Re: Government Shutdown

I heard today that youth crews contracted to do trail work on public lands are not allowed to do so during this fiasco. That means the work doesn't get done, the set up and advance work to get them there was wasted, funding will likely run out and be lost, and the kids will go off and find paying jo...

Has anyone heard anything about this? I think of it everytime I drive by, which is quite often.

"And the camping options all seemed to be covered in grass filled with cockleburs (or some other spiny little thing)."

That pretty well describes most of Arizona.

Re: New Singletrack To Be Built Across Babbitt Ranch

Our Section Hiking crew enjoyed the wide open spaces on Babbitt Ranch, one track or two. The views of Humphrey's to the south are not seen anywhere else, and the day we hiked it the clouds were quite impressive.

There are no bad parts of the AZT!

Re: Hammock use

Many do use hammocks, but finding a sufficiently sturdy prickly pear cactus will be a challenge in some locations. But seriously, I'll defer to more experienced "hangers." We just did Passage 15 and I can't imagine finding a place in either of our campsites. (Yeah, two nights, we're kinda slow.) I'd...

FS just put out an alert for rabies in the Superstitions, citing fox bites at First Water two days ago.

@edog1955
The whole immigrant thing is way overblown. Very few people report seening any. The trail is pretty well defined, but it's 800 miles in diverse terrain, you will likely get off trail occasionally.

I flew into Page once years ago. It wasn't in a Cessna but not much bigger.

Re: AZT in a Day!

For anyone hiking mid-AZ, or coming through Pine after their hike, there is an informal after-party at THAT Brewery. Free dessert if you convince the wait-staff that you participated. The T-shirt would likely be pretty convincing.

@Hansenaz
You make a good point. The behavior described is way out of the normal range and does sound like some sort of mental disorder.

Cathedral Rock junction is about half-way, very nice camping and a good chance of water a little upstream from the junction.

Re: Blood Donation?

Our family doctor, years ago (late 50"s/early 60's) told me that giving a pint doesn't do much, but that when he was in med school they would give two pints, and assured me that had quite an effect.

Looking for burned-over juniper

We need 8-10 good sized, dry, juniper posts for trail signs on the AZT Happy Jack Single Track project. Cut and trimmed posts should be 7+ feet long and 5-6 inches in diameter on the small end, so we are looking for some fairly mature ones. There has to be a patch that burned in 2014-2016 that is fa...

Re: Tinder Fire

A recent observation--if the fire had been 5 miles west the resulting runoff and erosion would likely have damaged Cragin Reservoir to the point that Payson's gazillion dollar waterline project would have been for nothing.
