Re: Tinder Fire

A recent observation--if the fire had been 5 miles west the resulting runoff and erosion would likely have damaged Cragin Reservoir to the point that Payson's gazillion dollar waterline project would have been for nothing.

Hopi Music of the Grand Canyon

A friend asked me to help spread the word: Delete if inappropriate. Last October, I was fortunate enough to spend an evening inside the Desert View Watchtower on the South Rim of Grand Canyon recording music with Clark Tenakhongva, a renowned Hopi singer, and Gary Stroutsos, one of the world's great...

Re: Horse Camp Seep

If the riders are coming from the south, versus up Barnhardt, know that there is an eroded length of trail south of the Barnhardt junction that is not safe for horses.

@The_Eagle If I had minimum wage for every hour spent studying maps I could retire. Wait, I did retire. Well, you get the drift.

Re: AzTrail Passages 16-17

@Preacher The box that used to be at the 16/17 border was moved to FR 4 because restocking the box that far out became impractical/impossible. Sorry, load up at the river and hump it north.

Re: AzTrail Passages 16-17

We hiked 17 and 16 Feb 17 -20. That's a bit long ago for any water report, but we did see water below a rock wall at 33.226916, 111.152897, just off the trail in a wash. Also some water in the wash trail-south of FR4 but I'm sure it was very temporary, from a recent light rain. There was water in th...

Lost Item Passage 2

If anyone finds or has found a "tan, down Patagonia jacket" on passage 2 please let me or the ATA office know, the person who lost it is looking for it. Thanks.

Re: Permits

In 2010 I dealt with this by reserving 3 nights at Manning Camp, expecting I'd hit one of them. When I explained that to someone at the park afterward, they kind of blanched because that practice locks up the sites for other users. I believe they came up with the phone permit practice to prevent thi...

Re: Permits

The gal who answers the phone at the NPS Saguaro NP visitor center (520) 733-5153 was very helpful: For AZT hikers, they will issue a permit over the phone. Call when you are absolutely certain of the day you need it, maybe a day or two out. If you aren’t carrying a phone maybe you could call from C...

Re: Garmin Maps the Arizona Trail

In 2010 I downloaded all the tracks then available from the ATA website, split the bigger ones into 500 point segments, and loaded them on to my Garmin GPS. I also imported the tracks into National Geographic TOPO software and printed paper maps. This took over 8 hours of constant attention. Garmin ...
