Re: Mess Kit

@Uide Most backpackers are using one big titanium mug you can cook in, and one spork. That's it. People don't generally carry mess kits these days. For a stove, you'll find that an isopropane canister fits inside of the mug, which goes with the MSR pocket rocket stove. But even lighter weight than ...

Re: Mindless weather chit chat

Up here in Flagstaff we've had more than an inch of rain this month. It's been raining every day since May 7th. We've had the thunderstorms, but also a few spates of steady rain. Chilly, too. Still down into the 30's every night. Good thing they do the graduation inside the Dome! The snow is once ag...

Re: Gila NF near Alma, NM / Mogollon mtns

@derpsquad I have a Falcon guidebook that has some amazing-looking loops in it, (written before all those fires.) There's also a backpacker map, I don't have it handy, that shows loops. Can't remember the publisher's name, but I bought it at REI. I just never got around to doing more than that one ...

Re: Gila NF near Alma, NM / Mogollon mtns

Due to there having been many big fires, and the fact that you're talking about going out there early in the season, I would call the ranger district to find out trail conditions. Having to negotiate hundreds of fallen trees can really take the fun out of a hike. I've hiked only the 25-mile Whitewat...

[ Garnet Peak Trail ] near Mount Laguna. PCT also, through the Laguna Mountain area. Much cooler up there than desert.

Well I may be mistaken. One of the people on that trip, Peg, was on a 6-day Lake Powell paddle I went on this past September. I seem to recall looking up the date.

Re: Looking for alternative overnight trip in Tucson area

@jsullivan https://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=449 With a side trip to Seven Falls, and another long side trip to Hutch's Pool. Or, you could just go to Hutch's Pool. You don't have to hike up the Sabino Canyon paved road to get there, you can hike the Phone Line Trail. https://hikearizona.com/...

Re: First timer visiting AZ for a long week

Tucson always close to my heart, since I lived there for years. If I were doing a couple nights backpack I'd first consider the Bear Canyon (Seven Falls) Sabino Canyon loop, with a side hike to Hutch's Pool. That's where the really good scenery is. Saguaro NP is okay, but I like the Catalinas way be...

Re: Snake Gaiters -worth it?

I do know a hiker who was bitten on the Finger Rock Trail by Tucson. She had to be airlifted out because she was rendered immovable pretty quickly. After that, she still hiked the Finger Rock Trail, but never wore snake gaiters. She just watched more carefully. My ex's coworker was bitten while hiki...
