Re: backpack as checked luggage
My gear has always fit into a large army rucksack. Durable and very cheap at any local army surplus store.

Re: Gila Wilderness
I'm trying to plan a trip around the same time. My buddy bailed and early-mid May is my ideal time to go. How many days are you planning on being out? I had my eye on the Redstone-Baldy Loop. According to the book (p39), 27 miles. I'm thinking of driving out Thursday AM and coming home Sunday. That ...

Re: Waterfalls?
Interesting about the road to First Water. I was planning on heading back to Battleship on Monday. I've been eyeballing Monday as the 1st or 2nd clear day after this storm passes through and everything is lining up nicely
Boulder canyon should be interesting.

April or May Backpacking out West?
It doesn't look like I'll be able to hit my annual Yosemite backpacking trip until the fall this year. I don't think I can make it that long without a decent long over-a-weekend excursion. I love trees, mountains, and of course water. Fishing would be cool, not a requirement. I've done an overnight ...

If you're camping back country, bring something to keep your gear and food away from rodents. Ratsack, rope, bear canister, etc.

Re: Mother Lode Dos Veces
Now that I've thought about it, I'm out. I'm not worried about the strain...more about the time on the trail. I'll keep an eye out for another Lode trip this fall. You'll probably catch me on the way up to Browns.

If this is on the 14th, I'm in. I was thinking about doing Browns, but if a crew is going the Lode, how can I pass that up?

Re: Difficulty in getting permits for Tonto Trail Camp Sites?
Since this is my first foray down into the canyon, I'll leave this potential "dayhike" :) for another day..plus it would be a shame to miss out on heading all the way down to the Colorado. A gal I work with pointed me in the direction of Scott Beck who puts together a Rim to Rim trip each ...

Re: Difficulty in getting permits for Tonto Trail Camp Sites?
When I spoke to the lady on the phone, she mentioned that people (including canyon workers) have been getting sick from drinking out of Horn and Cedar Spring of late due to the heavy metal content. I mentioned the Salt being radioactive, but she said "not too much" and it should be OK to d...

Re: Difficulty in getting permits for Tonto Trail Camp Sites?
If you start your hike in the morning you can have time to set your camp up at Monument, and if you aren't too tired, take a dayhike down to the Colorado River at Granite Rapids, at the bottom of Monument Canyon. It's less than 2 miles to the river. That's the plan. Since Salt is only 3.4mi from Mo...

Re: Difficulty in getting permits for Tonto Trail Camp Sites?
Sorry. I guess I was assuming my entry point of Hermits Rest and over to Bright Angel along the Tonto. I spoke with a nice lady up there and we found some dates in late Oct staying at Monument the first night and Salt Creek the second night. She seems to think we have a good chance to snatch those u...

Difficulty in getting permits for Tonto Trail Camp Sites?
I've been through the trials in trying to get wilderness permits for Yosemite and even went so far to have a conference call with a bunch of friends to get two adjacent sites on the valley floor at the precise moment the reservations came available. Yosemite also publishes a daily list of what trail...

Re: Hiking in Zion
I did the West Rim last year. It was definitely a strenuous hike, but massively enjoyable. I don't think I would like it too much if I knew I had to hike back down once I got to the top. Perhaps with just a daypack, I would be saying otherwise, but I liked hiking knowing my destination was the top. ...

Re: Camelback trails connect?
I've lived here for almost 7 years and have been hiking Camelback since then and I've never ventured up Echo until Saturday. I've always considered hiking from Cholla like drinking a Coke; I always know what to expect and it is always satisfying. I like the steep parts and there are parts where you ...

That's an interesting point. What is your impression of the folks who do Cholla vs Echo? Without too much stereotyping of course.dinochelle wrote: Either which way....it's one heck of a mountain to hike...but I love it.oh, and the diversity of people on either side is pretty interesting too.
