@herdbull
That's interesting. Thanks for taking the time to explain some of the details. I often wonder if in some counties that don't have a very good search and rescue dept. or team, if having a Spot or Garmin would be of much use at all. Who's going to come for you?

Which map? I have Trails Illustrated Natl Geo, but on the lake I use two I recommend: Lake Powell South and LP North, by Fish-n-map company. https://www.fishnmap.com/

Re: Article: Exploring the lower San Juan River formerly under Lake Powell

@RedRoxx44 I think some people from the Southern Arizona paddlers Club out of Tucson went to Gregory Arch this September but I was paddling the Meander Canyon of the Colorado River at the time. I always make my plans six or eight months in advance, and they make theirs only about 3 months in advanc...

@chumley
Oh harhar!

More seriously, it is for this that I am interested in getting a true expedition sea kayak, 17 feet, that will hold 3 weeks worth of supplies. A friend of mine has one she wants to sell. I will drool over it, and maybe I'll buy it.

Re: Article: Exploring the lower San Juan River formerly under Lake Powell

@RedRoxx44 I believe the San Juan Arm is pretty far from anywhere. I have friends who have paddled there and I have other friends who tried to paddle there and it was just too far from Halls crossing. (They made it to the confluence, but then a big wind storm came up and they ran out of food becaus...

Article: Exploring the lower San Juan River formerly under Lake Powell

Some beautiful landforms are being revealed along the lower San Juan River as Lake Powell's water recedes. A group of river runners, BLM rangers, USGS scientists and an archaeologist went to take a look. https://medium.com/river-talk/an-expedition-down-the-lower-lower-san-juan-river-with-returning-r...

Re: RFP North Rim Lodge. etc.

@chumley Did you see the announcement that they are looking for a new concessionaire to take over and rebuild everything on the North Rim to the park's specifications? Very expensive. Apparently, Aramark declined to renew. Somehow I missed this story. https://www.nps.gov/grca/learn/news/business-op...

I recall walking all the way to S. Bass from Toltec without resupply of water. (We had come down to Toltec via Royal Arch Creek via Pt. Huitzil route, and the rappel.)

Re: Hiking vehicles

I live in a 34-foot motorhome full time, but I don't really travel much in it. Just back-and-forth from the desert to Flagstaff. I move it twice per year. Last year, for a cross-U.S. car camping trip in the fall, I purchased a very sturdy 4-person Eureka outfitter tent, plus a propane heater for it....

Re: Tucson hiker attacked by bees on Pontatoc Ridge Trail

@PrestonSands According to a beekeeper I talked to recently, although it was in Needles, California, pretty much all bees are Africanized now. The beekeepers don't care because the African bees produce more honey. It is possible for a beekeeper to replace hives with a queen that has more gentle tra...

@rcorfman If "seeing" means "covering more territory," then he did. I think "seeing" means close examination over time, time to ruminate and think about what you're seeing. An observant person can see more wandering around in one acre of woods than most will notice on ...

@Pivo
Yes, I know there are people like that. Just like at Grand Canyon. Then that attracts others to do something similar. And then you have what you have today. A whole bunch of people going out into nature who don't give a damn about nature. It's all about the "Challenge."
