Re: Grand Cell Service...yaaaay *sarcasm*

somehow strangely tall, pine trees? As I'm sure you know, there are several of those on the outskirts of Flag, on 89, and one on 64 at Red Lake. The ones on 89 provided comic relief for my tour guests when returning from the Canyon and Cameron to Flagstaff, I'd point one of them out, telling them i...

Re: 2017 Hazolutions

Good thing I didn't make any. I would never have guessed in a million years how it would have gone: Get back with my ex, move to Oregon, live in three different parts of it, grow a market garden of cucumbers, tomatoes and squash, paddle, bike and hike a little bit, leave Oregon and ex, come back to ...

Re: Sleeping bag repair

Why not just use a sleeping bag for those times when it is too cold for a quilt? I use my sleeping bag like a quilt 90% of the time, but sure am glad for that zipper when I need it. I know, I should buy a quilt, too, but they are expensive. Anything with ANY kind of glue is likely to fail, in my opi...

Re: Packrafting trips in January

@Howard70 Whoa, wasted a Grand Canyon river permit taking out at Soap? Why not do the whole thing and do a lot of side hikes? @Bendboater All these adventures sound fun, especially the SF River along about March or so. I'm getting too old for bumping around in a lot of whitewater, though. I'll stic...

Re: Glen Canyon National Recreation Area

@hoopshiker
I believe you can get a permit for $12 in Cameron or Page, and hike in from 89A. At least, it was $12 last time I checked. Hope you can get a kayak sometime.

Re: Mindless weather chit chat

It's so windy, had to cancel a 4-day paddle trip. Going out to the Mojave National Preserve instead, but I hear it's windy everywhere in this region. Yesterday before sunset it was 60 degrees in Bullhead, which felt just about like the Arctic after two months of balmy bliss.

Re: Glen Canyon National Recreation Area

Do you have a kayak? You can easily paddle across the river and do this hike, or get the permit and hike in via 89A. https://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=20149

Re: Mindless weather chit chat

I woke up this morning and looked at the local forecast here in Needless, expecting it to be similar to what I had seen last night, but it is totally different. I have planned a club event tomorrow, a river kayak trip, and I was expecting to cancel it. Now I think I can hold off on that decision, si...

Re: Honeyville freeze-dried foods

Thanks for the post. I'll save the link to a folder I have on the topic. Due to cost I have switched to pasta sides, etc., adding tuna packets. My backpacking/kayaking cooking skills need work, anyway. I've always been the "pour the water into the bag, wait 15 minutes" type of cook.

Re: If you were just going to the GC with family

@louie I am assuming when you say "go backcountry" that you are going backpacking, to carry large packs and camp down inside of the Canyon? For that you need a backpacking permit. If you already have your backpacking permit for the Hermit Trail, then the BCO (Backcountry Office) will give you the g...

Re: Digital Cameras

@outdoor_lover
Thanks!! I've been eyeing your New Year's hike, but haven't put "interested" yet. I'll have to see if I want to spend money on gas at that time. I'm working with a shoestring budget this winter due to my Oregon adventure/misadventure.

Re: Digital Cameras

@outdoor_lover Congrats on your new camera! I'm still dragging my Nikon around, similar to your old one, but still can't figure out how to stop it from having such high contrast photos. I try landscape setting, but it doesn't help much. It's always very washed-out. Anyway, I am going to look for a ...

Oh, I guess I was just thinking about a cheap flip-phone that you'd just toss when you were done.
