Re: Off Trail Dope Search

In September 2005, bear hunters approached a pot farm along Deer Creek, in the Mazatzal Wilderness, and were fired upon by cartel guards. The hunters returned fire and retreated to notify police. The following year, a Forest Service tactical team raided a site in the same area and took fire from a ...

Re: Off Trail Dope Search

Back in 06 a friend and I were driving up to hike Mt. Peeley. When we got near the upper trailhead area for Gold Ridge/South Fork, we were turned around by a couple dozen guys in mixed uniforms and camo, They were armed with assault rifles and there were a couple dogs too. They wouldn't tell us what...

Re: Lost Gear?

While hiking up a drainage out of lower WCC, I lost a teva sandal that was strapped to my pack. This was back in 2000. Last October I took the same route and found it, just sitting there on top of a rock. I still have no Idea how it could possibly have stayed put in that steep drainage through all t...

Re: Tonto Narrows Access

although, is a dry bag 100% necessary? I don't have one of those yet... You can get to the narrows and only get your feet wet. At least, with the old access you could. I guess now it depends on the route you manage to find. If you go very far upstream from the narrows, though, you will probably wan...

Re: Tonto Narrows Access

I can understand why this area was closed, and it's probably better off. It was just too easy to get to for such a nice place. Too many people and not enough respect. Hopefully somebody will find a better way to access the area. Preferably a route difficult enough to deter carrying a cooler full of ...

Re: Dry bags

For now I am going with the trash compactor bags (several smaller ones) and ziplocs. We'll see how that holds up. I wouldn't trust ziplocs for anything more than backup inside of the compactor bags. Anything you keep in just a ziploc bag will get wet. Even a ziploc inside of another ziploc will not...

I don't remember if you need to have the a-v specific to the species of snake that did the biting or not. If it's the same treatment as for humans, all rattlesnake bites are treated with the same antivenin. Another thing to consider out here is the heat, and it's even hotter close to the ground whe...

I've seen four so far in the wild. The first two I saw together from the safety of a truck out on Bloody Basin road. We came around a corner and there they were in the middle of the road. One was larger than the other. I don't know if they were maybe a mother with an older cub, or male and female. T...

In response to Filterman's reply:

Good point. I hadn't even thought of that. No power plants, no need for the water in the flumes or the lake. Were the plants dismantled, or are they still there? I would think they would be considered historic places.

Re: Stehr Lake

In response to azpride's reply: Stehr Lake is connected to Fossil Creek, in a way. The creek actually flows through the canyon east of and about 500 feet below the lake. The flume that carries the water from upstream near the Fossil Springs, empties into and creates Stehr Lake. I think it's there t...

Last spring I was hiking in the Cerbert mountians west of Kingman. While exploring a canyon we found a nice spring flowing quite a bit of water. We noticed the bottom of the pool, there was a bunch of blue crawdads. I had never seen a blue crawdad before!!! All it took to catch the blue boys was to...

great to see people use the word Cougar... Don't forget puma, catamount, deer tiger, brown tiger, silver lion, Mexican lion, mountain screamer, mountain demon, Indian devil, purple feather, sneak cat, king cat, and panther. I usually just call them cats or lions, and in one case m***** f***er! seem...

In response to Dschur's reply: Thanks for the heads up. It is good to be reminded that they are out there. Sometimes some people do forget that we are trespassing out there. But .... Poor Kitty. Mountain lions aren't even welcome in the mountains anymore. Personally, I like my wilderness with wild ...

Nice pics. I was up there last month too. We took two days, and camped at trail camp. I wish we would have had even more time though. Once we got to Trail Crest and saw the other side... All of those mountains, valleys, woods, and lakes... I couldn't stop wondering what was out there. One of these d...
