Does anyone remember circa 2008 when the cairn was still covered in underwear? [ photo ]

Those were the good old days

WOW!!!! You sold me on the loop with that picture- that looks amazing!

@SuperstitionGuy
Blacktop Mesa also sounds good. I wonder if I can convince my friends to expand this to a 2 night journey...

Re: February Backpacking

@joebartels That does look intriguing, but I agree it might be a bit too much for beginners. I might just have to add it onto my own personal to do list for while I am in town. I think at the moment I am leaning towards doing the Boulder Canyon Loop since I've never done any backpacking in the Supe...

February Backpacking

Hey everyone! I'm gonna be back in Tucson visiting friends and family for a good chunk of February and looking to take a couple of friends backpacking. They are both novice backpackers so I'm not looking for anything too strenuous and it needs to be dog friendly. Ideally 10-15 miles round trip would...

Re: Lake Tahoe Hiking

The Desolation Wilderness is definitely worth checking out. I don't know if day hikes require a permit or not- but overnight trips do. Lake Aloha from Echo Lake TH is a nice hike, despite being a bit crowded. You could also try entering the wilderness the back way from Emerald Bay to visit Fontanill...

Re: mt lemmon via finger rock trail

Trail #26 (Cathedral Rock) is not too hard to follow and has improved over the last couple years. Their are cairns in any overgrown areas. However, (I know it has already been asked), but are you planning on doing this as a backpack? The amount of elevation gain & loss using Finger Rock to try t...

Re: Chevelon Lake Canoe Camping

I dont think any of the roads will be open by the end of this month. I also just looked up Chevelon Canyon Lake on the arizona fishing report and it says "The lake is ice-covered. Unsafe ice." Would you be carrying the canoe down to the water from the main parking area on the north side of...

Re: Mt. Lemmon via Catalina State Park

In case you didn't know: the gate at ski valley is closed for the season, so your ride cannot pick you up at the very top. Your going to have to add a little extra mileage to your hike and head down the dirt road to the ski area.

Re: Water up in the Pusch Ridge Wilderness?

Not sure about finger rock or Pima Canyon, but wilderness of rocks and west fork usually seem to have water year round, and I doubt Hutch's Pool EVER goes dry. But I agree with Nighthiker- your pack is the best place to find water in the desert.

Re: Coyote victim

"Most humans are incapable of accurately assessing risk." Very true. These same people who want all the 'dangerous' mountain lions in Sabino Canyon killed are the same ones who fail to bring adequate water with them or get lost and end up needing rescuing. But lets kill the wildlife becaus...

Re: Search and rescue crews helping stranded hiker

Ok, but what happened to the guy on the original post on this thread? I am dying to know why did he need help (he also could have gotten cliffed out on Cat Mtn. I guess) and what was the outcome? I recently became field qualified with SARA and attended this very call. The hiker had made his way to ...

4runner!!!! And if you are into 4wd try to look for a 99 or 00 Limited edition model with the rear e-locker. I was dead set on getting one a couple months ago, only to have my heart broken when I learned someone who is 6'1" doesn't fit... Unfortunately, those will probably have more miles on t...
