Re: Hiking cartoons -maybe we'll use this thread as a repository

@chumley Have you ever taken those classes where you are supposed to remember those acronyms? I do remember them...long enough to take the quiz at the end of the course. I just looked up STOP, in fact. Boys' Life Magazine (apparently still in existence, who knew?) has it as (now I have forgotten it...

@markthurman53
I saw this being discussed ad nauseum elsewhere. It seems they mark the trees they are not going to cut, according to people who claimed they work in the tree-thinning business.

Zion hiker lost and found: Something doesn't add up

When the story broke that a missing female hiker had been found after nearly two weeks "lost" in Zion, there was also a GoFundMe set up by her family that was racking up the bucks. I thought I smelled a rat right away. I said something about my suspicions in another venue. I said I thought it was a ...

Ah, got it. Well, it seems she's just doing this for fun, anyway.

She said in the article that she hikes down the trails in regular shoes.

I'm told you might have to wait quite a while for a trip to come by right now.

I'm working on getting a seasonal job there. I do like to switch jobs every 2 or 3 years.

It is, but to be clear, it's not super close. From Yuma it's about 70 miles to Palo Verde, CA, and Cibola NWR.

Re: Moving to Casa Grande / Phoenix / Kayenta / Anywhere

I'm leaving Flagstaff tomorrow, heading for the Lower Colorado River, but not to Needles this year. My early "cool season" digs will be on the riverbank, a few miles south of Blythe, until sometime in Dec. It's only a couple of hours from Phoenix. If anyone wants to drive over and go kayaking with m...

I haven't seen her for several years, although I think maybe she's been to some Meetup events I missed. I won't be in that area much this winter, so it's unlikely I'll be running into her.

Re: Hanging Up The Spurs

I enjoy reading about the few extremely elderly people doing some great things, such as Dale Sanders' thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail at age 82, and his Mississippi River Source to Sea canoe trip at age 80. He's now 84, and is doing a Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim backpacking trip in October, and hopes to be...

No. Not unless they've enlarged it since the last time I went. You would take up most of the parking. And it's not flat.

Re: Cottonwood Fire

The guy is a dentist in Flag, (retired I think.) He has probably been backpacking GC for years, and he probably has always burned his TP, because all the old GC backpackers used to do that. After several wildfires, this practice was made against the rules/illegal. I even knew a guy who admitted to s...

Re: West Coast Fire Situation & 80s Movie Trivia

I'm very, very sad to see the devastation in the small towns of Phoenix and Talent, Oregon, where I briefly lived in 2017. (It is the ONLY time in my life I ever have lived in a place called Phoenix!) These towns are between Medford and Ashland, in southern Oregon. I watched a YouTube video taken by...

Re: Blue Range Primitive Area - Linking Dutch Blue Creek with Bear Mtn

@hikeaz The Springerville district is very neglectful. They built a 27 Mile Trail and then never touched it again. They sometimes send a fire crew to cut trees in South Fork. They take care of a few popular trails such as Mount Baldy. The Alpine District does a better job. And over by Show Low Pine...
