start to the fire season either way. Here's hoping the folks who are living in the area are safe and can return soon to undamaged homes.

Re: 2021 Fire Season

This really sucks. Viirs & Modis are showing the Telegraph fire right up on the southern edge of Picketpost; most of AZT #17 affected.

Re: Mask Mandate On Federal Lands?

This is from the executive order, it says should all wear mask, does not say shall. also refers back to CDC guidelines. Well the "should" part comes only in Section 1, the "policy" part of the order. Section 1 is really just outlining the rationale for the order. Section 2 is where it gets a bit mo...

@DixieFlyer
LOL not my job to enforce anything. In fact if you see another maskless hiker out there it just might be me.

Re: Mask Mandate On Federal Lands?

@Jim_H I don't think anyone can link to the order until it gets posted by the White House. Probably will be available tomorrow. As for the term "federal property and lands", I don't understand the confusion. The President's coordinator of coronavirus response Jeff Zients said that mask use will be ...

Re: The Great American Outdoors Act

Perhaps Instead of a $35 for 7 days for a car load at Grand Canyon or Zion, Make it a daily fee of something like $15 per person. $75 per day just to get in the door, for a family of 5 trying to cobble together a vacation and visit some national parks that their taxes allegedly help pay for? I'm so...

Kelty Trekker ***SOLD***

Very good condition, everything works great, minor cosmetic scratches on the bottom legs. Great for heavy haulers and hunters. $35.

I am in the Ahwatukee area. Pick up at my house or I could meet you somewhere close by.

The Hike Book

Just received an email from the publisher of Phoenix Magazine advertising a new book they are selling called The Hike Book. 228 of their favorite Arizona trails. Wondering if any members of Hike AZ know anything about it. Might be useful for pathologically solo hikers like myself (to know which trai...

I'm fighting a head cold, holding out until later this afternoon to see how I am doing, to commit or cancel. Likely a cancel though, unless I get a dramatic improvement.

Re: Home owner yelling at hiker on Hawes Trail Loop Mesa AZ

I have noticed this kind of thing happening at South Mountain. Some homeowners near Kyrene de las Lomas Elementary School are building big fenced lots into the open land next to their properties - one is a pickleball court for god's sake. I assume the land is technically theirs, I don't really know....

Looks like decent potential for some rain on Friday in SE AZ at least. 20% chance of t-storms Rincons/Mt. Graham. 40% for Chiracahuas. Per NOAA. I am seeing 10%'s up on the rim.

Re: Smart Outdoor Watch-What do you wear?

I am using the Gear S3 Frontier also. It is certainly not a full on hardcore GPS watch. I used to own a fenix 3, which if I were wanting a hardcore outdoor watch would do back to that line. I use my phone for GPS so really don't need that functionality on a watch. Otherwise, the Gear S3 has reasonab...

Re: delorme inreach

I got the inReach Mini yesterday, took it out today for a 17 mile test run. Works really well, pretty nice little device. It is reasonably small, just hangs essentially unnoticed on my pack. I am mainly using the phone app for the messaging, which works very well. I like the confirmation that a mess...
