Why not do the Canyon if you've never been to AZ?
You might be able to pick up a walk in permit for some campgrounds, I can't imagine they're sold out during a cold holiday weekend. Even if they are you could just do a rim-river-rim hike...you said you liked the intense stuff right?

Rock Climb / Rappel Class
At different times, people have posted questions about learning to rock climb / rappel. Well, the Arizona Mountaineering Club has its Fall class starting up next week. This is a great group of professionals to learn the proper (and safe) techniques from: http://www.azmountaineeringclub.org/main/clas...

One thing I never forget to bring is a large brimmed hat! Behind Australlia, Arizona is second in the world when it comes to skin cancer. If I've got an early morning start or late evening finish, I'll just put it in my pack, but any other time during the day I've got it on my head. They don't weigh...

Great web page Billy. I believe you've gotten to the heart of the matter...do you believe in God's Word or do you not. If you do, then the Word is clear on the subject of homosexuality. The Scouts are specific in what their value system is, as evidenced by the Scout Oath: On my honor I will do my be...

We don't agree with the Scouts policy toward gays. It's not right, and it's discriminatory. I know, I know, they are a private organization and can set their own rules, and that's their choice. But I have a hard time with the idea of supporting an organization with that type of attitude toward peop...

I'm surprised that this even comes up as a topic. Are the Boy Scouts a good thing? Have you looked around the country lately? These are some of the few groups left that teach kids such lofty life principles as: integrity, leadership, honesty, trust, goal setting, respect, teamwork, leadership (have ...

Re: Off-Trail
If you are a knowledgeable and a responsible hiker, Get Off Trail. If you're a knowledgeable and responsible hiker...please stay ON the trail. Let's all be role models for the other uneducated and irresponsible hikers that: cause erosion, tear up vegetation, leave trash around, and generally add mo...

My parents told me about someone they knew in Sierra Vista, AZ that died from a rattle snake bite about 9 months ago. He was the owner of the Mesquite Tree restaurant for anyone familiar with the area. It was a small (baby) rattler in his garage that he picked up by the tale to get it out (didn't kn...

I just did the AMC's Basic class, Anchors class last fall, then last month I did their Crevasse rescue class. This club's instructors and trip leaders are superb! Their number one goal in each class has been teaching safety and proper techniques. Their instructors/leaders have been in the climbing c...

All good points (above 2 posts). Besides the whole debate on renaming for Piestewa, what's got me bothered is the way the Governor is politizing this thing...she just asked for the resignation of Tim Norton, the chairman of the Arizona State Board on Geographic and Historic Names!?!? For what!?!? Al...
