Re: 4 day backpack on east side of Mazatzals

We camped near the junction to Hopi, off the west side of the Divide Trail a few hundred feet in the deadfall. Not stellar by any means but it was flat, and we saw evidence of others from many years ago-old fire ring and a pick mattock.

Re: The Hike Book

Has anyone seen it yet? I'd like to know how many trips in the book are not listed and documented on HAZ.

Re: Leo Canyon near Hellsgate (Tonto & Haigler Cks.)

Have you looked through Slim Ellison's books? I have some of them but not here in Phoenix. He cowboyed all over that country at that time. I want to recall reading at least a mention of the incident in one of them but I may be remembering something that didn't happen.

Re: Doll Baby TH to LF Ranch, River Route

I just posted (maybe it posted, my first "route") a GPS track of this route collected today. The trail is pretty evident for most of it, but there are some glitches. The turn near the west end is not real clear, and the trail is quickly obscured a few feet from the turn by a brushy deadfall.

Re: FR 172 & 172A to Rogers Trough TH

We were up and back yesterday, conditions are pretty much as Shattered Arm says. Passable, but some of the drainage crossings won't last much longer if there isn't some work done on them soon.

Garmin 76CSx. Antique but it's what I started with, so I've picked up two in like-new condition since.

Re: Good start time for the AZT

One must balance the weather, hiking speed and time. If you start too early or travel too fast, you’ll get into snow and cold temps on the north end. Too late or too slow and you’ll hit serious heat in the lower areas, like the Gila River or drying conditions further north. Watch the weather, plan y...

Re: State Route 88 - Apache Trail closed

@chumley
I had similar thoughts after seeing the drone footage that ADOT put up. Clearing flood-deposited debris off the road is one thing, making Fish Hill safe, where the road traverses essentially a talus slope, is a much bigger challenge.

@Drdynamo
Maybe not completely, but the whole thing is supposed to be fun, and if you're flirting with heat exhaustion it isn't fun. Check the historical temperatures on this website for the lower passages (14-18).

Re: May start date NOB

By flip flopping, I was suggesting starting on say, passage 14 at Tiger Mine TH, hiking to maybe Picket Post or Rogers Trough as early in the adventure as possible, then going to the south end and hiking to Tiger Mine TH, jumping north to wherever he left off and continuing on the way. Regardless, h...

One strategy would be to flip flop to do the warmer/ lower passages first.

That will leave a scar! Over 4 inches would rearrange things regardless of the fire.
